Renault uncovered, Ferrari named

Renault's 2004 challenger, the R24, made its track debut at Barcelona on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, Ferrari's Sporting Director Jean Todt revealed that the world champions' new car, which will be launched in Maranello next Monday, is, internally at least, called the 655.

Renault will officially unveil the R24 in Sicily on January 29. However, Jarno Trulli gave the public its first glimpse of the new car, which features an unusual looking engine cover, when he took to the Circuit de Catalunya.

Ferrari have also promised something unexpected when the wraps come off their new car next week. After the excitement generated by the radical nose design of the Williams FW26, Todt said the Italian team's 2004 car also has 'a front wing that could surprise everyone'. Todt referred to the car as the 655, but it remains to seen if that will be its official title. (formula1.com)

From F2003-GA turned out to be F655 this season...I'm still looking forward what does it mean and why does being called F655 which far away from of what crossed in mind before, F2004?...

Finally they change the date of GP Brazil... Sao Paulo usually have storms in the time of the year that it used to happen, what caused a lot of accidentes in Interlagos Ring in the last years.

Ferrari unveil the F2004 in Maranello

Ferrari have officially launched the car they hope will bring them a sixth consecutive constructors' championship this season. The covers came off the F2004 on Monday morning at the team's headquarters in Maranello, Italy.

The new machine is a further evolution of last year's F2003-GA, though every part of the car has been redesigned in a bid to make optimum use of the new Ferrari 053 V10 engine and Bridgestone's latest tyres.

Technical Director Ross Brawn described the car as the best Ferrari they had yet produced, adding that the team had learnt many lessons from last year.

"Our analysis of the 2003 season has highlighted the areas where we were strong and those where we were weak," he said. "Certainly, we did not react aggressively enough to the opportunities presented by the 2003 regulation changes and for 2004, we have worked to ensure that we will not make the same mistake."

The F2004 is lighter than its predecessor, with a lower centre of gravity and improved aerodynamics. Revised front and rear suspension should endow the car with improved handling, as well as allowing it to make more efficient use of its Bridgestone rubber.

The 053 engine and its seven-speed titanium gearbox retain the same layout as in the F2003-GA, but are of an all-new design, using new materials to make the package lighter and smaller.

The new Ferrari has already passed its major FIA crash tests and is expected to make its testing debut later this week at Fiorano with Michael Schumacher at the wheel. The team's test programme will then continue throughout February at Fiorano, Mugello and Imola.

------------------------------

Finally they came off as F2004.....

'Evolution' is always the key word of Ferrari's cars development, unlike other teams had been producing the cars with sort of 'Revolution'...

Renault officially unveil R24 in Sicily

The Renault team launched their 2004 challenger, the R24, on Thursday in front of 650 assembled media and guests at the prestigious opera house, Teatro Massimo, in Palermo, Sicily. The team, who finished fourth in the 2003 constructors' championship, said their objective for the upcoming season will be to improve on last year's successful performance.

"We must look to dislodge at least one of the teams above us in the championship," announced Renault Chairman and CEO Patrick Faure. "One can no longer just talk about the top three teams: last year, we became part of the Big Four. Renault's targets for this year are, logically, placed higher, and in order to achieve them, absolute reliability will be critical. The correct steps were taken last year in order to ensure this, and we are confident we will attain this target from Melbourne onwards."

Again spearheading the team's challenge will be Fernando Alonso, who won last year's Hungarian Grand Prix, and Jarno Trulli. They will be aided by test driver Franck Montagny, who will be an integral part of the team's season-long development programme, the Frenchman having already completed over 5000 km during the winter.

"I enter this new season feeling confident," commented the team's Managing Director Flavio Briatore. "Everything is in place, both at Enstone and at Viry-Chatillon, for us to have a fast and reliable car. As a team, I certainly don't think we have yet attained our maximum."

The R24, which has already made its track debut, has been conceived by a team led by Chief Designer Mark Smith, under the guidance of Technical Director Bob Bell. The car, which has been under development since September 2002, is an evolution of the R23, with the clear objective of improved performance in every area. In spite of regulation changes, the car already generates more downforce than its predecessor.

At the heart of the new car lies the RS24, an engine designed to meet the new one engine-per-weekend regulations. The objective of Project Leader Leon Taillieu has been to maintain the level of performance from 2003 while meeting the new reliability demands. Furthermore, it will undergo intensive development throughout the year under the leadership of Technical Director Rob White.

