Mr De Vecchi, last time you gave us an interview while coaching the Berretti, a team you led all the way in the championship last season. Today we find you on the bench of the Regional Giovanissimi 98. What kind of satisfaction do you find in coaching children of this age?
Working with children can give you enormous satisfaction of different kinds. On one hand, it’s great to see their development in training and in matches, when they put into practice what they’ve learn during the week. On the other hand, it’s a pleasure for a coach to see his players come to the field early, determined to work hard. These are the most gratifying things.
What kind of work does a coach do with children of this age?
Basically we don’t work on the athletic aspect, but, supported by Milan Lab’s athletic coaches, the 70-80% of exercises are aimed at improving the players’ technique and coordination.
What role does football have in the life of a 13-year-old?
They are relaxed and this is our task to ensure this. We do everything to make them live this experience as it were just fun, and for what I see, I can say that we manage to achieve this goal. The children are relaxed, they train with a smile on their faces, but it is important that they understand that you are in an environment where without making sacrifices you’re not getting anywhere: they must get into the game with enthusiasm and will, always aware of playing for Milan, the most important club that there is.
What are the values you try to convey to your players?
The same things we teach the older: the love for the work to do, the commitment and seriousness, not only to show off but also to be aware at the end of the day the you did your job as well as you could.
What kind of difference do you see between today’s children and those of the past? Do you believe that the standard has remained the same?
Now I’m working with 13-year-olds and I think it's too early to make comparisons and judgements. There are some very talented youngsters but they need plenty of time to grow and develop. In general, football has remained the same, even though now perhaps children are more prone to distractions, but basically, the effort put into training and shown on the field is always the same.
Tell us about your team and the season you’re having!
The team did very well in the first part of the championship by winning every game. Now the second phase has begun, where we play against all the big teams such as Inter, Brescia and Atalanta. We’ve had some excellent performances and the boys show great improvements every day. However, ours is a kind of a preparative league, supposed to allow the players to grow and get ready for the category of the National Giovanissimi. In addition, we have won two major competitions such as the Montichiari Tournament and the Lennart Johansson Trophy by beating teams like Ajax and PAOK.
Your task is to teach football, but is there something that you learn from these children?
You can learn amazing things from these boys. For example, the way they accepted defeat is remarkable. This is perhaps the best lesson. We adults sometimes blow problems out of proportion, whereas they can smile again after five later. First, maybe they cry, but then see them laugh and joke around together. They show you the solution, the key to all problems and often it really would be useful to learn from them.
Coach Giovanni Stroppa’s team is going to host Empoli at Vismara at 16.30 CET on Saturday, May 7. The winner of the game will meet the winner of the Inter-Torino matchup. In the end, one of the four teams - Milan, Empoli, Inter and Torino - will qualify for the Final Eight of the Youth Teams’ National Championship, which will be held in Montecatini between June 4 and 13.
Actually MilanChannel should try and cover our matches and air them later (delayed) at least & we could find some links to download the same.
I also had posted of Milan vs Albinoleffe few weeks ago and you're welcome!
Milan have been crowned winners of the Lennart Johansson Trophy 2011, an international tournament organised for children aged 12-14 and held in Stockholm between April 29 and May 1. After demolishing Ajax 5-0 in the semi-final, the young Rossoneri saw off PAOK F.C. in the final with a convincing 3-0 victory, thanks to goals from De Piano, Llams and Cultrone. Coach De Vezzi’s boys did extremely well in Sweden as they won all of their five matches, scoring 25 goals and allowing only 1 in the process. After having won the Montichiari Tournament, one of the most important competition organised for this category in Italy, the young Rossoneri have claimed another important trophy - a clear demonstration of the good job done and the steady progress shown during the season.
MILAN WIN LENNART JOHANSSON TROPHY
Coach De Vecchi’s boys have won the prestigious international cup, beating Greek side PAOK in the final.
^As icing on the cake, Michael Modic was given the best player of the tournament award.
The young Rossoneri are hosting Empoli at Vismara today at 16.30 CET, in the quarterfinals of the Youth Teams’ Championship. The winner of the game will meet the winner of the Inter-Torino matchup. In the end, one of the four teams - Milan, Empoli, Inter and Torino - will qualify for the Final Eight of the Youth Teams’ National Championship.
Come and support Giovanni Stroppa’s boys at Vismara, in via dei Missaglia 117, where entrance for this game will be free.

Beretta-Fossati-Verdi trio certainly have good understanding with each other. Should have been leading by at least 2 goals. Calvano has pretty good ball control if he's a box-to-box midfielder, may be playing there coz of Strasser in holding position(?).
We lacked of unexpected and random movement to PK area from fullbacks, and midfielders. It was clear that in many occasions Baretta, Verdi or Fossati couldn't do anything when facing opponent's defenders since no players try to move to PK area or upfront to distract defender's attention, to make space or to receive pass.
It seems that we play 4-2-3-1 with number 5 and Strasser as two players infront of defenders. We dominated the game but we should do better if we have more players go forward or make random moves to PK area.
