For those people who have been saying Atalanta deserve champions league, these jokers have already started making plans to sell their best players like Illicic, Castagne and even Zapata if rumors are to be believed. This is why I don’t support small teams going on novelty experiments in the champions league.

While they probably waste a spot in the CL for Italy, Milan misses another year in the long climb back to the European elites.

We really need champions league otherwise the cycle continues

Yeah, the only clubs in Italy that can/want to be competitive in Europe are Juventus, Milan and Inter... Lazio, Roma, Atalanta will always be mediocre... while Napoli is somewhere inbetween

Remember when Juve was in our shadow. What a disappointing world we find ourselves in.

True, but point wise we hardly improved compared to last season. Right now we have 1 point more than last season, with 1 game to go. So in best case we'll have improved by 4 points. In worst case by 1 tiny point. Yet we're in CL race, while last year we would have needed 73 points to overtake Inter at 4th place (because of our bad h-2-h results). IMO this doesn't mean the league has become more competitive, but that it has regressed, and that's why we're here talking about maybe making it into CL.

As I see it that's hardly an improvement considered that last season we had to cope with 11 new players and Montellas pathetic coaching in the 1st half of the season. We started the season with Higuain instead of Kalinic and some tiny new additions like Samu or Baka. In winter we even got a huge boost with Paqueta and Piatek. I'm not saying we should have been fighting for scudetto at any costs. But result wise we should have done way better than finishing with only 1, 2 or 4 more points than last season. On top of that we embarrassed ourselfs in EL and quit the competition sooner than last season. Same goes for Coppa Italia where we didn't make it into the final unlike last season.

And even when I look beyond the results: we're not playing better than last year or expressing an improved football style compared to last season. We haven't made any improvements. There is no single player bar Baka that has significantly improved under or thanks to Gattusos coaching ideas. No one.

1. to say if league has got more competitive or regressed, we have to see how much teams like napoli, juve, inter, roma and lazio changed who all have less points than previous year.

i agree we are playing badly compared to when he started last season(and start of this season). we haven't just been inconsistent, we have allowed ourselves to get down streaks of negative results which should be unacceptable for team with CL place ambition.

there has been clear improvements in lots of players since he took over. last season, almost all the squad progressed under him. most notably hakan.
this year after first few matches lots of players regressed. suso, hakan, higuain and rr(second half) most notably. there have been improvement on baka, roma, donna, abate, zapata, mauri both times he played and borini.

As opposed to Milan who are making plans to keep them? There's the same type of reports coming in for both clubs.

And get off your high horse, novelty teams? That's fucking Milan for the past 10 years, and unlike Atalanta we did spend more money and play more shitty football.

What makes a top club is money these days, and it has been that way for the past 3 decades at least. Atalanta have a good strategy to grow as a club, and they have been doing it consistently year after year.

You can't expect them to become Barcelona over night.

dat 2012/2013 :D if Clarence had full season and not half, he'd be >Gattuso, and he had a team full of hobos.

The 2012/2013 points tally is not shown here(72).

I'd say Seedorf benefited from joining in the middle of the season rather than from the start.
The squad was so weak and so injury-ridden that the questionable players who arrived in January(Rami, Honda, Taarabt, Essien) were all much-needed. There were also player returns from injury, like Pazzini who immediately outperformed Matri.

Seedorf's winning streak began after crashing out of CL and the Copa by losing all 3 of the games. He didn't have to deal with the 8 CL play off and group stage games of first season half.

He won 35 points in his 19 Serie A games.
This is good. It would lead to 70 points in a full season, IF he could keep the points avg.
Big IF. Because Milan typically peaks in the 2nd half of the season.
For comparison, Rino acquired 39 points in the second half(19 games) of last season. That's 78 points if he can keep it up for a full season, which he obviously didn't.
We've had a relatively good second half this season as well. 37 points in the last 19 games. That's the same points avg as 74 points in 38 rounds.
But the most we'll get is 68 points...

