peeerlo, i dont personally hate this dude but i never liked him even in his prime. I always felt more affection towards kaka, seedorf and gattuso. I just dont like wimpish players unless ofcourse they are excessively talented. Pirlo obviously was always talented but he was too slow for my liking and not aggressive enough.

Pirlo's one of my favourite players of all time. I don't remember this guy ever saying he was a Milanista through and through or anything like that. Brescia was his club, no matter where he played. I can appreciate his contributions, but I can understand why people are mad he went to Juve, but I'm sure these same people weren't complaining when he left Inter for us.

I can clearly see your view point, but as you mentioned we look at it completely differently.

I did see a decline is his style of play and as you mention peole around him "lost" quality and got older but what I want to emphasize is that so did Pirlo.

The argument that people around him wasn't mobile is valid to make for a player which is mobile himself. To be honest now, Pirlo made Seedorf look mobile.

Anyhow he needed a personal trigger in order to rise his level and he got one as he felt he was unwanted. He was given the alternative to adapt and he refused on it, changing to one of our biggest rivals and stepping up a notch.

Everyone is entitled to their own opionion, but I really have a hard time understanding how some of you "higher layer" football supporters (most of you actually know your stuff) glorify Pirlo as a milanista beyond this world and that he is a victime and missunderstood.

You do know that Pirlo on average covers more ground then 99% of his team right?

he does it in sneaky ways. But he's always moving.

i hate when people say xavi moves so much more. Xavi pushes forward a little more, but not THAT much more.... both are always moving between defenders and available for pass, and never stay still.

You can't get as much posession as either do without constantly moving.

His job was never to make a driving run forward. And even these days when you see him go forward, it's same way he did w/ milan... sneaking up into space... he's never gonna out pace anyone

i've always liked him and players like him. They are rare and bring a new dimension to the team.

Pirlo on Ballon d’Or, future and his beard
By Football Italia staff

Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo has spoken to ********** about a variety of subjects – including the Golden Ball, his contract situation, his heir and his beard.

Pirlo was a contender to win the 2012 Ballon d’Or after his stunning year for club and country, but he didn’t make the final three-man shortlist.

“It’s right that they give the Golden Ball to players who score 80 goals a season, like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, or Iniesta. I’ll just settle for a placing.”

Pirlo joined the Old Lady in the summer of 2011 after his contract at Milan expired, but how long will he remain in Turin?

“I’m in no rush to negotiate a renewal,” he said. “I’ll just dedicate myself to what I enjoy – training and playing.

“Let’s see how things are when my contract has expired. I still have a year and a half left on my agreement.”

Pirlo got his Bianconeri career off to a winning start as they instantly won the Scudetto, but the cloud of suspicion which hangs over his club annoys him.

“I admit that it is difficult to deal with the controversies.

“After Calciopoli, everyone thinks that there is something else behind our successes. In reality, we know that our victories are down to sacrifice and application. But it hurts to hear certain discussions.

“The Juve jersey? I’d prefer a third star on the shirt rather than the 30 sul campo sentence.”

Pirlo had his struggles at the start of this campaign, but the man who is always paid close attention insists he’s now in great shape.

“I needed to train hard at the start of the season, but now I am ready to face game after game,” he continued.

“The opposition? I’ve been man-marked for 10 years and I’m not even a Trequartista…”

Juve’s season has also been complicated by the touchline ban handed to boss Antonio Conte, even if he’ll be back on December 9.

“We miss Conte a lot, especially at half-time. He has the right words for everyone, he can change the outcome of a game with his tactical adjustments.”

Pirlo was also asked for his opinion on Italy and Paris Saint-Germain youngster Marco Verratti, as well as young Juve teammate Paul Pogba.

“Verratti has similar characteristics to me and he’s really good, but give him time to grow and make mistakes in peace. I consider him to be the continuation of myself.

“Pogba is hard, physically strong and good at getting into scoring situations. He reminds me of Patrick Vieira, but he is still young and he knows that he must improve.”

