That Bleacher Report article looks like the writer didn't do his research and was BSing half the time.

Leonardo was a great manager. We were in the thick of things for the scudetto until Nesta went down. That's with Pato's constant injury problems and B&G's unwillingness to strengthen the squad. I doubt anyone could have done better

Allegri's Cagliari team was in 12th place last year before he got sacked. They dropped 4 spots after Melis took over.

I don't think Merda will be advancing far in the CL simply because they have lost their best player - Mourinho. He's always a dick but he was the main carrier in Merda's success last season, not Snejder or anybody else.

Serie A : Expectations 2010-11@THT

Serie A : Expectations
Monday, August 23rd, 2010 | Posted by Guest Author

Internazionale won an unprecedented treble last season. Title rivals Milan and Juventus struggled to provide any sort of resistance to the Nerazzuri juggernaut; Roma put up a fight, but it was not enough. Inter still look the strongest team on paper.

Inter

Position Last season: 1st – 82 Points

Expectations from the Season: Scudetto

Major Transfers

In: Jonathan Biabiany (Parma), Luca Castellazzi (Sampdoria), Phillippe Coutinho (Vasco da Gama), Nicolas Burdisso (Roma)

Out: Marko Arnautovic (Werder Bremen), Ricardo Quaresma (Besiktas), Francesco Toldo (retired), Rene Krhin (Bologna), Mario Balotelli (Man City)

Strong rumours: Giuseppe Sculli (Genoa), Cristian Ledesma (Lazio)

Season synopsis

Inter have concluded their most successful season in history by winning the treble. This season, including the supercups, Inter will be playing for six trophies. In spite of other challengers strengthening themselves, the squad remains the strongest in Italy by a comfortable margin. Treble winning coach Jose Mourinho broke quite a few hearts by announcing his departure to Real Madrid, and his successor Rafael Benitez will have huge boots to fill. The expectations of the fans are nothing less than the nineteenth Scudetto, plus a decent run in Europe.

The core of the team which won the Scudetto has been retained. For Rafael Benitez, the task is even tougher. A failure to win the Scudetto will most likely mean that he will no longer be counted among the list of elite European coaches, not to mention a very likely sacking that will follow.

The squad will retain its first XI in entirety, with the talented problem child Mario Balotelli being banished to Manchester City. The real challenge for Rafa will be to retain the hunger for trophies in a squad which has now won everything.

Roma

Position last season: Second 80 Points

Expectations from the season: Scudetto

Major Transfers:

In: Adriano (Flamengo), Fabio Simplicio (Palermo), Gullerimo Burdisso (Rosario Central), Ahmed Barusso (Rimini)

Out: Marco Motta (Juventus), Luca Toni (Genoa), Nicolas Burdisso (Inter)

Strong Rumours: Nicolas Burdisso

Season Synopsis

Roma are the only team in the Top-4 which has retained the coach from last season. At one point Roma did look like winning the Scudetto, before a home loss to Sampdoria handed back Inter the initiative. This season fans expect the club to go one better.

Despite positivity on the field, off-field issues are dominating the headlines. The Sensi family which owned the club lost ownership when the creditors took possession, and are now in the process of finding buyers for the club. This has a big impact on any major transfer plans; all three transfers have been either free ones or loan deals.

Claudio Ranieri has managed to keep most of his squad intact with the exception of Nicolas Burdisso, for whom they haven’t been able to agree a fee with Inter. This season, however, Roma has the added pressure of competing in the Champions league. Unlike the poor cousin UEFA cup, Champions league is a money spinner for a cash strapped club. Given their squad depth, the progress in Champions League is likely to be at the cost of their league campaign.

Among new transfers, Adriano comes back to Europe a bit overweight, but with a lot to prove. On paper he can form a devastating combination with Francesco Totti. But then for that, to happen he will have to keep himself out of Roman nightclubs. If he can regain his 2004-06 form, he has the abilities to carry Roma to the Scudetto.

