Michael Cox' tribute to Van Bommel.

The death and subsequent re-emergence of the deep-lying passing midfielder has been a fascinating and deeply enjoyable development. AC Milan carried the torch throughout the mid-2000s by incorporating the wonderful Andrea Pirlo in their side -- "the exception," as Pep Guardiola termed him at the time -- as the rest of Europe concentrated on scrappers.

Guardiola had replaced Pirlo at Brescia, and later Guardiola's own Barcelona side took the theme further. Barca, of course, have now been superseded by the Bayern Munich side preparing to welcome Guardiola as their next coach, and the Germans are set to dominate the next few years in Europe. Javi Martinez's performance against Barcelona in Bayern's 4-0 first-leg victory showed how to blend physicality and technique wonderfully.

Peculiarly, Van Bommel played for all three -- Barca, Bayern and Milan. The Dutchman, however, never featured when those clubs were showcasing spectacular, era-defining football. He was instead the awkward alternative they reluctantly turned to during more desperate, cynical moments. He's the antithesis of proactive football.

I agree with several points, including the timing of teams signing Van Bommel (when they have no creative alternatives and need his grit).. But overall, he misses out on MvB's good points as well. And attributes teams going into a match in an aggressive mode (Portugal vs Netherlands) to just poor MvB.

Well done, Michael Cox. Proved he's a true Englishman. His opinion means zero to me from now on. Absolute moron.

Michael Cox is classless, the guy just retired and the first thing you try to do is shame him

It is difficult to be unbiased about Van Bommel. I thoroughly enjoyed his spell here at Milan, that I've completely ignored how I used to hate him at Barca and Bayern - him and Puyol were two of my most hated footballers.

He's that kinda player. You love him when he plays for your team, because deep inside, most of us are cynics.

Cox just released the English pundit on him

A bit more scope and he would praise the bravery of the lads

Wasn't up in English.

Bold parts:

It will be a difficult match for me.

I played for a year and a half in Milan, but it was as if I played there for 10 years. It was so beautiful to me. I cried a lot when I left.

It's really difficult for me to decide who to support.

Grande Mark!

"If I will support Milan or PSV? I hope that the best team wins. I played at Milan for a year and a half, but it feels like I played there for 10 years. It was really nice and that’s also why I cried when I left"

Loved him during his short stay here. I wanted him to reach 100 caps for us and maybe score at least one goal. It would have been nice if he did end up staying with us for a couple of years, and not be able to score a goal...and then during his last match, was given a chance to score a PK. That would have been a wonderful thing.

He was unfortunate with goals. Almost scored a couple of times, including a thunderous drive which hit the crossbar.

Still, undeniably WC in his stay here.

Boss van Bommel:

''PSV's squad changed a lot the past transfer period. There are many youngsters around now. But Milan has to be wary, they're not awareof the level PSV is performing at right now. It's not the same PSV I played in last season. But Milan is Milan, they always have a lot of quality.''

''PSV is a very young and quick team, with a young defensive line aswell. It will be a very interesting match, who knows what will happen.. Milan must keep an eye on Adem Maher, he's their best player who can score out of nothing and has a very high potential.''

@Ton_Peeters I think it is a pity that El Shaarawy isn't playing, usually he is one of the most offensive players! @acmilan @UEFAcom

Always cheering for Milan on twitter.

So much love for Van Bommel, maybe one day he could become a coach for us or be involved somehow.
