Football Development Australia has teamed up with European football giant AC Milan to launch a football academy in Sydney next month.
The Milan Academy, which will be housed in a state of the art facility at Sydney's Olympic Park, will offer boys aged between eight and 11 the opportunity to hone their skills in one of the world's most advanced training programs.
Participants will train under AC Milan Youth Team coach Andrea Icardi, who will put them through their paces in a program based on that undertaken by the Italian club's young footballers, with emphasis on developing players technically, tactically, physically and psychologically.
The Academy will also have access to a Test and Performance program that has been designed specifically to monitor young players’ development in key areas of their game.
The performance data of each player is sent to a central database in Italy for assessment and comparison with the data of elite players in AC Milan Academies around the world.
This way, the performance reports provided are not based on the local coaches’ opinion but on the scientific data provided by AC Milan, founded on the First team, Youth Department Development and Milan Lab research.
AC Milan Coaching and Development staff in Italy will monitor and review progress of the players and teams at the Academy in Australia and will suggest and contribute to the Academy program in Australia based on their assessment of test and performance statistics they receive on a regular basis.
AC Milan PR Manager Daniele Massaro said: “We look forward to contributing to the development of Australian footballers through our Academy program and monitoring how the players respond to the Milan youth development concepts.”
FDA Director Cormac Begley also welcomed the news. "We are excited about bringing this expertise to Australia on a permanent basis and are confident that the AC Milan Academy will provide a valuable educational and development experience for local players and coaches alike," he said.
Talented players in the 8-11 age groups will have the opportunity to win a place at the Academy through selection trials held at the Athletic Centre, Sydney Olympic Park.