Juventus

Position last season: 7th 55 Points

Expectations from the season: Scudetto

Major Transfers

In: Leonardo Bonucci (Bari), Jorge Martinez (Catania), Marco Motta (Udinese), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Marco Storari (Milan), Milos Krasic (CSKA Moscow), Alberto Aquilani (Liverpool)

Outs: Fabio Cannavaro (Al Ahli), Martin Caceres (Barcelona), Claudio Immobile (Siena), Sebastian Giovinco (Parma), Christian Poulsen (Liverpool), Christian Molinaro (Stuttgart), Tiago (Atletico Madrid)

Strong Rumours: Salvatore Bocchetti/Benoit Tremoulinas

Season Synopsis: Last season the Old Lady had the worst season in over two decades. So bad was the performance, that game after game the team was booed by their own fans.

The management acted very swiftly and lured Coach Luigi Del Nieri and director Giuseppe Marrotta from Sampdoria. They have decided to go for a complete overhaul of the playing squad, and brought in Leonardo Bonucci and David Lanzafame, two of the most exciting talents in Italy. In addition they have signed full back Marco Motta from Roma and Simone Pepe from Udinese. There is a lot of speculation about a swap between Edin Dzeko and Diego. If that happens, a new midfielder is also likely to arrive. A lot of old heads have been let go, with Fabio Cannavaro leading the procession out.

For the fans of a club like Juventus, their team not fighting for scudetto is sacrilege. Juventus also face the disadvantage of competing in the not so glamourous UEFA Cup. This season, with the race for coefficients between Bundesliga and Serie-A, even UEFA cup performance carries a premium for the league.

Expectations will be high. However, question marks remains on the ability of Luigi Del Nieri. In short, a Scudetto might be a bit too high a mountain to climb for a young and newly assembled Juventus squad, especially this season. Expect the Old Lady to closely follow Inter/Roma in the race for the Scudetto.

AC Milan

Position last season: Third 70Points

Expectations from the season: Champions league Qualification

Major Transfers

In: Marco Amelia (Genoa), Mario Yepes (Chievo), S Papastathopoulos (Genoa), Kevin-Prince Boetang (Genoa)

Out: Matteo Darmian (Palermo), Giuseppe Favalli (out of contract), Marco Storari (Juventus)

Strong Rumours: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Season Synopsis

The Rossoneri were in the race for Scudetto for three quarters of last season, before spectacularly collapsing at the end. In an ideal world, the fans would expect the club to do one better and challenge for the title. However the Powers to be at Milan are holding on to their purse strings tighter than ever. This means that for the second season in a row, the ageing squad is not getting refreshed.

Coach Leonardo was sacked at the end of last season, and new coach Massimilano Allegri, who had done very well at Cagliari, has been roped in as his replacement.

Milan’s success last season was built on two foundations. One an increasingly injury prone Alessando Nesta managing to keep himself fit for majority of the season, and secondly Ronaldinho rediscovering his abilities with a view to secure his place in World Cup 2010. While Nesta staying fit cannot be guaranteed, Ronaldinho surely has lost the biggest motivation he had.

Mario Yepes has been signed up to shore up the defence, but it might be a case of too little. Massimilano Allegri has his task cut out in working with a squad with so many identified gaps. Officially the club has adopted a stance of bravado announcing that they will fight for the Scudetto; however, pessimism prevails among the fans. The realistic expectation for most of them is to finish in the top four, which will enable the club to play Champions league next season.

Sorry, i just find your way of writing out the expectations and stuff a bit stupid.

How come we are aiming for CL and Juve for Serie A when we have a younger squad which is arguably better and only bested by Inter? Plus we have enthused our team with loads of young talent while they do it on a smaller scale.

Sorry if i'm being rude, i just find it wholly unbelievable that you can consider us aiming lower than Juve this year.

Oh, and i think the guy who moved from Juve to Siena is actually called Ciro Immobile. Not Claudio, although i might be wrong. I just remembered him from my FM days. :D

+1
I don't know why people think jube have better squad lol
They do make brilliant FM transfer, but if you look closer their squad still inferior to us.

