It's mostly done because of the radio.

First of all it's assumed that a more compressed song stands out more cause it'll appear louder; secondly it's more convenient when listening to music in the background, since the entire songs will have the same level of loudness, meaning that listeners won't be 'disturbed' by very loud segments.

But it's not just Oasis, it's everyone really.