This team were really improving last year and could *steal attention* of the public after top three teams. I believe the last year' success could be continuing once again for Renault in 2004...

Jordan finally confirmed that Nick Heidfeld will head their driver line-up for the 2004 season, though the identity of his team-mate remains unknown...

He's one of promising young star I think...if he given more times to manage his ability, and got the suitable car for him..I'm sure he could more make points... :)

look at Heinz Harald Frentzen, who drived for Williams, if Heidfeld had that opportunity he would fight for Championship too.... hes fast, good driver, too young to get kicked out of Formula 1, great potential, even though he had problems to find a cockpit for coming season...... finally got a job with Jordan, who can be his teammate??? maybe a rookie/newbie or older veteran or even a driver who was bought into Formula 1 from sponsors...... Eddie Jordan should make his decision soon about the second driver........
Great car the new Renault, they had almost a Championship car last year, it was more a Powercar, acceleration, & not based on Highspeed......

BAR aiming for top three as 006 launches

The BAR team believe they can provide a credible challenge to the top three teams with their all-new 006 car, launched today (Sunday) at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya. Team Principal David Richards predicted the new machine would see the Honda-powered squad fighting for regular podium places in 2004.

Last year's 005 enabled the team to move up from eighth to fifth place in the constructors’ championship, and according to BAR, the 006 is a significant evolution of that machine, having been designed with a more challenging and innovative approach.

The new chassis is stiffer and has a lower centre of gravity. It also features a smaller fuel capacity to reflect the revised qualifying rules and raised pit lane speeds. The biggest single development is the new gearbox. It features a full carbon-composite maincase, together with narrow, lightweight gear ratios which afford a very substantial weight reduction at the rear of the car. There are further weight-saving features throughout, with greater use of MMC (metal matrix composite), innovative upright design, simplified internal suspension components, and a refined and better integrated hydraulics system.

The new engine and chassis allow a slightly shorter wheelbase, and the aerodynamic package has been optimised. BAR has used the results of track testing last year to identify a new strategy for aerodynamic development, and the new car has been developed in the wind tunnel using these new techniques. Although the change of aerodynamic regulations has slowed down the pace of improvement, the new car shows clear performance advantages in the tunnel over its predecessor.

Honda has produced a new engine to meet the challenge of the single-engine rule introduced for the first time this season. Although similar in concept to the 2003 unit, it too is a completely revised design, with much smaller dimensions, reduced weight and a lower centre of gravity.

For 2004, BAR has also forged a new partnership with French tyre supplier Michelin, after switching from Bridgestone. The team has conducted an extensive programme of tyre development during winter testing in readiness for their debut season together, using nearly 1,000 tyres during 10,000 kilometres of testing.

Getting their first taste of the 006 on Sunday were new team mates Jenson Button and Takuma Sato - one of the youngest driver pairings on the 2004 grid. Despite having only recently turned 24 years of age, Button is entering his fifth season in Formula One in the role of BAR's team leader. Following Sato’s excellent, if somewhat impromptu, race debut for the team in Japan at the end of last year, he will be starting his second full season of racing in Formula One.

Of the 006 Button commented: “The car is a major step forward and I feel very confident that the team isn't overstating its expectations for this year when we say we can fight with the top three teams. I think Taku and I will work very well together and hopefully we can look forward to the same kind of results we achieved in Japan. I think this year will definitely bring us podium finishes and, who knows, perhaps my first win as well."

BAR will get their first chance to gauge the 006 against its competition this week when they will be one of several teams testing at Barcelona.

Nice to hear they're aiming top three teams as Renault does. Just showing the new era B.A.R to public and both Renault and this team could challenge each other to make credible most improved team this year...

last years BAR-Honda was only garbage, not ready for competition even for the top 5 teams.... the story with Jacques Villeneuve was funny... already during the season the canadian ex-champ, troublemaker, u can see that his pit stop crew wasnt happy at all with him & his performances... how the crew worked during his pitstops was like provocation, slow and they didnt give a fuck about Villeneuve... the pitcrew seems really angry with him and made a lot of stupid faults what makes him to stay longer in the box as he wanted or needed.... there was a icecold harmony between Villeneuve and his crew..... and then at the end of the season Villneuve had his nose full, ive read that the manager of BAR offered him a provocating 1 dollar contra for the next season which he refused angry!!!! turning from a world champion to a complete idiot...

I think i can't enjoy the race for this season again...

It's so unfair about the points... someone who never win a race could be the next world champions... how interesting is that??

