Milan Are Keeping Tabs On Porto's Fernando - Sporting Director Ariedo Braida
Milan's Ariedo Braida has confirmed that the Rossoneri are after Porto midfielder Fernando.

Holding midfielder Fernando could be on his way out of Portuguese table toppers Porto at the end of the season, as Italian giants Milan have expressed an interest in signing the Brazilian.

The Rossoneri are in the market for a new central player to replace the ageing Gennaro Gattuso in the long term, and Milan supposedly see the 23-year-old as a good candidate to strengthen that position.

"We know Fernando very well, but I don't want to say too much about him as this is not the right time to discuss our transfer policy. He's a definitely a player we're closely monitoring though," said sporting director Ariedo Braida to Record.

The former Brazil under-20 star started his professional career with Villa Nova and joined Porto in the summer of 2007. He was farmed out on loan to Estrela Amadora in his first season, but has developed into an important first team member since his return to the Dragoes.

Fernando won't be available on the cheap as his current contract with Porto runs until the summer of 2014.

More commonly known as just Fernando, he is a quality defensive midfielder and is still only 23. Would be a good addition to our squad.

Could be a good pickup to take over for either gattuso or ambro. In the DM department..young and seems to be a talented player..

He looked really good in the youtube highlight. I wonder who he possibly would replace though. Our squad is way too large 32 players. MVB?

Admittedly I've only seen the one Youtube video but if this guy is anywhere near as immense and consistent as he appears... then we really need to go after him. I'd kill for someone in the midfield who can make tackles like that. Flamini tries but with his reputation he seems to get pulled up a lot for it (and a lot of the time rightfully so).

Does anyone here regularly watch Porto? Is he really as good as it seems or is it just Youtube making him look this good?

He looks like a very Flamini style player, considering like Flamini he goes diving into tackles. But the reason why he is SO MUCH better than Flamini is because of the timing of his tackles, which are near perfect and almost ends up with him having the ball. Plus it doesnt hurt that that he has amazing technical ability...

He kinda reminds me of a younger Gattuso with those tackles.....

He looks to be a very strong tackler and has a fair amount of pace, he's dribbling also seems to be of a higher standard then our current DMs. I think it's safe to assume he would be stronger in attack as well considering he's brazillian

I will have to watch some more Porto games to get a better picture.

No.

He is actually better than these vids. I am more impressed by how consistent he is throughout the game and does not have his concentration drop for parts of the game (like Pato, who is only concentrated for a maximum of 30 minutes every month during game time). If the guy is in good form, he is totally dominant and is every where on the pitch.

When Silva played as DM, his defense reminded me of Fernando Reges, he was so fast to close down players and was literally like a third CB infront of the back two. However, Fernando offers a great deal going forward too... he may not be as creative as Pirlo or Fabregas, but he has speed and stamina that neither of the two have.

Yeah, I noticed in the compilation posted in this thread that his speed was very good.

If he's as consistent as you say then we really need to sign this guy. He's the perfect replacement for Rino and even offers something going forward, like you say. I'd have no problem with Milan selling Flamini to make space (and money) for this guy.

Alot of people say he's a replacement for Gattuso, but I see him more of a Van Bommel player. Gattuso's replacement is already here, Strasser. Another player that resembles Reges is Lassana Diara (remember that game vs Milan last year where Lass was everywhere? Reges has a similar style to Lassana in that game).

I disagree on the Lassana-Fernando comparison. I actually think Lass is the closest fit to Gattuso out there at the moment, in that they are both superb athletes who aren't really great at reading the game, but make up for that with their athleticism. Fernando is more like Ambro, in that he is a great reader of the game and slide tackles very well. The great thing about Fernando as well is he is also a superb athlete. This guy would give us security ahead of the backline for years, and looking at his skillset it seems like he would be able to play centerback if necessary.

amazing player for a team like AC Milan that leave little defence vs compact teams, this guy could kill counters like a walk in the park.

He looks like a Bommel/Flamini mix, but with more speed and attacking threat. If we had him I'd play him just behind the other midfielder in front of the defence.

Maybe I am dreaming a lot but if we got this guy this summer, and on of Sahin and Ganso + a leftback I seriously think we can mount a serious challenge on the thing Merda did not do last year :) six trophies :D
