With Gooch gone and Papa out of favour, I see this as our backup CB signing.

Cheap , Serie A experienced.

Nesta/Silva/Yepes/Mexes/Bonera is as deep as u can get as far as CBs are concerned in any team and Mexes is as good a 3rd choice CB and sub for Silva as u can get.

Luiz/Sakho etc will be good, but doubt any of em will be coming here to sit in the bench most of the time. And those are still young players who need more playing time to show progress. Else they will end up like another Bonera. I'd take one of em after Nesta is gone.

Mexes + a LB and defense is set I'd say ..

Mexes ?? lol, the same guy who sucked balls in the same match where Roma's defense was hailed as supreme ?? ( if you can't remember it was last match between Roma and Milan)

He always plays below average and yet people still write his name down on and on just because of some hype he got at some stage in his career. If you wanna go cheap, then go for someone that is at least decent.

He picks up his game recently though, he's good this year IMO unlike last seasons.

sakho? wasnt he like 8-10 million euros?

Mmmmmmmmmmmm Sakho :proud:

I think if the rumours of a deal for Lazzari with Astori's card being part of the deal are true, its looking like Mexes could well happen. management dont seam to have that much faith in Papa, and Yepes should be 4th choice! So unless we can get Sakho, Mexes is very likely... He's a decent enough 3rd/4th choice CB, I'd rather him than Yepes.

If we got Mexes now and say Sakho in the Summer, we could let Gooch go and send Papa out on loan to develop. That would give us Nesta, Silva, Sakho, Mexes and Bonera as our CB roster, and Sakho and Mexes are guranteed games due to Nesta's age and the injuries he picks up... I'd even consider selling Bonera to be honest.
Nesta, Silva, Sakho, Mexes and Bonera? is way better than Nesta, Silva, Bonera, Papa, Gooch and Yepes, plus we could realistically get Mexes and Sakho for 10 - 12 million.

Its just an idea ;)

i think we should give papa a fair chance. if he doesn't deliver, we should get a (potential) WC player or spend our money elsewhere.

i'm not saying mexes is bad, i just don't think he's needed.

easy now... he's for sure no world beater every game, but he's not below average. As 3rd CB he would be perfect, he's a good stopper to play alongside Nesta or Silva.

Mexes > yepes, bonera and papa

We have to accept that Nesta will not give you more than 30 games a season (league + CL) and Mexes is such a perfect replacement as 1st sub. Plus he is cheap and according to his age should be entering peak of his career!

Mexes + Silva will still be the best CB partnership in Serie A.. you could argue Samuel + Lucio( not that anyone would on an obviously biased Milan forum :D)

Send Papa back to genoa or some other club on loan where he actually gets playing time to develop

Silva - Mexes will be way too much similar....
Mexes as a replacement for Silva is more like it.

This... If he's not going to get a game ahead of Bonera and Yepes its a waste of a talented young player. Send him on loan and see how he develops... If he's good enough, bring him back, if not, he'll have put himself in the shop window and found his level so we can sell him to a club that suits his skill level.

I'd still love to get someone like Sakho and the likes of Mexes... Nesta's a worry and alreayd this season we've had to do without him and Silva, Sakho rotating in with Nesta would be immense, and having Mexes if Silva goes out would still give us one of the best CB pairings in the league. You cant have too much quality, and I'd rather quality over quantity.

Nesta, Silva, Mexes and Sakho

Or

Nesta, Silva, Bonera, Papa and Gooch

I know what I'd rather

Well, its not realistic & nescecary to get both.
Nesta, Silva, Mexes/Sakho, Bonera , Yepes would do the trick.

True, no space for Papa.

Mexes is way way more similar to Nesta than he is to Silva in terms of playing style and everything.

Hoping for both Mexes and Sakho is just setting yourself up for dissapointment! :head:

Be happy with one.. personally at this point in time in the January market with a possible scudetto at stake.. and at the price.. i want Mexes! June onwards is a seperate issue after that

I take Mexes anyday over Papa.
Besides as far as I am concerned Papa is only loaned to Us. Please correct me if I am wrong but couple of posters said we should loan him out, one even said we own him because he isn't on co-owned players list.
Isn't that because he isn't our at all, just loanedmwith possibility to buy?

Nope, we bought him. We gave Genoa half of Strasser, Zigoni, and Odu and money for him. What a waste.

After recent games I'd rather he start over Bonera though, I mean if we could teach him a bit (he's still quite young) we could turn him into a solid backup.

I'd rather wait till the Summer then and get a younger, better player that can develop next term under Nesta, step in when needed and grow to become a World beater with Silva and defend our goals for the next 10 years... Not some Frenchman that can be good just now, is close to 30, but hey, he's free!

Yes Mexes is cheap and can help with the run in for the Scudetto, but he's no long term solution to our problem of replacing Nesta. He may do ok for a couple of years, but so will Ibra and Cass, but it still means we'll have to replace them with younger quality in 3/4 years. These sort of signings are great in the short term, but Milan have had no long term plan to rejuvinate the team for what, 6/7 years now?

Getting Mexes for a couple of Million in january, then Sakho for 10 million in the Summer shouldn't actually be setting myself up for dissapointment, we're AC Milan. If it was 12 million for Mexes then 12 million for Sakho, then yes, totally un-realistic! But we should be able and willing to pay maybe a total of 15 million on two defenders, one that can help secure the title, then one that is our preffered choice of long term solution to the Nesta problem. Then after next season we have Sakho and Silva as our 1st and 2nd CBs with Mexes as 3rd, and perhaps Papa as well if he's improved.

I don't really like Mexes and I'm certainly not his biggest fan, but I take him over Bonera anyday (we're that desperate). If Mexes was to come, I wouldn't mind at all. Bonera can be like fifth choice or something

I meant hoping for both in Jan is unrealistic. Ofcourse in the summer its a totally different matter altogether. You never know this might even be Nesta's last season(praying its not but you never know with such an injury prone guy)

But yeah we really really need Mexes right now.. could be the difference between 1st and 2nd imo.

nothing is guarenteed in life, the same in football just becouse a player is younger does not mean he will last longer.
kaka for example "only" gave us 4 good years before his body gave in.
rui costa gave us the same.
one player at the start of his career and one at the end.
if mexes gives us 4 good years I will be happy becouse there is no guarantee that sakho or luiz will give more.

28 aint old, but I dont want to be having to replace or upgrade players every bloody 3/4 years as players get slower and decline. The Milan I know has built a repuatation on players coming and staying for 5/6/7/8... 20 years, and signing 28/29 years olds just cos their cheap aint really the way I want us to go. Mexes complimented by a Sakho type signing helps us on two fronts, quality player for cheap, younger more expensive player that can develop and stay for longer.
Just getting Mexes cos he's cheap, then seeing Nesta decline even more next term or deciding to retire would leave us with Silva, Mexes, Bonera, Yepes as our CB choices
Mexes in January, fair enough, but we have to be a little bit more forward thinking in the Summer!