The old points is :
10
6
4
3
2
1

The new one :
10
8
6
5
4
3
2
1

Now.. i like to watch motogp a lot than F1 :o

The new regulation on point system which had officialy used last year is to minimize the gap between top and 'average' drivers. It gives them more competition between outer rivals even inside (team-mate *rival*) which could assist how far the cars progress are in each race. Obviously role of drivers' ability is the main factor on it.

The most important thing to face this season is how to make reliability cars due to new regulation of 'one engine per weekend' which it gives a lot pressure to engines. Who can make it, the points will be come easy to get. ;)

for the smaller teams, without any title-hopes, is the point-system a good thing, even for the 8th place they will get 1 point, and every point is money, off course its more exciting for the competition, like it was last season

Shanghai circuit nearing completion

The Shanghai International Circuit - the first track in China to be included on the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar - is nearing completion and organisers of the inaugural Grand Prix of China say all key installations should be in place by the end of March.

The first Chinese Grand Prix, which is scheduled for September 26, 2004, will be the 16th of this season's 18 races and will mark the fulfilment of a project that began at the end of 2002, when initial preparation of the site began. Extensive underpinning commenced that September, to counter the soft local terrain, and the official groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 17. Since then, the workforce - 3,000 people per day, on average - has operated round-the-clock in rotational shifts to make sure the circuit will be ready to take its place in motorsport's history books.

The distinctive circuit, which in sheer size will overshadow every other circuit in the world championship, incorporates 14 wide-ranging corners - an equal blend of left and right-handers that combine to form a 5.45-kilometre (3.39-mile) lap. Viewed from overhead, the circuit's shape is resembles the Chinese symbol "Shang", which translates as "high" or "above". According to computer simulations, current-generation Formula One cars will lap the track in about 1m 34s at an average speed close to 205 km/h (127.4 mph). On the longest, 1175-metre straight, which links Turns 13 and 14, cars should reach a maximum speed of 327 km/h (203mph).

There will be room for 200,000 spectators - and those in the massive 29,500-seat grandstand opposite the pits will enjoy a "wide screen" view that allows them to see 80 per cent of the racetrack. This grandstand is unique in the world of Formula One in having two "wing-like" structures that link the spectator seating to the pit complex and house both a media centre and the circuit's hospitality suites.

The circuit's design and layout should provide the drivers with that crucial ingredient - overtaking opportunities - and those that have seen the circuit are convinced that the new Shanghai International Circuit will provide spectators and television viewers alike with a great spectacle and a great race.

--------------------------------

Congrats on your new circuit, Shanghai. All I know it's faster a bit than Bahrain's.

Jordan has finally confirmed on Friday that German driver Nick Heidfeld will partner Italian Giorgio Pantano for the team in 2004 and has been testing with the team at Jerez this week. The announcement ends the long-running speculation over who would fill the new season's last remaining seat.

I can't wait for seeing another youngstars' action on track... :)

News: F2004 becomes *devil* at the moment, devouring Imola track of 98 laps and shattering unofficial lap record in Day Two where he made the quickest of those was a 1m 19.664s, improving on his own lap record, set last year in an F2003-GA, by almost a second. The closest anyone else could get was a 1m 20.906, set by David Coulthard in the McLaren MP4-19. And JPM going third fastest a total of 73 laps.

Seems Schumi is now ready for the race...

I think Ferrari made a mistake in not signing JPM, he is way better than Rubens and Ferrari would have a garuanteed Constructors championship if it were to happen.

Besides Shumacher wont be around forever. Mclaren will lag in 3rd this season i think.

What mistake??I didn't see any mistakes had done by Ferrari not signing JPM.. If you think JPM's existence in Ferrari would guarantee of grabbing constructors' title, you must be joking..you know JPM, he is unplease to be second driver and his main goal certainly to take driver's title for few last years within Schumi' authority. JPM is a temper guy + self-uncontrol even his style of driving has opened public eyes that he potentially becomes world champon in years to come. If you flashback what happened during France GP, he lost his temper to Williams management, and that's why his attitude 'unforgiven' to create *calm* status within the team. And don't forget he wanted worthy wages that he couldn't get with Williams..

All I know Schumi could keen stay forever in Ferrari, though he would race along what he wants until 80 years of age...(Ferrari's President Luca di Montezemolo has stated it to media..)..but the decision certainly in the hand of Schumi when he retires...

JPM will be headed to McLaren next year duo with Finnish Kimi Raikkonen, who will become priority? What a dilemma..

