In defence of Mourinho

It looks like Jose Mourinho will be sanctioned by the all-mighty UEFA for commenting on its representative in Wednesday's match at the Bernabeu, Wolfgang Stark, and a perceived pro-Barcelona conspiracy. Even worse, probably, is the fact that Mourinho had the audacity to be critical of the Catalan club. In this day and age, it no longer seems an acceptable course of action.

Let's have a look then at what exactly Mourinho is deemed guilty of.

First of all, he claims the referee's decision to send Pepe off changed the game in Barcelona's favour. Now take any game which, with all 22 players on the pitch, has 0-0 on the scoreboard with none of the teams likely to score any time soon, not even the team which is obviously playing the best football on the night. If the referee then decides to send a player off from either team, does that change the game in the other team's favour? Of course it does. More so when said player has so far nullified any threat from the opposition's - and the world's - best player, thus justifying his manager's tactics. Spot on there, then.

His claims that the red card was unjust are also far from incorrect. Both Pepe and Dani Alves go for a loose ball. They both go in hard, with their foot raised. Evidence now suggests there was no contact but, on first viewing, it would be difficult to criticise the decision to award a foul against Pepe. However, the referee certainly didn't look like he was going for a red card before Alves turned on the method acting (with one flaw: would you roll about if your leg was really hurt?), the stretcher came out and he was surrounded by the rest of Barcelona's squad. Watching from the sideline, Alves had to be stopped from jumping straight off said stretcher once he got what he wanted. Also, shortly before, Javier Mascherano was late with a challenge and kicked Pepe full in the shin with the ball nowhere near. Surely that should also have been a red?

Mourinho also says that Barcelona's win in 2009 was tainted because of that game at Stamford Bridge. Now I think the vast majority would agree that Chelsea were robbed in that game by a referee who made a number of incredible mistakes. The home team were better than Barcelona on the night but had four penalty claims turned down, two of them clearly valid or, as is now the appropriate expression, stonewall. Anyone with a decent pair of eyes, unclouded by the current atmosphere of Barcelona deification, can see that the 2009 final should have been Chelsea v Manchester United. Again, it is hard to see what is wrong with that statement.

It isn't even a dig at Pep Guardiola, as many seem to have interpreted it. Mourinho begins by stressing that he thinks of the Barcelona boss as "a fantastic coach." He merely points out that he would be ashamed to have won the Champions League in such a fashion. That is, of course, rubbish. Manchester United will surely have a thing or two to say about a game against Porto, then managed by Mourinho, in 2004. But it is not in any way an insult towards Guardiola. I am certain that Mourinho has a lot of respect for his nemesis, just as he had for Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. He has a knack of winding people up, but again I cannot see the problem here. For Barcelona to ask for charges against Mourinho smacks of a lack of grace in victory.

Where Mourinho does of course go wrong is when he draws Unicef and UEFA into the whole debate and goes off on a conspiracy tangent. It is merely a rant by a manager who feels he has just been robbed of a result, a result he could well have got. By negative tactics, granted, but football is about results.

Let us not forget that, a mere week before, Real won the Copa del Rey, beating Barcelona using exactly the same tactics they were now unable to fully deploy. It would take a very big person not to be frustrated and angry straight after that game. Mourinho was unable to be magnanimous in this case, but maybe UEFA should try for once to look at this with some perspective. But, again, UEFA does not respond well to criticism.

All this seems to be papered over by a large proportion of press and public, who merely point out the fact that "the best team won". But first of all, apart from having their usual massive percentage of possession, Barcelona weren't very good at all before Pepe was sent off. And secondly, if the best team should always win, shouldn't we just abolish all competitions and give all the cups to Barcelona from now on? They may be the best squad in the world, but surely that shouldn't imply another squad should be forbidden to try to stop them.

What pepe did in the past should have had no effect on this game or the reffs decision (even though again, im guessing thats exactly what happened). Just like bommel gets many cards because hes van bommel or ibrahimvic gets calls against him due to his reputation giving the red to pepe to re-compensate some of his past madness shouldn't be fair or an option.

And again i dont care about pepe, most def dont fell sorry for him or reals loss + i wasn't referring to just alves's assumed diving. I was referring to all the shenanigans barca pulled on the pitch, all the simulations now if i understood correctly UEFA will investigate over. Im disgusted when the clown does it, when pippo does or when ambro does it. Its nothing personal against barca as a club, just the way some (not all) of their players act.

Almost every referee looks at a player's past before entering a game. Every ref looks at ronaldo's dives or gilardino's dive and u can be rest assured its playing in his mind every time these 2 players go down. That is why many refs have stopped awarding these 2 players penalties. Players like Scholes for reputation for hard tacklers are sent off for almost anything these days. Sir Alex even said that refs were targeting rooney for his past record.

