I'm sort of indifferent when it comes to bacca. On one hand, Milan has conceded the joint third least goals, and our midfield is a little better than we get credit for. Beginning of the season it was awful, but our midfield has grown to the point where we've been able to consistently get the ball into the final third, and dominate possession against the best teams in the league. Then you look at our goals scored, and from that perspective, it's not the midfield or defense holding back this team. It's the attack, and we do clearly lack consistent goalscorers. It does make you think that with a consistent forward or two, Milan would be a couple spots higher in the table.
At the same time, I don't think bacca is a good fit for the current team. Last year Milan was more direct, and he fit better. And I also do think that if Milan improves the team the way we will try to do this summer, bacca will get better looks and won't have to deal with as many balls from wide areas. I don't see the point in debating his quality, he's obviously proved he can score goals in multiple leagues and had a good year last season.
My biggest problem with him hasn't been his wastefulness(even though he was deadly last season), but his complete lack of aerial ability. Apart from his goal this week, he just doesn't score or win the ball in the air enough. For a player that gets open so easily, he has no excuse to not be at least better at that part of the game. With Suso and some others, it's been clear all year we need someone to take advantages of the great crossing we have sometimes.
Another thing to consider for transfers in general though is that attack is by far the easiest area for Milan to grab a great player. Truth great mids and defenders don't change teams very often, and they don't leave the biggest clubs. I find it very hard to believe a midfielder with a value of 50ish mil or more would join Milan right now. Which means our midfield splashes for now will mostly be restricted to upcoming talents(kessie types) or just plain good players(badelj). But we could splash big on a striker or attacker. I really really want to grab bernardeschi, even if we keep deu and Suso, but Milan does have a legit shot at picking up a high profile forward. More so than a mid or defender for sure. So there's for sure a chance the Chinese will be looking to upgrade bacca.
