i think we can use 3 man defence with de rossi in there with chiellini nd bonucci or whoever (how i wish pirlo nd prandelli could talk nesta out of retirement for one last hurrah).

apparently Italy called Astori and asked him to come back from his vacation.

Wouldnt mind seeing him with Chiellini, smart player that reads the game well to go with the more physical player

Astori but no Acerbi?

And if Ogbonna was chosen ahead of Astori in e first squad, shouldn't he play ahead of Astori?

Ogbonna may be called up as leftback too, so not necessary.

Cool, did any of them get a chance to play yet?
Paloschi got about 20 minutes. El Shaarawy got about 6. Romagnoli played 1 minute (and came in for Paloschi after Veratti got sent off).

not even close.

2002 on the other hand... :fp:

What a shame of a tournament.

Never know if italy would have advanced to final, and i don't know if they'd beat Brazil (probably not) but I would have loved to see Cafu v. Maldini. Ronaldo/Rivaldo v. Nesta/Cannavaro

and of course.... cristiano zanetti v. gilberto silva :o

Trapattoni hopes for Spain-Italy draw

Giovanni Trapattoni is hoping that Spain and Italy draw in Sunday evening’s Group C opening fixture at Euro 2012.

The Republic of Ireland Coach will face both teams in the group stages of this summer’s European Championships and recognises the importance of three points against Croatia for his team.

However, the former Italy boss suggested that even a draw with Slaven Bilic’s side will suffice for Irish hopes of a quarter-final berth, if the Azzurri also draw with Spain.

“We know perfectly well that the first match is very important, as important as the other first match, Italy against Spain,” the Italian veteran reflected on UEFA.com.

“So the first 90 minutes will have an impact on the tournament. It's very important to win the first match, which would give us a certain advantage, but it would also be important not to lose. Then you'd need to judge it in light of the Italy-Spain result.

“The first results will be important. If it's two draws, then it might be possible to qualify with four points.

The way that Prandelli play his football is the cause that Italy could meet scoring problem.
Hopefully it won't happen.

Xabi Alonso admires Pirlo
By Football Italia staff

Xabi Alonso believes Italy are “combative and competitive” when under pressure, revealing Spain have studied Andrea Pirlo and their tactics carefully.

The two nations go head to head in the Group C opener on Sunday at 17.00 UK time.

“Scandals and injuries are just reasons for us to be even more concerned about facing Italy,” Xabi Alonso told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“All this chaos makes us even more alert, because we know what the Azzurri are like. We saw you in 2006 with a big scandal, Juventus sent to Serie B and Italy winning the World Cup.

“Italy are combative and competitive when dealing with difficulties. The problems they are going through do not remotely relax us.”

Cesare Prandelli is likely to switch to a 3-5-2 system after three consecutive friendly defeats without scoring a goal.

“We are studying hard. If you play with five at the back, five in the middle, four in a diamond or with the Christmas Tree formation, we are ready.

“That won’t make us change the way we play, though. It’s just about being intelligent and trying to anticipate the moves of our opponents. We pay attention, but are not obsessed by tactics,” continued Xabi Alonso.

“Pirlo is decisive and that is certainly not a surprise. This season he did a great thing, as it wasn’t easy to leave Milan after a spectacular career as leader and model player to join Juve and win the title with style.

“Pirlo has always put himself forward as a reference point for seeking ever more beautiful football. I always liked Pirlo, because he never wanted to be a protagonist off the field, so ended up being one for what he does on the pitch.”

he played well for Roma when they used him there, he would add a passing dimension out of the back that they currently dont have

I'm liking the 3-5-2 idea, it should work to Italy's strengths, and it will be even stronger if and when Barzagli is fit

Italy in positive mood for Spain test

Cesare Prandelli has called for a "dynamic, active and energetic" Italy when they take on defending champions Spain whose coach Vicente del Bosque knows a tough test awaits.

After admitting that the prospect of facing tournament holders Spain was not causing him to lose sleep, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said he would be sending his side out for the Group C opener in Gdansk with the intention "to win".

When the draw for UEFA EURO 2012 was made at the Palace of Arts in Kyiv last December, excitement abounded at the prospect of an encounter between the last two world champions and now that it has finally arrived, the coach of the Azzurri called on his players to be "dynamic, active and energetic" as they seek to upset a Spain team unbeaten in their last 14 competitive encounters.

"We have good feelings about the match and have trained well," the 54-year-old informed a packed press conference ahead of the 30th meeting between these teams. "We have prepared in a positive way and we are fully aware that we have a good team. If we work together we can be really competitive."

With Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli currently nursing a left calf injury, midfielder Daniele De Rossi is expected to deputise in the heart of the Italy defence. "We have tried many options but this is something we often do," Prandelli explained. "If De Rossi he has to play in that position it won't be only as a defender but also as a defensive midfielder.

"Tomorrow we want to keep our opponents away from our penalty area. "They will probably have more possession and will cause us problems but when Italy play football as we know we can, we can fully challenge a team like Spain"."

Vicente Del Bosque, for his part, warned his side that they would need to be at their best in order to avoid a repeat of their opening defeat against Switzerland at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an outcome the Spain coach said would seriously hamper the team's chances of retaining the title they won four years ago. "In a group of four teams the first game is fundamental," he said. ""We want to start well but know we will have a very strong team in front of us"."

With midfielder Cesc Fàbregas having shaken off the thigh complaint he picked up in FC Barcelona's Copa del Rey final victory against Athletic Club, Del Bosque has a full 23-man squad available for what will be a repeat of the teams' EURO 2008 quarter-final encounter which Spain won on penalties.

"I have decided on my team but the players will not be informed until the morning of the game," the coach said, leaving many to guess as to which of Fernando Torres, Álvaro Negredo and Fernando Llorente will gain the starting role up front.

"There are always doubts when you have to pick 11 players and when everyone is so keen to play. We have a stupendous group who all get along well with one another. We prepared well for this tournament and are ready for any situation on the night."
