Essentially it'll end up being a 4-4-1-1 with Adriano dropping deeper.

Adriano work best with Bacca as well. He opens up space for Bacca to exploit and tracks back a lot.

Yuck.

Also with Cerci in midfield the formation is going to end up being a 4-3-3 anyways but this time with two lightweight midfielders on the side (Bonaventura and Bertolacci).

Despite Mihajlovic's words, Milan could play with the 4-4-2 against Sampdoria. Mihajlovic tested a 4-4-2 with Niang and Bacca in attack and Cerci-Montolivo-Bertolacci-Bonaventura in midfield in training today. #Sky

It was obvious that since Berto is back that we were going to play 442. Going to be very interesting to see Berto/Monto in the middle. Niang will do great in a less fixed role as SS and Bacca will have more space now that the defenders will need to worry about another striker. Our FB won't need to push up and can stay back, this way we avoid counters. Only real threat is if our wide players push too hard and our 2 CM get overwhelmed by Samps 3 in the middle.

He should figured out long long time ago, that bacca works the best with adriano. And is his fault as well that didn't ask for a proper second striker, balo isn't.

This is happen, when u start the season with no plan. We started 4-3-1-2 without a playmaker, then we changed to 4-3-3 without a proper winger(we sold ses because of 4-3-1-2 btw) and now 4-4-2 without a proper second striker. What a joke.

Yeah I am pissed off, because we are fucking done before the winter break. 5 strikers that can't do jack shit!

4-3-1-2 has been chosen with the plan to play Menez as CAM behind Bacca and Luiz and Niang/Cerci/Balo as subs, which on paper isn't bad at all.

Menez was expected to return the latest when the new season begun, until then Jack/Honda/Suso should fill the role as CAMs (and all three were said before work the best as CAMs).

So in theory the gameplan was there and it isn't a bad gameplan per se imo. What happened afterwards was a long series of unlucky events: Menez first was said to be our just a little bit more, then it was said well maybe 1-2 months more (at a point were the season already begun) and then even the whole first half of the season. Meanwhile Balo and Niang got injured, so besides Cerci (wasn't he injured as well at the start?) no sub for two strikers which meant that we can't field Bacca and Luiz at the same time. Moreover it turned out that our players who were said to perform the best as CAMs (especially Honda and Suso) who actually performed well in pre-season turned out to perform piss-poor once the season started. No one could predict all those events at the very start of the season.

Maybe we should have switched before to 4-3-3, bit afterwards it's always easier to say what we should have done. At that point the reasons who led to the decision to play 4-3-1-2, to work a whole pre-season on 4-3-1-2 and to stick a while to it were there and were not bad decisions per se imo.
