Winds of winter is #1 because so many things happened in one episode:
- cersei using wildfire
- tommen committing suicide out of nowhere
- Daenerys naming tyrion hand of the queen
- Dany finally on her way to westeros
- arya killing walder frey
- Last but not least, the series biggest theory confirmed. R+L = J
Battle of bastards is second because:
- Battle of mereen, I mean come on that scene was epic
- and the battle itself (battle of bastards) was intense and of highest quality in terms of... well everything.
- Ramsey dies
The episode won 7 Emmy awards, which is a record

- Bran telling little finger that he knows things "chaos is a ladder"
- Arya and bran/sansa
- The last 10 mins of the episode was imo the best scene in the entire series. Imo without those 10mins it would have been okay.

for me this was the best battle scene in the show (to date)
I did not understand the significance of this...we even rewound the scene and watched it again, but nothing clicked in terms of what this meant
edited to add...I thought bran said "letter"...but it still didn't make sense to me what was meant
this was a close second for me...it was amazing!!
but at this point now, I am seriously questioning tyrion's involvement in their military endeavors (i.e. failures) thus far