The 33-year-old was also asked what his beard was all about. “It wasn’t bothering me in the summer so I let it grow. Now I don’t waste time shaving…”

Pirlo and penalties...

Andrea Pirlo is on first name terms with the ball but, as Antonio Labbate explains, they don’t always get on with each other from the penalty spot.

pirlo-applaud490ai.jpg

For someone who can seemingly thread a ball through the eye of a needle, at a distance of 80 yards in torrential rain while wearing his slippers, Andrea Pirlo has the tendency to apparently become a somewhat average player from the penalty spot.

That’s right, Andrea Pirlo. The same magician who just a matter of months ago embarrassed Joe Hart at Euro 2012 with one of the most audacious and ice cool penalties the world game has ever seen. While that is an example of what the playmaker can do with spot-kicks, it is by no means the norm.

This, of course, is not news to followers of Serie A. Pirlo has regularly been denied down the years and his shocking effort in last week’s 3-0 win over Torino was just the latest example of his kryptonite. That Marcelo Salas-like derby miss was his eighth from 22 in the Italian top flight – giving him a current conversion figure of 64 per cent.

That success rate has been on the slide since his arrival in Turin. Despite undoubtedly being the side’s most technically gifted player, Pirlo has missed all three of his efforts while wearing the black and white shirt. What makes those human errors even more surprising is that he failed to hit the target with two of those. He admittedly slotted home the rebound against Roma, but he hit the post at Cesena and the Toro miscue didn’t even get close to troubling the woodwork.

Another eyebrow-raising fact is that if you list the 116 players to have taken a penalty for Juventus, in terms of their conversion rate, then Pirlo would be rock bottom. Fifteen other players have also failed every time with their spot kicks in the club’s history, but 13 of them had taken just one penalty and only Virginio Rosetta and Guglielmo Gabetto had failed to score with a total of two.

The numbers thus make it clear that there is a potential flaw to Pirlo’s game, but it is not enough to redefine him as a player. After all, Riverino is not the first ultra-talented footballer to struggle from 12 yards out. Giancarlo Antognoni was hardly prolific given that he missed seven of his 25 League pens, while Gabriel Batistuta only rippled the net in 14 of his 24. At Juve, Zinedine Zidane, Paolo Rossi and Gianluca Vialli only recorded 50 per cent successes.

Pinpointing exactly why Pirlo seems to have developed this defect is complex. He generally places his penalties, which could potentially give goalkeepers more of a chance, but Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Del Piero commonly didn’t blast and they scored 82 per cent of their spot-kicks. It surely can’t be a mental issue either, as you don’t delicately chip in a European Championship quarter-final shoot-out if you don’t fancy yourself to score. You also have to throw in the factor of whether the ‘keeper is fortunate enough to dive in the right direction.

Whatever the reasons, there are players who just seem to be more suited to stepping up to the plate than others. Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed just two of his 26 Serie A pens, while Diego Milito has been denied three times in 25. Former Lazio and Milan right-back Massimo Oddo, who was considered a specialist in the field, ended his career with identical figures to the Argentine.

After Pirlo’s miss against Roma last season, boss Antonio Conte confirmed Pirlo as the club’s penalty taker in the on-field absence of Alessandro Del Piero. But something has changed this term with the promotion of Arturo Vidal, who has put away three of his four. Mirko Vucinic then netted in the 3-1 win at Genoa. And, on Saturday, with Vidal rested, there was a discussion between Vucinic, Claudio Marchisio and Pirlo before the latter took responsibility.

You’ve got to give Pirlo credit for that, but it was hardly a surprise. And it wouldn’t be totally out of character if he asked for the ball again when Juventus are next awarded a free shot. Some fans may shudder at the thought, but you don’t take the risks that the former Milan man does on the field of play if you’re scared of failure. Anyone can miss a penalty, but hardly anyone can play like Pirlo.