1. their defense depth is shit, practically they on same situation with us on last season where we have kaladze, oddo n favalli as main subs for nesta n silva

2. their winger signing not ensure anything, krasic not proven yet gonna works in serie A, martinez n pepe just mediocre at best.

3. They're only use 4-4-2 on Del neri hands, and that very predictable.

And just for the records, I'm not biased or anything with my point, I'm believe we just have little chance to win the scudetto.

Conclusion : even if you not optimist with milan can challenge Inter, plzzzz don't talk like jube strong enough for that lolz, you looked like total noobz for saying that.

Serie A : Best of the Rest@THT

Serie A : Best of the Rest
Thursday, August 26th, 2010 | Posted by Somnath Sengupta

Serie A has been downplayed in recent times as being boring and one-sided. With a single team winning the title in past few seasons, it’s hard to disagree with this perception. Internazionale is still the strongest team in Italy, by a fair distance; they might very well win a record breaking sixth title in a row. But hold on; once you get past the obvious winner, it gets really interesting. The patchy form of Milan and Juventus, combined with the rise of other teams, has suddenly made Serie A wildly exciting and unpredictable.

In the glory days of the 90s, Serie A was famously referred to as a fight between ‘Seven Sisters’. Other than Juventus and the Milanese teams, Sampdoria, Fiorentina, Parma and Roma also fought for the title. Last season, at one point, the 4th and 11th placed team was separated by mere 9 points. The league may not be such a cliff hanger these days, but the fight for the European spots will surely heat up again.

The contenders

Napoli

After the golden era of Maradona, Napoli struggled for years. They were rescued by Aurelio De Laurentis in 2004. Outspoken but prudent, the new owner has made brilliant investments, and The Azzuris have been on a steady upward curve. They are coached by Walter Mazzari, quite possibly the best tactician among the new generation of Italian coaches.

Last season, Mazzari turned Estadio De Paola into a fortress, with Napoli losing only two home games. Some of their best away results included a 3-2 win over Juventus, where they came back from being 2-0 down till the hour mark.

Despite some blistering football, Napoli lacked a prolific striker. While Quagliarella scored a few goals, neither German Dennis nor Ezequiel Lavezzi managed consistency. They were bailed out by Marek Hamsik on more than few occasions. Hamsik’s tally of 13 goals last season made him one of the most sought after players in Serie A.

To avoid last season’s problems, the squad has been bolstered with Palermo hit-man Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay striker enjoyed a brilliant season last year. With him, Napoli now has one of the most exciting frontlines in Italy. The midfield pair of Christian Maggio and Walter Gargano would like to replicate their superb form of last season. Centre-back Fabio Santacroce didn’t have the best of seasons in 2009-10, and his form would be crucial to Napoli’s season. Paolo Cannavaro and Huga Campagnaro form a stable central-defence, with the dependable Morgan De Sanctis in goal.

A lot will depend on how well Mazzari manages to juggle between Serie A and Europa League. Napoli have both the manager and the personnel to break into the top four.

Players to watch out for: Edinson Cavani, Christian Maggio, Marek Hamsik

THT Verdict: 5th

___________________________________________

Palermo

Sampdoria might have finished fourth last season, but it was Palermo who looked the most worthy competitor for most of the season. Since getting promoted in 2004, two things have remained consistent about them every season.

Firstly, Estadio Renzo Barbera has been one of the toughest away trips in Italy. Palermo have lost just 23 home matches in 6 years, including an unbeaten record in ’09-’10. They have finished in the top six in four out of last six seasons.

Secondly, eccentric president Zamparini has fired a coach. Walter Zenga audaciously claimed that Palermo would compete for Scudetto last season. They failed, and Zenga was axed. His replacement Delio Rossi did a commendable job. The Rossonero challenged till the last day, and missed out on a Champions’ League spot by just two points.