With that said, Seedorf's incistence on 4-2-3-1 played a great part in the improved results.
It's the one thing I really liked about him as a coach, because it clearly was the best way to fit De Jong and Monto together and make the most out of a squad that had many wingers and CAMs and not a single proper B2B mid.
But this was ironically also why Silvio went from being the guy who hired him, against Galliani's wishes, to being the one who wanted to get rid of him the most. "4-3-1-2 Kaka CAM or GTFO!"

This is my biggest gripe, fair enough if they built on what they have but they never will and they have a stadium to pay for

It's seeming more and more likely that Leonardo will leave to take a job with the Brazil national team. :(

Gazzetta - Milan, Leonardo to the farewell: announcement to the finished championship
05.22.2019 09:23 by Enrico Ferrazzi

Except for sensational second thoughts of the last moment, Leonardo is ready to resign and will do so as soon as the current championship is over: from next Monday onwards, in fact, every day could be the good one to make his farewell official. This was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport on newsstands this morning.

CorSera - Milan, that's why Leonardo is thinking of resigning at the end of the season
05.22.2019 08:48 by Enrico Ferrazzi

Today's edition of the Corriere della Sera explains this morning why Leonardo is thinking of resigning at the end of the season: if in fact last summer the market operations were conducted in complete autonomy by the Brazilian, in January, after the establishment of Gazidis in Casa Milan, the negotiations had to receive the approval of the CEO. If at the Arsenal the South African dealt only with commercial and financial aspects, now in the Rossoneri's sphere of influence it also extends to the sports area, crossing in fact the ambits of Leonardo, a professional who by his admission likes to feel free.

CorSera - Milan, Gazidis has already identified Leonardo's replacement: it is Luis Campos del Lille
05.22.2019 09:11 by Enrico Ferrazzi

While waiting to understand if Leonardo will really give up his resignation at the end of the season, the Rossoneri ad, Ivan Gazidis, has already identified the potential successor of the Brazilian: Luis Campos, Portuguese sports director of Lille, a club very close to Elliott. Corriere della Sera reports this morning.

I think Leo did an alright job, and i would be sad to see him leaving..but the last bit from CorSera gives me hope.

It would seem like they have a plan to take Milan back to the top, just not with an all Milan legends board. Now while that's not how i would like it, i don't particularly care who get the job done, as long as they do it.

We kept our best players despite not having made the champions league recently and we will do so again. Heck we added top notch talent in Piatek and Paqueta even in our mediocrity.

If we made the champions league we certainly won’t be selling many of our best players like they would and that’s a fact.

Teams like Atalanta in the champions league is bad news for Italy

It would be a shame to see Atalanta in Champions League, as they wouldn't represent the league.

But it is what it is. They deserved it.

We need to keep changing people every 6-12 months to keep new ideas flowing.

TBF and unfortunately this was expected. Leonardo is a superstar SD who wants to deal with the best players and agents in the game aiming high. At the time he was hired, maybe the vision wasn't clear for Elliott where to go with Milan. And after they decided to go with u23 route, Leonardo didn't share the ambition of the club.

This might be juvemedia trying to shake things up before next weekends decider but we will see.

Hopefully the club can keep Maldini...

Any transfer rumours should be halted till sunday

RnB should go on lock down till sunday

At the moment, we are on the verge of losing the champions league spot to two Neri-Azzuri(s)

and that's frustating

It seems more like it's Leo resigning, Gazidis tried to get him to stay but it seems unlikely. Leo wants a role with more power.

With rumours growing that Leonardo is leaving, Maldini's position in the Milan management will be assured. Elliott and Gazidis sees Paolo as a precious figure to maintain a recognizable identity at the club. [GdS]

We expect another 3-4 years of mediocrity in which the maximum goal will be the fourth place. This is waiting for Elliott to settle the accounts, resolve the issues with UEFA and sell the club. Leo is smart that's why he's leaving.
