I saw an article the other day comparing Neuer and Cesar, and it got me think as to what the list of top goalies in the world looks like. I was wondering what you guys think.

I think that out of all the positions there are more cases of a goalie having a great year or two then being awful than any other group of players, and it brings up the question of form vs talent.

The players I think would be in the running would be-

Neuer
Stekelenburg
Lloris
Buffon
César
Hart
Casillas
Cech
Howard

I'm sure there are others too... just wondering what everyone thinks

buffon doesnt cut into the higher level not at the current form
Lloris has good reflex but he is shit when he rushes out

Tim Howard. He has become a good player, if it wast for him the US would have gotten shelled against Argentina, he played amazing, and he does that from time to time.

I think Buffon is a tough case since he isnt on form at the moment, but when he is he belongs there.

I had some issues putting Cesar on there, he has been very shaky (by his standards) the last 9 months or so.

Stekelenburg, Nueur, Casillas, Hart, Lloris Are the Best Today ! But De Sanctis is getting Pretty Good though !

Abbiati is definitely one of the best keepers in Europe on current form. I wouldn't replace him with anyone on the open market.

take out howard, throw in rene adler. he's awesome. plus, on current form, i think abbiati should be above buffon.
frey and de sanctis maybe, been very good, though i not sure about world class

EDIT: never liked casillas, he's an excellent shotstopper, but unsteady at times, and makes ALOT of stupid mistakes. For me, the best keepers are the steady ones, not necessarily the ones who make unbelievable saves then get embarassed.

Abbiati has been one of the most consistent GKs in the world this season. He definitely deserves to be up there!

as a bit of a base, the 2010 IFFHS's World Keeper of the Year voting was-
1. Iker Casillas
2. Júlio César
3. Petr Čech
4. Manuel Neuer
5. Maarten Stekelenburg
6. Víctor Valdés
7. Fernando Muslera
8. Edwin van der Sar
9. Gianluigi Buffon
10. Tim Howard

I have always thought Valdes was overrated, I dont much care for him.
Muslera is still young and has the potential to get better, but I would put him as WC
Igor Akinfeev is another young keeper that has WC potential

I'm a Buffon fanboy.

Cech is good, but not as good as he was a couple of years ago.

Casillas is WC.

Cesar has been shaky this year, could also be because of the defence.

Abbiati can make miracle saves, but somehow I don't fee safe with him. 22 goals conceded is bad at all though. Say thanks to TS+Nesta

Storari shouldn't sit on a bench in this form (forgotten name)

Reina is a clown.

Van der Sar is awesome.

Valdes is underrated on this forum, but that's because of the Barca hate and that youtube vid :tongue:

Abbiati is not on top 10 Goalkeeper in the World, he have had good saves, But his kick are awful, Can't handle Pressure, Sometimes a bit slow, but the save against Inter Was Very good save !!!

Abbiati is decent keeper but not top 10 in the World.
We have a very good defence !!! Take that in a note !!!

Casillas, Valdes, Stekelenburg, Cech, Van Der Sar, Howard, Nueur, Julio César, Buffon are all better than him, and i don't care about this year... !!!

De Sanctis has been the best Goalkeeper in Serie A this Season in my mind.

Even Storari is very good !!!

Abbiati is doing a great job for us. It would be ridiculous if we spend cash on a new first goalkeeper, makes no sense.

I would love to see Neuer joining us for free in 2012 though. Maybe unlikely, but oh well. Awesome, and young.

I should note that 5 of those goals were conceded by Amelia

Storari, De Sanctis, and Buffon are very good...but this season Abbiati has really been great u know..some football website named Abbiati the best performing GK in the Serie A for the first half of 2010-11.

But this season, Abbiati is better than Buffon

Heck, even Storari is better than Buffon IMO this season.

I dont watch many Napoli matches so I cant comment much on De Sanctis.. I remember he was very good though when he was in Udinese.

Storari has great reflexes but concedes some he should've been able to save...and its not like he is completely prone to mistakes.

Its easy to look at things that others have and see it as better than ours..

But I agree with you, those guys either have much greater career than Abbiati so far (Cesar, Casillas, Buffon, Cech, VdS) or has the potential to have greater career (Neuer, Stekelenburg)

Talking about Valdes, is he really that good? I know he is decent but I believe he was made looking good due to the fact that the attackers can't get nowhere near his penalty box with all the 60% plus possession that Barca had. It's like Sebastiano Rossi with Milan in mid 90s, he didn't concede a lot of goals because the defense in front of him was super outstanding.

Yeah, and another thing that reminds me of Rossi when it comes to Valdes is miracle saves in one game, stupid mistakes in another.

Or I should say "lack of consistency"

I think Valdes is excellent. He has made a lot of fuck ups in his time, but who hasn't? Casillas does it it on occasions. Certainly Julio Cesar, and Buffon the last couple of years.

What people forget to think about when talking about Valdes is how excellent he is on the ball. He often distributes the ball almost like a sweeper, making himself available for passes and never thu,bs the ball up field no matter how pressured he is. That coupled with awesome reflexes, makes him perfect for Barcelona in many ways.

Anyways, at the moment I'd say Neuer is most definitely the best goalkeeper. He just has something special, that's reminiscent of a 1992 Schmeichel or a Buffon a couple of years ago. He controls the area, organizes the defense, quick of his line and has excelletn reflexes. Imo he's a special talent.

Spot on with the Rossi comparison. I remember him in his later years when the defense was a lot worse and he was so prone to disaster.

Anyway, at the moment I still rate Buffon the highest, though I agree he's not top form. However, his sheer experience and skill give out an air of confidence to everyone in front of him and even the fans - with him on goal you expect a miracle save and not conceding. That's the main reason I prefer him over anyone. When you see him, you know it will be hard to score.