Palermo lost Simon Kjaer and Edinson Cavani in the transfer market. But they can bounce back; losing players like Toni, Grosso and Barzagli didn’t affect them before. The Southern Italian club’s Primavera unit won the League title in 08-09, and is one of the strongest youth teams in the peninsula.

Players to watch out for: Fabrizio Miccoli, Salvatore Sirigu, Javier Pastore, Mattias Cassani

THT Prediction: 7th

___________________________________________

Fiorentina

After going bankrupt in 2003, the once mighty Florentine club ceased to exist for some time. They were revived by a group of dedicated businessmen, and promptly came back to Serie A after a hiatus. The first major change was appointing Pantaleo Corvino as Sporting Director. Corvino, a shrewd transfer guru, made brilliant deals and scouted out unknown players who turned out to be gems. In the same season Cesar Prandelli was appointed as coach. Prandelli’s exciting 4-2-3-1 system with Toni as lone striker did wonders for them. Under his stewardship, Viola finished in the top five in three back to back seasons.

They started out well last season, but were pegged back by Adrian Mutu’s suspension. Mutu was crucial in the wings, and his absence led to Viola’s poor run of form. They did put on a decent run in Champions’ League, beating Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Prandelli left to coach La Nazionale and was replaced by Sinisa Mihailovic, who did admirably well at Catania.

Corvino has once again worked his magic, as Viola have snapped Gaetano D’Agostino. The highly rated Udinese play-maker joins an already dynamic attack led by Ricardo Montlivo and Juan Vargas. Vargas was one of the best players in Serie A last season and was pursued by a number of clubs. Alessandro Gamberini and Koldrup form the heart of the defence. In Sebastian Frey, Fiorentina have one of the best ‘keepers in Serie A; Artur Boruc will further bolster that department. Stevan Jovetic’s heart-breaking injury will definitely hurt Viola. But with Mutu’s ban ending in October, they will get back one of their talismanic players. Gilardino would look forward to replicating his form of last season.

Players to watch out for: Stevan Jovetic, Juan Vargas, Gaetano D’Agostino, Ricardo Montlivo

THT Prediction: 8th

___________________________________________

Lazio

Last season, President Claudio Lottito wonderfully exhibited how to spoil an otherwise decent squad. He froze out Cristian Ledesma and Goran Pandev, two of their best players, due to contract disagreements. Aquile’s Coppa Italia winning team disintegrated, as they hovered around relegation zone. The 12th place finish was just not good enough. The Biancocelesti have lost Aleksander Kolarov, their best player last season. In what looks to be a good deal, they acquired cash and Javier Garrido from Manchester City in return. Highly rated Brazilian Hernanes has been their major acquisition so far. Mark Bresciano, with over eleven years of Serie A experience, would add stability to an attacking line-up which is often prone to foolishness. Uruguayan Alvaro Gonzalez is an unspectacular but solid player to have in one’s squad.

Players to watch out for: Fernando Muslera, Hernanes, Mauro Zarate, Stefan Lichsteiner

THT Prediction: 10th

___________________________________________

Sampdoria

Blucerchiati made their way back into the Champions League after a long hiatus. The blistering form of Antonio Cassano and Pazzini upfront was their primary strength, while youngster Andrea Poli made headlines in the second half of the season with his consistent performances. Their play-maker and captain Angelo Palombo has been impressive for last two-three seasons. Ziegler and Gastaldello formed a stable defensive line that saw ‘Doria go unbeaten at home.

However, the transfer market has not been kind to Sampdoria. They lost a chunk of officials to Juventus; coach Luigi Del Neri, sporting director Giuseppe Marotta and chief scout Fabricio Patarici all left. Del Neri’s replacement, Dominic De Carlo, is experienced at the domestic level but not in European football. Their small squad might struggle to cope with the rigours of mid-week European games.

Players to watch out for: Andrea Poli, Giampaolo Pazzini, Antonio Cassano, Angelo Palombo

THT Prediction: 9th

___________________________________________

Genoa

Giam Piero Gasperini has transformed Italy’s oldest club into one of the most stylish teams in the peninsula. Ever since getting promoted in 2007, Genoa have played a scintillating brand of attacking football. Preferring a 3-4-3 with attacking wing-backs, they almost made it to Champions’ League in their second season after promotion. Last season, Grifoni’s inability to defend well was exposed in multiple occasions, as they finished a disappointing 9th.

