What position you think he was playing? To me his characteristics are more of a mezzala than a defensive midfielder especially in Allegris system because the dm sits directly in front of the defense.

Montolivo needs freedom to attack a little bit too. If I remember correctly, Monty used to be a winger/CAM for Italy's U21.

Montolivo, Aquilani and Nocerino formed the midfield.

and as i remember it was nocerino as anchor, montolivo LCM, Aquilani RCM.

Yeah, he does a lot of same things as christian ledesma or thiago motta or xabi alonso or michael carrick. Keeps team ticking/moving. Spreads play.

He's no pirlo or aquilani though, when it comes to playmaking vision.

Still provides something milan need.

Like I said, i think allegri is looking for montolivo to play anchor and have our mezzala's do similarto marchisio/vidal with juve. In that sense, someone like asamoah would be a great signing.

hell no.

double pivot? yes, emergency anchor, yes.

montolivo at anchor with nocerino who averages 1.4 tackles a game and god knows who else? no.

Though i really can't wait to add him to our crappy Midfield, he is surely an improvement. And this could probably be the only midfield signing this summer, knowing B&G. Flamini like a new signing

At the moment this is our midfield (considering flams and muntari both resign) :

Boateng(Binho-El92)
Montolivo(Muntari)-Traoré(ambrosini-strasser)-Nocerino(flamini) .

I defenetly think we are missing 1 more quality midfield , but montolivo is a solid start .