Did the ref have pepe's past record in mind? Yup. U can say he should have kept dani alves's past record in mind as well but the challenge was studs up, lunging and high + referee added intent to the equation which means what dani alves did afterwards (he did dive) is inconsequential.

Now u can ask what about the other players that dived throughout the game? Well to be fair ref was pretty consistent with everyone's diving. He ignored it and let play go on. He did not book either sets of players or else Di Maria wouldnt be playing in the return leg either.

And almost ALL barcelona and ALL madrid players are divers imo especially barcelona. I dunno about adriano and pique but the rest all are divers.

So this is a fact now? This forum solves everything:eek:

:lol::lol::lol:
To answer ur question no. Second if thats some kind of attempt of a comparison between the 2 situations than its a fairly inaccurate and hilarious one:D

You missed the point.
Pepe tainted himself as a barbaric fuck.
He does have a history of trying to hurt other players.
Look @ the video & just tell me what was he trying to do.
That tackle could have easily break a leg.
Trying to get someone hurt deserve a red card even if the injury didnt occur.
A barbaric tackle + Pepe's history as an asshole & a red card is the answer.
Just imagine him doing this to a player we like like for say ............ Pato ?
But wait , you need to be objective to think like that !!!!

truth

:thumbsup::lol::lol::lol:

There aren't divers in every team. NOT at :star:Milan:star: . go on youtube and try to look for a milan player dive. The only video you will find is one gilardino
and that one dida incident... now, check man u, check chelsea, check real, check barca, check liverpool.
I guarantee you that you will find 20 times as many COMPILATIONsss
ROFL , I wrote Pippo & the result is a pathetic diver.

On a side note , I really admire ppl who talk shit about Barca's side passing & yet admire Pirlo or others who talk shit about divers with Pippo on their favorite player's list.
ROFL ...

Barca went into the game with RM with a starting XI that didn't have any yellows so Dani Alves and Mascherano picked up one so only these two are in danger, thats it really.

Messi has a micro tear in some muscle and will miss the weekends match and might not be risked against RMadrid because if it gets worse then he may have to miss the final. Will probably make the bench for the second leg but remains to be seem if he will be risked.

However, Adriano and Iniesta should be back so they will be pretty much at full strength for the final.

Was hoping for maybe Puyol or Xavi, but losing Alvez would be ok. Would nullify their threat down the right. Hopefully Ronaldo and Di Maria try to get him booked ;)

For the record United have no players near a suspension.

Well, hes missed one already so i really think he will be on his best behaviour on tuesday night. Of course Mou and the RM wingers will try and take advantage of this and provoke him.

It wont really make a huge difference in the final though, they can cover it with Puyol RB, Mascherano CB and Adriano LB. Instead of Alves, Adriano will do all the attacking from a fullback position.

I cant see United or SAF trying to man-mark Messi and United dont really have anyone capable of doing this job for them unless you play Smalling at DM. It will be a boring Mourinho esque move and will probably flop...The final will be a tense game but i fancy Barca to come out on top.

I assume that's aimed at me?

They just dive too much man. and without even contact... it's borderline annoying. Busquetes provides us with genius theater work every CL semi final, and Pedro, Villa, Mascherano, etc... are not far off. It's just pathetic, without single contact they fall off holding their face/stomach/etc... screaming like someone shot them, then the rest of the midgets gang up on the ref... a moment later and the diver gets up and continues the game normally. This happens like 3-4 times EVERY game and nobody does anything about it and even refs fall for it.

Hollywood must surely start to take notice...

Barca has the title in the bag unless someone in their team fucks up like Terry did vs. MU in 2008 final.

Or a team get's a crazy amount of luck when scoring the goal, like Chelsea did in the 08 final.

Barca will actually have a challenge ahead of them to break down uniteds defence.

It will be their biggest challenge this season and IMO will see if Messi is as good as the hype says he is

:lol: were you burying your head in sand the last couple of years? Messi has proved that he's "as good as the hype says" in the only Champions League final that he played which also happens to be against Manchester United (who were better than now, at least on paper)

I believe that Messi scored a header with all the giant Manchester United defenders around. Hilarious.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a Barcelona fan. I want Schalke04 to win it. And yes, I know it is not possible.

Mourinho totally disappointed me with his slacker tactics in CL this week, not even Merda played that defensively against them, a proposition of the game 100% subjected for the fear of the rival, rejecting any chance of victory. The '90 minuti in il Bernabeu son molto longo', the ambition, bravery, thrill that historichally distinguished RM and its mysticism in this competition got desactivated by his own couch, now RM don't play with the 12th player anymore, now they pley with 10.

Even when Mourinho was sent off he didn' t want to react, he had an excuse for monopolizing his speech and avoiding to make any comment of the poor game, why didn' t he introduce Garay to Secure the 0-0?

He still continued playing with 3 forward players, and only did 1 change.