In order to rectify their errors, Genoa has so far made commendable forays in the market. They have shored up their defence with the addition of Rafinha, Chico and Andrea Rannochia. Italy U-19 sensation Mattia Destro has been added to bolster the attack. He will join fellow new signings Luca Toni and Gergely Rudolf. Another master-stroke was to obtain the services of Portuguese ‘keeper Eduardo. The Braga ‘keeper has been brilliant for both club and country last season.

Players to watch out for: Andrea Rannochia, Eduardo, Giandomenico Mesto

THT Prediction: 4th

‘The Youth Policy’ is the new way at Milan now.@THT

Guys this is my latest article plz give it a read and let me know your feedback

‘The Youth Policy’ is the new way at Milan now.

Friday, August 27th, 2010 | Posted by Sachin Madaan
Now, football is certainly not like wine, here, players don’t really get better with age (barring few exceptional talents). It took few years coupled with shortage of funds but finally the Italian premier has come to its senses and has realized the importance of young blood in football.

So finally after two torturous domestic seasons, Mr. Berlusconi who seems to have been highly inspired by his love for youth off field; has decided to implement the same on the field as well. Now before all of you set your tongues wagging and your eye balls rolling let me clarify that we are not talking about his rumored escapades with girls half his age. Here we intend to focus on the preferences given by the Milan management to their Primavera squad over expensive outside players in order to add some young blood to their senior team during this pre season’s transfer window.

For twenty years (1985-2005) the Rossoneri were known as the flamboyant club in the transfer market. But since past few years the very same club under the same management has been acting miserly to say the least. The fact that Allegri, their new manager, is totally a miser when it comes to transfer money is a fact known to all. Now, their decision to graduate their players from youth sector was a forced one due to lack of funds but it has certainly been a blessing in disguise after going through the performances of their young colts in the pre-season matches. Although Milan managed to win just one out of the six pre-season matches, the talent displayed by their youth players was promising for the eyes of any Milanista.

Rodney Strasser, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Mitja Novinic, Alexander Merkel and Simone Verdi have all been tried by Allegri in the build up to the season and most of them have acted like a breath of fresh air for the ageing Milan squad. Unfortunately, not all of them will make the cut this time around but they have shown it to their management that they certainly possess the pedigree required to challenge their senior team-mates for a place in the main squad in the coming years.

Here, we briefly look at some of these young prodigies who if given a chance could prove to be more than a handful and could most certainly help Il Diavolo to reclaim its lost stature in Italian as well as European football.

Graduated Players

Rodney Strasser: Strasser, along with Oduamadi and Zigoni were a part of the Sokratis deal with Genoa. Milan gave away half of the rights of each of these players to Genoa but kept both Strasser and Oduamadi with them for the season. He plays as a midfielder and is one hell of a hard tackler. He often gets himself into really good positions during the game and is tipped by many to be the guy to look out for this season. Likely to start on bench, he is expected to be a back up for Gattuso but taking into consideration the last season’s performance of Rino, don’t be surprised if this youngster makes it to the starting eleven in the first half of the season itself. This African has a range from CM to DMF and has already been compared with the likes of Seedorf and Gattuso. He is a little reckless with his challenges though; so expect a busy referee in the matches when this guy steps on the field.

Nnamdi Oduamadi: He has been officially named in the senior team by Allegri as a back up for Pato for the season beginning this weekend. The Nigerian striker is co-owned by Milan and I Rossoblu, but would be staying at San Siro for this year. He was very effective in the game against Varese and was the lone shinning star in the defeat to the Serie B club. He plays as a striker but can play on the right wing as well and has the knack of providing fantastic assists while playing on the flanks. This kid seems to have good characteristics and could very well be a promising talent for the Rossoneri in the future. He has good speed and pace on the ball but needs to hone his ball controlling skills.

