with time, i can see abate becoming the type of winger we need..i don't really like him playing in defense, as much as him playing the winger role..if he can control his crosses and get better placement with them, then he can become very essential for us in many ways..remember, he is coming from lower clubs and will take time to get his skills up to par..hes got some good speed to track down the ball, and will be the type of player we need in the coming years..

agreed...i like him as well but i don't like him playing the last line of defense. he's a bit too unpredictable. last line of defense needs to be calm&confident...maldini, nesta types. abate seems to panic a bit back there

i know that's why i always hated playing defense...too much pressure ;)

i think midfield would be a better place for him...he could do more there...just my 2cents

I think he's looked great in defense considering he's played 2 or 3 games there. He can learn to play fb, he's big/strong enough and has a team commitment to defense. The tactical awareness comes from exerience and playing. He has the makings of the modern fb being able to push forward and cross.

remember some of the best weren't exactly defensive greats, but they knew how to push forward enough to literally stop attack from coming (Cafu is prime example).

While he provided energy + pace to the attack, he isn't yet mature enough to understand how to build attacks + his technical ability is a bit limited for an out and out right winger.

I think his future lies in the RB role ...

He's a good player to have, quite refreshing with his pace and stamina. Still a bit raw, lacking in composure, but its obvious he's the future on the wing, either as wingback or winger, kinda like Serginho. I don't see his technique as a weakness as well, he has good skillset for the wing, with experience he will become a definite important part of the first 11. I agree with madthercot and milano84 that he should be played more ofthen as a wingback to get to know the position better, because offensively he does a good job.

you'll have to forgive me for not understanding all the positions and tactical terms mentioned here...wingers, wingbacks etc. when i played we had forwards, midfielders and defenders...i realize it's far too simplified, but that is still how i see the game

from what i could tell, abate played a midfield position in the game against roma and i thought he really nailed it...he was all over the field, in all the right places...until he got injured :(

he might still have the makings of a defender for milan...but i don't see why he should...
> 2 or 3 games playing defense - average performances
> 1 game playing midfield - great intentsity and he seemed in his zone

either position though, i really hope he is not badly injured from the roma game

Fair enough. Wingback is like what zambrotta is (started as a winger, became a fullback but a more attacking version of one). Brazilians like roberto carlos and cafu define the term wingback IMO. The most classic way is a wide player in a 3-5-2 who provides width in attack w/ crosses and defends.

Since we don't use conventional wingers, having fb's who can move forward and provide crosses is vital.

anyway I see zambrotta as a fine example. He was a LM/RM for juve for years before they made him a FB. After he adjusted, he was probably considered best fb in world (until his inevitable decline). I see alot of similar characteristics in abate.

I didn't think he looked good in midfield to be honest, he isnt skilled enough to beat defenders consistantly, nor strong enough in possession. His best attributes IMO are 1) his work ethic/will. 2) his pace/stamina. 3) his crosses.

At FB he can provide the overlapping run and get off crosses easier. The defensive part and tactical awareness will come with experience. All things considered, i don't think he looked bad at all in 3 games in defense.

defense can be taught. But by 23 years old the skill you have is probably what you will have till your done. Hes not technically gifted enough to be that winger that can get in behind defenders. thereeeefore...put him in defense and he can help us there

I think with lots of practice and work Abate can really be a good RB, as from what I see from Cissokho's way of playing (on his game against Liverpool) Abate looked a bit similar to Aly, off course aly looks better atm because wb is his natural position, but in fairness Abate has the potential to be as good or even better, i think Abate is a bit faster than cissokho..if aba work on the timing of his crossing and also linking up with his midfielder .. he can be a good RB for us

on another note. i hope to see abate back healthy quick. he's done nothing but good for us and he will be an important piece of the new milan puzzle. my dream is for him to be at RB and krasic to be at RM. what a right side that would be..

Sprained his ankle against Roma; he had to come out the game at halftime.

His first yellow was kinda harsh. Really unlucky especially since he played really well. Made a few mistakes but thats expected. I like how he left the pitch all pissed and frustrated. Really makes it easy to see how motivated he is to help milan:)

Abate made a few mistakes?
Kaladze must be in contention for the Ballon D'Or in that case.
