Yes good luck to Staam, he did a good job with Milan and was unfortunate not to win a trophy with us

Thank you for the majestic performances. You'll always be remembered with the effort you put into this team and especially what you did in Derbys.

the 04/05 main team.
Jaap is one of my fav. players. Oh well good luck.

Rui left, Jaap left, and now if Sheva leaves, it'll really kill me.

Where to start? The man was busted for using nandro at one time. Wonder who his dietician was at that time?

Otherwise, a very unlike-Dutch player in the fact that he was a defensive stalwart who has been a part of many different successful/trophy-winning sides. Being from a country that is known for producing world-class attacking talent, and being the inverse of that ilk is impressive. He has enjoyed a very good club football career.

His header vs. Inter was simply exhilierating in that one derby!

Jaap Stam retires!

Jaap Stam Retires

In a shock move, Ajax captain and renowned defender Jaap Stam has retired from football at the age of 35...

zoom - galleria Hours after missing Ajax's trip to FC Utrecht for personal reasons, it has transpired that Jaap Stam has played his last game of professional football.

The 35 year old defender is set to call it quits after a career that's seen him represent the likes of AC Milan and Manchester United.

Dutch daily De Telegraaf claims that Ajax technical director Martin van Geel will hold a press conference today at 13:15 local time in which he will announce Stam's decision to leave the beautiful game.

Stam, who played 67 times for the Dutch national team, broke through to the senior game with FC Zwolle in the 1992/93 season.

From there, he moved to Cambuur Leeuwarden and then Willem II Tilburg before making a high-profile switch to PSV Eindhoven.

It was at the Philipps Stadion where he really made his name and, with a host of top clubs looking for his signature, he eventually transferred to legendary English side Manchester United in 1998.

He spent three years at Old Trafford, lifting both the Premiership and Champions League trophies with the Red Devils, before moving on yet again, this time to SS Lazio.

While he continued to win plaudits for his no-nonsense central defensive performances, the controversial Dutchman underwent a four month ban after an anti-doping committee found traces of the banned substance nandrolone in his system.

Nonetheless, after serving out his punishment, he went to AC Milan after Euro 2004, spending 18 months with the rossoneri before taking up the offer of the captaincy at Ajax.

And now, it seems that this chapter in his career is over, too, with no new ones left to come.

One of the rare players who never won anything with us. Except for the Supercup victory in '04 where Sheva scored a hattrick against Lazio. ;)

Sad to see him go without being able to inspire Ajax to former glory. He will be missed. One of my favourite defenders.

A real rock. Farewell, mate, and have a great after-life :D

Merged.

Perpetrator of the best header I've probably ever seen, against Merda in '05. He had helium in his socks that night. Grande Stam and thanks for the memories.

A great defender, the type of guy you don't want to see in a dark alley, weather drugs were or weren't involved, he was a great defender. Of course, the best memory as a Milan player was that perfect header against Inter.

Good luck in whatever his next life proyect is!