There and thereabouts

Alexander Merkel: Post South Africa, German youngsters have been the talk of the town and this German teenager although not a part of their national team yet; has certainly not let us down. Probably there is something in the water of Deutschland that make them tick like the way they do. This 18 year old has been highly praised for his performances against Lyon and Arsenal in the recently concluded Emirates Cup. Although he was a little too advanced for a trequartista, he looked like an intelligent player with fabulous ball control with both his feet. His speed has added a new dimension to the weak creative department of the Lombardy club. He needs to work on his physique a bit more but his work ethic has been quite exceptional. Allegri surely has been encouraged by what he saw in this youngster and have asked Ronaldinho to be his mentor as Merkel was seen training with the pony tailed Brazilian in all their practice sessions. He has not been named in the Milan squad for the current season but there are strong chances of him being featured in Coppa Italia or even in the senior team if there are any injury concerns.

Simone Verdi: He is arguably the most talked about and talented striker from Milan’s youth sector in recent times. The fact that he was promoted straight to Primavera from Allievi Nazionali and was made to skip Berretti (Under-20) speaks volumes about the skills he possesses in his repertoire. He too like Merkel was highly impressive during the Emirates Cup and often outplayed his senior teammate Marco Borriello. A knee injury suffered against Lyon kept him out of action for the remaining of the pre-season. There is a cloud over which Milan team he will be playing for in 2010-11 as he has neither been named in the senior squad nor in the Primavera squad. With great ball control, gazelle like speed and precise final touch, Verdi could be the answer to the 2nd striker problem which the red and blacks have been facing for quite some time now.

Still some time left to make the cut

Mitja Novinic: He is one of the most promising midfielders from Slovenia and a part of their under-19 national team. He was brought from Nafta Lendava, a Slovenian first division club in 2007. He has shown some decent creativity at the center of the park but his physique proves to be a big hindrance for him. Novinic was mostly used as a substitute in the friendlies and will be a part of the youth team for the upcoming season.

Special Mention

Marco Ezio Fossati: He is one of the three Inter Milan youth players who has been outrightly purchased by Milan during this transfer window and will be a part of the Primavera setup. He was featured in the UEFA’s list of top 10 youngsters to watch out for after last year’s U-17 world cup. His idol is Andrea Pirlo and if some Inter fans are to be believed he is considered a replica of the legendary dead ball specialist. His sale to Milan has not gone down well at all with their rivals as he is considered Italy’s most prolific young midfielder. He has been a life long Milan fan and was a part of the Rossoneri youth setup till he was 15 and then left for Inter when we were European Champions. And, now after Inter won a treble he signs back with the Rossoneri, he is an enigma already.

With funding issues surrounding the seven time European champions, this year was tipped to be the one when focus will be laid on graduating the Primavera kids with 10 million Euros kept exclusively for them. These kids have certainly lived up to the promise by giving Milan hope and have rejuvenated the squad. At the same time they have brought down the average age of the senior squad. But with all these pros they are bound to bring in loads of inexperience clubbed with a number of mistakes, but then again that is part and parcel of the youth and they are surely expected to improve with time.

I'm going to my first Milan derby this year and I hope to see Zla-Pa-Ro in action! The game is on 14th of November, Sunday so I was just curious what are the chances of the game being moved on Saturday eve instead?

Anyways I hope we kick some serious Merda ass!

Very doubtful. All of the Milan derbies i've seen have been on Sunday. Either afternoon or evening.

Very doubtful. All of the Milan derbies i've seen have been on Sunday. Either afternoon or evening.

Hmm last year's 0-4 was played on Saturday. I wanna book the tickets but I guess I will wait little bit longer...

Hmmm I can't remember but I know sometimes the derby has been played on Saturday too. I looked it up and there are no CL games prior to the derby so I guess it will be Sunday...

Schedule is fucking weird. But i like Saturday games, they give me something to do and then are early so no long waiting.
