Europe's elite are shafting the poor so enjoy Leicester City while you can

But first, Italy, the biggest winners in this new shake-up. The basics you already know. Serie A will soon have four teams, guaranteed, in the Champions League group stage, despite a quite disastrous record in the play-offs.

As of now, Italy get three teams into the tournament, except in six of the last seven seasons an Italian entrant has fallen in the preliminary elimination rounds.

Yet the rich kids of Serie A, the underachieving Milan clubs first among them, have made enough threats of a European breakaway in recent months to rattle rudderless UEFA.

So, from the season after next, half of the group stage places will be split between four countries: Spain, England and Germany — whose clubs tend to make the necessary progress through the play-offs — plus over-rated Italy.

A country that can barely merit three teams at elite level will now be entitled to one more, and no play-off required.

Yet, as with much of what UEFA do, the devil is in the details. And what details they are. On page 11 of the UEFA document announcing the new cycle, the extent of Italy's gain can be found; or, to be precise, the extent of the gain for one club: AC Milan.

That Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA's director of club competitions, should be one of the prime movers in the reorganisation of the Champions League co-efficients is no doubt purely coincidental.

Marchetti was born in Luino, north of Milan, was educated in Milan, and supports Milan. Not that he will have let that cloud his thinking when plotting this new course — or allowed Milan's enormous self-regard to skew the competition in their favour.

.......................
......................
Congratulations to don Marchetti!

Finally, the current UEFA director of competitions Giorgio Marchetti was appointed UEFA Deputy General Secretary.

Co-eff logic is irrational; only about chest-thumping.

I think there's a fair chance Bundes will bottle it this year - Milan and Lazio in Europa League will be key to Serie A re-claiming the spot.

^Good point. 15/16 and 16/17 coefficient points are identical for Serie A and Ligue 1 with Bundes and EPL a little ahead. If Ligue 1 continue this way, there will be a 4-league fight for 3 spots by the 2019/20 season.

If you look at 2021 rankings now with points coming in so far for 16/17 and what has been played for this season, Germany is 5th below France: https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method5/crank2021.html

It matters because Serie A doesn't technically "have" 4 spots. Its the top 4 leagues that have 4th spot. If France overtakes Serie A then its back to 3 spots

The gap is too big. Don't think it's doable for France

Serie A a full point ahead of Bundesfodder now, after Milan's win and Atalanta's draw.

France led by PSG can be a threat in the future .

You look at a club like Lyon, they might have a good team 1 year but then they're shit the next. You need a strong core not a couple of great teams

I see PSG and Monaco as their core in CL, and Nice doing well in EL this year. While I don't see them getting 14 points every year like last year. If say German teams start playing like shit (their teams are not taking EL seriously) then yeah France could threaten them. Also next year they're going to get rid of that 13/14 bad year.

France in my opinion are producing the best talents the last few years, and with the big money spending that PSG is doing, it garner interest in their league. They have a long way to go to compete with Italy and Germany but you can't just write them off as a farmer league anymore.

As always, this moronic coefficient system depends on the Europa League performance first and foremost. More points to be had there and teams from the big leagues have easier opponents there.

So just as Germany got 3rd primarily by doing well in EL, Ligue 1 can also easily end up racking the points there.

It's a broken system and has no real correlation to the relative strengths of a league.

Nah, the gaps are way bigger than you give credit. France is lightyears away from Germany/Italy and all this while they're having a good run. Soon the tide might turn. Their fight is with Portugal and Russia.

As you keep shedding past years, the difference between France and Germany keeps dropping. In 2019 ranking, France is only 9 points behind Italy and Germany. With only last season and this season so far, they are ahead of Germany. Who knows - with the way EL is, I can totally see French teams getting more points than German teams for a couple of seasons and that's that.

My point is that with the system being so broken, it's not easy to predict just on the basis of the relative quality of leagues. Fluke point-scoring can easily happen.

To further illustrate my point, take a look at the 2008 ranking table: https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method3/crank2008.html

France (52) ahead of Germany (48) and Russia (43) and the 3 of them seem engaged in a fight for the 4th place. Italy is quite a bit ahead (60) in 3rd place, 12 points ahead of Germany. (Only 9 pts gap between France and Germany in 2019 rankings).

Fast forward 2 years to 2010 and Germany has caught up with Italy. They would overtake them in 2011.
https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2010.html

So things can change very quickly.

I disagree. Italy fluked one year and a lot were on #coefficientforce only to be turned down year after year. Need more than that. (same when Portugal got ahead of ITA on the starting block one year) We'll see if Italy can protect third spot till the end of the year. atm it was near prfect round with 1 draw and all other won while bundessniffers all (!!!) lost (most had tough games as well).