NEWS:

Ferrari dominant on Day One

Schumacher unbeatable in practice

In the second of Friday's two practice sessions Michael Schumacher did 15 laps and again set the fastest time in 1m 24,718s, leaving some rivals open-mouthed.

However, the big wobble the world champion had at the end of his fastest lap - he ran wide in the final corner and the Ferrari momentarily became completely airborne - was testament to just how hard he was trying. It was, some said, a deliberate attempt to out-psyche the opposition, but it was nonetheless impressive as team mate Rubens Barrichello backed things up with second fastest time of 1m 24.826s.

"Even if we drained all the fuel out, I'm not sure we could do those times," BAR chief David Richards said of Ferrari's performance. "But we don't know what form anyone else was running in today, so we need to wait until tomorrow."

Many teams were doing race preparation, but some may have been trying for quick laps and saving their race preparation for tomorrow.

It was another good session for Renault, with Jarno Trulli third fastest on 1m 25.757s and Fernando Alonso fifth on 1m 27.853s, both happy with the performance of the sleek R24. Between them was Jenson Button, who was showing that BAR's winter test form was no flash in the pan with 1m 25.786s. Unfortunately his BAR 006 then stopped out on the circuit, with an as-yet undiagnosed problem. Team mate Takuma Sato had some dramas with a big spin and later on another off-course moment, and was only 12th on 1m 26.967s, which was three places ahead of Anthony Davidson on 1m 27.516s.

Behind those three teams, BMW Williams and McLaren Mercedes ended up sixth and seventh (Schumacher and Montoya) and eighth and 10th (Coulthard and Raikkonen). The Williams duo's respective lap times of 1m 25.882s and 1m 26.206s were off the pace, and Montoya had a spin, but Williams habitually runs with decent fuel loads when doing such race preparation, so tomorrow will be a more valid comparison. At McLaren, Coulthard was happier with his MP4-19 than Raikkonen, lapping in 1m 26.215s to the Finn's 1m 26.579s.

Perhaps the surprise of the session was Mark Webber's ninth quickest time of 1m 26.312s. "We don't believe that we were sandbagging all winter," said delighted team boss Tony Purnell. "That's a good car, and we believe that more other teams were showboating." Christian Klien had a spin on his way to 17th fastest time of 1m 27.724s, leaving Bjorn Wirdheim 20th in the third R5 on 1m 28.781s.

Sauber Petronas drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa worked purely on race set-up for 11th (1m 26.601s) and 13th (1m 26.969s) respectively, the Brazilian recovering from the track time he lost in the morning session with a fuel pressure problem.

Toyota's best time was Ricardo Zonta's 1m 27.165s, the Brazilian having a point to prove as he survived a spin and lapped faster than team mates Cristiano da Matta (16th on 1m 27.710s) and Olivier Panis (1m 27.807s). Former CART champion da Matta had a spin and later came to a halt when his left rear Michelin was destroyed by a puncture.

Nick Heidfeld was Jordan's fastest man, in what Eddie Jordan described as a disappointing 19th place. The German lapped in 1m 27.826s. Team mate Giorgio Pantona didn't better 1m 30.061s and was later fined heavily for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by 2kph, while Timo Glock stopped after recording 1m 30.291s with a blown Ford engine.

Paul Stoddart's Minardis were 21st and 22nd, Gianmaria Bruni getting going with 1m 28.991s compared to Zsolt Baumgartner's 1m 29.708s.

It's Ferrari's day guys, unstoppable up in Melbourne once again in Sunday race. Both Ferrari were doing good start (making no mistakes) which it displays their cars looks complete in all aspects. Combined from speedy of F2002 and reliability of F2003-GA, I would say no wonder once again both Schumi and Rubinho got fastest laps of their own (in their race career) and certainly I gave my credit points to Renault's Fernando Alonso who can make his podium in the opening start of the season. Surprisingly B.A.R Honda were improving in race...(not only good in qualifying...) :)

I can count on Bridgestone in following races.. ;)

Here are the results :

at the start Renault did well, Alonso had the best one, from pos. 5 till 3rd place at start, Renault always starts sensational, this time Alonso, also B.A.R. hondas improvement to last season, B.A.R. made a big step to direction podium places, Jenson Button proved that it wasnt only luck, Sato was one pos. behind the points.... :devil2: Ferrari was dominating the first race of the season and Schumi is obvious on the way to his 7th championship title!!!! Ferrari will also win the next 2 races :devil2:
