Actually I started reading The Lord of The Rings, but it's surprisingly boring!! :head: I finished reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then I started reading that one, but there's a big difference between those two so I don't seem to cope with The Lord Of the Rings!!! I thought Harry Potter is much more fun!! What a child you must be saying
Anyway, I've been also reading The light house keeper and I think I'm gonna continue it!!

:)

eh! forgot to post what Im reading

Im readin a book called The Disappearance of Childhood for my TV & Society class. It talks about how childhood was only introduced about 400 years ago...when people started to become literate...and how in this day and age childhood is going to disappear because we all (children and adults) depend so much on television.

weird stuff. but I guess thats what college is for. To make you read weird books! :D

Finally, somebody who can admit it's a shitty book. The movie's fat, but the book is a drag. I don't understand what the fuss about it all is about.
I've recently finished a true classic: John Steinbeck's "The grapes of wrath". It was really good

Good to see most of you guys are reading the classics......although, maybe it was not your choice.

I have just finished the book, "American Psycho." Hmmmm......that guy reminds me of me in some ways........ahhhhh.....well, I do not cut up women into pieces or anything, but I used to like Genesis.... :D

Right now, I am re-reading a classic book by the eccentric Oscar Wilde.......that being "A Picture of Dorian Gray." Wilde's only full length novel is a masterpiece which certainly shows how hedonism can lead one straight into a cave of depravity. The dialogues in the book are absolutely classic, as one character in particular, Lord Henry Wooten is absolutely majestic and sparkling in conversation.

I also have oen other book I am looking into right now........it isn't so much a book, as it is a reference guide of humor. It is called "The Devil's Dictionary," by Ambrose Bierce, an American.

Excellent book to.....

Enjoy your reading odyessys people ;)

Well I just finished a couple of books.

A Brief History of Time - from the Big Bang to Black Holes by Stephen Hawking
The Handy Physics Books - Real Life Applications of Physics by multiple authors
The Complete Compendium of Reef Aquariums - Vol. 2 Taxonomy, Reproduction and Care Delbeck and Sprung
Don Quitoxe - by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

and I know I've said this already but right now I'm reading A Season with Verona by Tim Parks. You should check it out as it's a great book so far.

It's a great book about an Englishmen who goes gets a season pass to all of Hellas Veron's (home and away) for the 2000 season and sits in the middle of the Curva Sud with all of the hardcores from the Brigate Gallabou. I'm sure I spelled that wrong, but I don't have it with me now as I've been reading February's World Soccer in which Sheva is on the cover and Milan are their main focus! :devil2:

Yeah, it's a great book. Ellis work made me feel the same way. You really do connect with the maniac. I just would like to know how you interpret the ending. Do you think he was dreaming it all? Or what?

I liked it as it made me laugh a lot. I had never seen the play or new much about it so I though it was really going to be about a knight who traveled about Spain helping people. Then I realized he was just crazy and that most people just decided to play along with him as it was easier then argueing w/ him. Favorite parts are when he attacked the windmills and when he "fought" the lions. :D

I used to be the same way until I got to college and started learning things I actually cared about like space, evolution, philosophy, mostly science type stuff. I am just huge on knowing why things are they way they are so I figured who better to tell me then the eperts. Only problem is sometimes a lot of the books I read end up being more like school text books then reading books so I try to mix it up with stuff that makes me laugh like Don Quixote.

Now that I think about it I really started reading because I lost my Game Boy and I take public transit to work. So rather than stare at the wall or the other people on the metro I read. ;)

Excellent discussion topic here. I think Ellis in a sense leaves the ending the way he does, so the reader can speculate if it happened or not. I personally think it took place inside his head. and I have just watched the movie, and I KNOW in the movie it took place inside his head, because in the movie everyone says things like, "oh yeah, Pat Bateman.......he is a dork." Implying that Bateman sits around and does nothing. (nothing of course = fantcises about ripping girls apart and then swimming in their guts and organs........or nailing every single finger and toe into the floor and after the molestation process..........eating her small intestine.....yum-yum)

I think that Bateman dreamed it, but once again, Ellis leaves this open for the readers speculation.

I did not interpret as you did, even though I know where you're coming from in this matter. I thought it was just the tragic reality of the modern age that one can do this kind of stuff and still get away with it. And even more if you are a rich and respected society person.
But the story does leave place for ypur interpretation as a certainity when he kills his colleague and leaces the corpse in his apartment. When he returns, the place is up for sale and no body has or is to be found. Kind of eerie.

I don't if you knew this but psycholigists believ that Bateman's sexual behaviour is based on the matter that he is gay and in big denial. That's why always has to show how masculine he is, eg by banging two girls at a time. But this also how he gets in touch with homosexual side. Two girls, you know. And the constant hardcore-anal-homosexual-porn-waching. Plu the anal and materialistic personality (and the somewhat gayish music he listens to).
Not to neglect the fact of what happens in the men's room with his nerdy colleauge.
I don't say this theory is an absolute truth but it is a cool way of seeing things. Them psychologists sure do analyse stuff, I tell you that.

If you want to read about a mind going crazy, then read a book called 'Auto da Fe' by Elias Cannetti who won the Nobel prize about 20 years ago. A bit heavy but excellent and much better than American Psycho. My favorite though is Steinbeck... Cannery Row IMO is one of the finest examples of writing in the English language.

I don't say this theory is an absolute truth but it is a cool way of seeing things. Them psychologists sure do analyse stuff, I tell you that.

I totally agree with you, which is why I said, Ellis leaves it up for speculation. Its also helps to understand a bit about New York City when reading American Psycho. I myself have only been there for 2 weeks at one point in time, and I didn't really examine the battery park yuppie crowd. But that is the reason in the book why no one seems to know anybody' name. Because of that fact that they are essentially the same people. From clothing, age, education, social status, ect.....

But your theory about Bateman being a homosexual sounds reasonable. The music that he listens to......ummm, yes certainly weak by todays standards, but then again in 1988 or 87 (in which the book takes place) I suppose those were chart toppers, lol.

Also, a good book/movie to watch is called "Manhunter." Which is essentially, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal all wrapped up into one, and furthermore....more gruesome.

i've just started grisham's 'the king of torts' ... not enough pages yet to express myself.
i too usually read on public transport (basically when i go to/come from court), because i prefer that rather than inspect how weird the people around tend to be; at times i read during w/e's, not lately though with two young kids boycotting such plan; sometimes (when the book is particularly good) i do read during lunch-times

Too right Karin...despite the fact it was recommended by that cow Oprah Winfrey in her idiotic book club, the Poisonwood bible was a fantastic novel. :D
