How is that not a clear handball?

Normally VAR works well in Italy but that was bollocks.

I think the new handball rules are different, more oriented on intention. In this case, the distance was too small and no intention. Not sure though.

Form is temporary, grintics is permanent.

Looking forward to the distance covered stats.
Probably 3-4 km more than Juve.

Nice to see Napoli win against the scum, even though it doesnt benefit us. Lets hope Napoli continues their poor form after this game

Nah, I hope they improve and get EL, while we get CL. They're not our concern if we're aiming for CL

I miss European knockout games, even if it's EL.

Those Arsenal EL games evoked emotions that I hadn't felt since 2013.

3rd place isn't midtable.

If you make Top 4 twice, qualify for CL group stage and knock-out stage with a provincial club like Atalanta, which sell their most valuable assets every year, then you're certainly not an average midtable coach.

The disaster spell with Inter says more about Moratti's post-treble Inter than him.
He has never coached Scudetto-candidates.

Mid table is more quality thing than a position thing for me.

Juve and Inter top table teams.

Napoli Lazio Roma Atalanta mid table teams.

Then 14 relegation candidates/bottom table teams.

So amongst the 4 he's a middling manager. His fluke round of 16 qualification aside.

Mid table quality teams finishing near the top is nothing new. We saw this with giudolin - udinese, and delneri - samp. UCL had a better format back then and they were summarily dumped out in group stage qualifiers.

Delneri made the move upwards to a bigger club after that and faced the same fate as gasperini.

Delneri had one lucky season with Cassano and Pazzini. He has failed almost everywhere he's been.

Guidolin is a more worthy comparison. He had consistent success with Udinese in a similar fashion as Gasperini. Wasn't given a shot at a top club. He seemed a bit too "nice" for big clubs and big egos though, but that's just an assumption.

Gasp is a cunt. He might lack a few things, but not toughness.
Genoa and Atalanta are the only Serie A clubs that gave him a full season and he has been very successful with both, in a very similar manner, showing it's not a fluke and it's more on him than the club.
The other two clubs are Zamparini's Palermo and Moratti's post-treble Inter.
All your conjectures are based on.......the short stint at Moratti's post-treble Inter, with a proudly unprofessional Sneijder, a drunk Maicon and a bunch of complacent, old Argentinians?
They had only one star still delivering for them(Eto'o) and that's the one they decided to get rid of to "prepare" for Gasperini.

Klopp, Poch, Conte, any demanding coach would've failed with that bunch.
Gasp, and the above mentioned coaches, need players that can and are willing to work hard.
He inherited a squad that was too old, too satisfied and too proud for such tactics. He arrived in the worst possible moment. It was doomed to fail from start.
Inter have come a long way since then. They now have one of the hardest working, most fit squads in club football.

I'm not ruling out Gasp being only fit for provincial clubs, but having such strong convictions based on the Inter stint is down-right ridiculous.

lol at napoli being a provincial club. they nearly knocked liverpool out of the group stages in 2018. they also kicked their ass this year rofl in the group stages.

napoli is a top elite club regardless of their performances in serie a this season which is a anamoly.

Yes, you can make the argument too much is being taken out of his inter stint. But whether the fault is with the coach or with the players and upper management becomes more evident based on who takes over and how they perform with the same crowd. Inter finished a poultry 6th that season but under gasperini they were in relegation form losing to teams like trabzonspor and unable to deal with personalities. Ranieri was a marked improvement.

With Genoa, I agree he over performed in probably the most technically deficient seasons of Italian football in history. With Atalanta he is performing about where they should be: consistent 5th-7th, but one of Roma , lazio, Napoli performs badly each season and pushes him above where he belongs.

Either way, too much hype for a middling. Let's see if he's able to venture out his backwater blanket to a big club again and sort things out.

It's not implausible. I disliked sarri but his work at a disfunctional club like Chelsea is simply and objectively phenomenal.

What even if this argument. Even in Europe Atlanta has been nothing but impressive.

Couple seasons back, did very well in Europa League, beat the shit out of Everton 5-0 and embarrassed them, only lost a heartbreaker to a Dortmund side with Aubamayeng, team that spends most of its years in the Champions league, not the second rate Europa league.

This season, yes they started awful, most teams that are just stepping foot in the CL do talent or not(it’s a different game and different way of playing altogether.) Made adjustments accordingly, which is literally what good coaches are paid to do, and at the same time managed to keep the team believing in itself despite 3 losses in a row. Only team to ever qualify under those circumstances, now poised in a very winnable game against Valencia.

Many teams over the years have randomly popped up and had a miracle season, only to have their squad get taken apart in the market or just fall back to where they realistically should be. Wolfsburg, Newcastle way back almost made 4th with Cisse and Ba, Lille and Montpellier years ago in France, maybe Getafe now. They all fall back down to earth. Gasperini is impervious to that, doing the same with different clubs as Goodfella mentioned. Up until this season when Atalanta opted to keep their key players, he has lost key performers multiple seasons and recovered or even improved every time. This shouldn’t be an argument and tbh it isn’t one

Inter needed a re-haul. Hiring a tactically ambitious coach like Gasperini made no sense while they still had all the washed up treble players.

Ranieri had a low risk low reward approach that more or less settled for mediocrity. I don't know if you remember, but he was also fired before the end of that season. They finished the season with Stramaccioni.

I don't think he'll leave Atalanta, as things stand. He's 62. It's a far more stable club than anywhere else he has been to. He has become an honorary citizen of Bergamo. He's getting an almost Ferguson-level status at Atalanta.
He's getting recognition all over the world. I think he's content with being where here is.
