The 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

this is a book you must read at least once in your life.
modern days version of Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince.

it feels like Machiavelli, Nietzsche & Sun Tzu were gathered, and speaking in a self-empowerment seminar.

it shows principles to gain power and stay with it. It also shows that the most impressive people handling power had to do things that some of us would not do by principles, so not everyone is made to do what it's necessary to achieve power.

I remember picking this up before the UCL final in 05. (heard about it on The Contender, "no such thing as a free luch")

Loved it to begin with... but I had to put it down half way through.

Definitely worth a read. On the one hand it can be used to manipulate people. On the other hand you can use it to defend yourself against those who try to manipulate..

My favourite option is to sit back and watch the show unfold, between 2 people.

One of the early laws regarding Reputation... and how the chinese General defeated an an army of 100K on his own ... That was brilliant.

and when I read the law #15: "Crush Your Enemy Totally"
I suddenly remember Juventus.
The book writer encourge it's reader to show no mercy on enemies, because if we gave them hope, it will make them more determined, more embittered, and someday will take revenge.
Juventus was really fucked up after the calciopoli.
They were no longer considered as our rival for that period.
However, they slowly build their team again, and somehow Galliani gave them Andrea Pirlo.

and then, here we are, fucked up.

I read this book literally at starbucks, on my iPad.
I sat there, and I read the book in one sitting because I couldn't get up, and I finished the book. One by one by one I was going through it and said..
everybody needs to read this book.

Found it! Recently finished How to set a fire and why by Jesse Ball (great titel right?) Its about a Holden Caulfield kinda girl who's trying to get into the schools Arson Club. Great and very funny coming of age novel.

Now just finished Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges who pants a pretty grim picture of the US, saying it's more and more clinging to illusion and fictions because of it's inability to deal with the grim reality. Great read, im Def gonna read more from Hedges. Starting with War Is A Force That Gives US Meaning.

Stephen King: The stand.

Pains a great picture, of what the apocalypse of our times could easily be. There's a chapter with an old woman remembering her youth, absolutely heart breaking the way he describes it.

I also listened to David Goggins cant hurt me. Dude is crazy.

I didn't know this thread existed and im pissed at myself for never looking beforehand.

Few months ago I finished Alexandre Dumas - Count of Monte Cristo in about 5 days it was so good. By far the greatest fiction book I have read.

I normally read philosophy and other nonfiction like political theory and war/history. Recently Nicolo Machiavelli's the Prince and Ceasars commentarys on the gallic war & the civil war as examples

Right now I'm reading based off a friends recommendation P.D. Ouspensky In Search of the Miraculous which is about first hand account of George Gurdjieff's teachings. Seems to be pretty similar to hermetic philosophy, but not far enough in it yet to determine. its quite good so far.

Also started getting into Albert Camus and existentialism. Currently reading 3 of his books The Rebel, The Myth of Sisyphus, and the Plague.

I’ve just read a book called "Little Women" by Louise May Alcott. The novel is about four sisters, their life, friendship, growing up. In short, for me, it’s a one-time book. Of course, today the book will seem very boring for modern young girls. There is not even a storyline here. Description of their boring measured life, their worries, children's desires. Although it would be useful for them to read because children's selfishness is still relevant today. This book is also suitable for a more adult female audience, there is something to think about child-rearing. The story is not modern at all, and the book is not very exciting, but I do not regret having read it. A recommendation only for lovers of women's classics.

Recently watched the series Foundation and decided to read a series of books. I am very disappointed because there are a lot of interesting things missing in the show. I think Isaac Asimov is an amazing writer.

Intriguing take, thank you. I haven't read much about the selfishness of children. I have to read the book sometime.

The only book I have read on women or by a woman is 'Personal History' by Katherine Graham. She was a homemaker who was forced to run the Washington Post after her husband killed himself. She was at the helm when Watergate broke. It's a brilliant book and gave a new insight on how she slowly came out of her shell and gained confidence to deal with all these famous journalists and executives.

I'm reading Charlotte and Wilbur by E. B. White, I read this book for my daughter every night, cartoon characters in this context are very lively and kind.

Hedge Knight has Art which is good, and text is mostly from the book but George's inspired storytelling does not lend itself to this cheap format. It ain't Spiderman.
