Alessandro Nesta (born March 19, 1976 in Rome) is an Italian football player. He plays at centre-half for A.C. Milan in Serie A, and right now he is considered one of the best defenders in the world.

Sandro had a happy childhood in his quarter of Cinecitto, in the suburbs of Rome. He attends the primary school at "Margherita Bosco". In Cinecitto is where he started his career, and he was signed by Lazio at the tender age of nine. Fernando, Alessandro's older brother is advised to play sport by a doctor because of a back problem and is enrolled at the local football club. Alessandro threw a tantrum and his father gave in and he was also enrolled, and so his career began.

In 1985, he joined the youth academy of S.S. Lazio, where he rose through the ranks playing in various positions, including striker and midfielder. His international career first showed signs of development when he played for the Italian national Under-15 and Under-16 sides. In 1993, he managed to join Lazio's first-team squad.

In 1996, Nesta was a member of the Italian Under-21 team that defeated Spain to win the European Under-21 Championship, picking up the award for best defender in the tournament along the way. He made hid full international debut for Italy against Moldova on October 5, 1996. In 1997, he was given the captaincy of Lazio. It was in the 1997-98 season that Lazio won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup), beating A.C. Milan in the final, with Nesta amongst the goal-scorers.

Just before the 2002-'03 season, Nesta joined A.C. Milan. With Milan, he has won the Scudetto Serie A (Italian Championship), Coppa Italia, Champions League and the European Super Cup.

Nesta has appeared over 60 times for the Italian national team and has been a mainstay in it since the late 1990s. He played for his country in Euro 96, the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2000, the 2002 World Cup, and Euro 2004.

Nesta's fiance is Gabriela Pagnozzi (daughter of Raffaelle Pagnozzi, General Secretary of CONI). She was working for "Casa Italia" (headquarters of the Azzurri) during the 1998 World Cup. "I can say, I got the injury and her in France then. And the injury has gone, she has stayed with me." She's a specialist in economics. Sandro said that it was love from first sight. He was injured after the World Cup game against Austria. Gabriela took care of him, and this is how this love story began. He lived in Rome in a private residential area called Olgiata, near Formello, where Lazio's training center is based. Now, they live together in Milan.

He was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.

Cool article, thanks for posting it.

Milan have Nesta concern Monday 10 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan stopper Alessandro Nesta could miss the big clash against Juventus later this month because of injury.

The defender is suffering with a hand problem which has seen him ruled out of Wednesday’s insignificant World Cup qualifier against Moldova.

Nesta is believed to have damaged ligaments in his left hand which may see him sidelined for up to three weeks.

There is even a risk that surgery could be needed in an effort to resolve the problem, which the player has been struggling with since the start of September.

The former Lazio captain will undergo a number of tests, but whispers are already suggesting that he could be unavailable for the game against Juve on October 30.

The loss of Nesta would be a massive blow to the Rossoneri seeing as they have already struggled defensively so far this term

------------------------------------------------------
according to AcMilan.com he will out for 3 or 4 week

OK guys, truth is he has been off form for quite a while, no big loss at this time. Maybe Simic can step up + be more than an adequate sub.

Nesta: Op And One Month On The Sidelines

AC Milan will have to do without their star central defender Alessandro Nesta for the next month.

Nesta’s four week layoff is due to an injury to his left hand, that only an operation can resolve.

Nesta is expected to go under the knife on Wednesday.

The former Lazio skipper’s injury might reopen the club vs. country row as it appears Nesta worsened the injury during the course of Saturday’s match versus Slovenia.

Milan say they had asked the Italian federation to rest Nesta, after an Italy team doctor had diagnosed the problem to the first finger of his left hand on Friday.

Nesta however, wanted to play at all costs.

I wouldn't like to have to relly on Marek and Cafu to put in the tackles when needed. That line up simply lack's enough grunt in my view, even with Rino and/or Ambro sitting infront of it. I would much rather see Marek, Kaladze and Cafu rotate and have 3 solid defender's at the back, i.e. -Stam - Billy - Maldini - . With the odd appearence from Simic to avoid exhaustion of the 3 oldies.

Yeah we need Billy to put his heart and soul into the defence. We need him at all costs. Stam cannot really fill in for Cafu at right back and seeing the amount of games we have in the next month, it seems that Carlo has to use Simic at all costs. Hope we get out well from this mess. This is another unexpected blow after Jankulovski's...damn national teams
But come on...Forza Milan!!! This period of Nesta's absence is a test that will show how strong the character of Milan is.

Nesta out for a month Monday 10 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan have been dealt a massive blow with the confirmation that Alessandro Nesta will be sidelined for the next four weeks.

The stopper has picked up ligament damage in his left hand and will require surgery to resolve the problem.

Nesta will go under the knife on Wednesday and will subsequently be out of action for the next month.

He will therefore be unavailable for the Week 10 Scudetto showdown against Juventus at the end of October.

The Italian international is likely to be ruled out for five Serie A matches and two Champions League ties.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti will now be forced to stick with a central defensive pairing of Jaap Stam and Paolo Maldini.

His other rearguard options include veteran stopper Billy Costacurta, now 39, and Dario Simic.

Once again we're depending on "Il Senatore" Costacurta...i like him very much, but 3-5 matches in four weeks? I think it's too much for him...maybe he's alllowed to play in a wheel chair!
I hope he'll demonstrate once again that he's a true champion!
Or Mazzoratti gets his chance in central defence...

Damn, Nesta is the only player in our team that we cannot afford to lose. This is really bad for us.
I can only hope that our offence can make up for it now.

Your not much of a fan if you belive that? we're a world class team! The best in the world, we're not a one man team! Maldini will take up CB, a position he's world class in and Kaladze who go lb i think, the defence will be still be solid! i do agree we will miss nesta it is a abig blow but some of you are jumping the gun too much, world class teams can cope with out some of their key players thats what makes them world class. Their's to many people who think we're a one man team and to be honest it anoys me the lack of faith some of you have in your team, your meant to support AC Milan!
