Well, never understood why he wasn't called aside and had the rules of the game briefed to.

I had linked Kumble's pic holding the trophy and Sachin screaming at the side of him and clapping.

Thanks for sharing. It's one of the shots that will be looked back upon fondly in later years. When I saw it on Cricinfo yesterday, upon zooming the pic I could see the sheer delight on Sachin's face. This man has just become a kid who's got the toy he's so long been raising such a stink for. The man has no age. It's pure exhilaration. The article is a great read too. Thanks for sharing.

He's such a great guy. When a hate mob was kicking up a storm over "Mumbai for Marathas", Sachin said yes, he was proud to be a Mumbaikar, but first, he was an Indian. What a great man.

Ganguly brought balls and leadership into the team and sachin bought the swag and the trophies. and Dravid the stability.

Man im gonna miss that trio sooo much after sachin retires. Kinda like missing maldini when he retired as the last piece of the great wall or nesta when he will retire.

India appoint Duncan Fletcher as national cricket coach

Quote:
India have appointed Duncan Fletcher as coach for a two-year period.

The former England coach succeeds South African Gary Kirsten to become the fourth successive foreign coach of the World Cup-winning team.

Eric Simons, who was the bowling coach during Kirsten's tenure, will continue in his role and is likely to enjoy a good relationship with Fletcher through their Western Province links.

Fletcher's first major assignment with India, the number one Test side, will be when they tour England from mid-July for the summer's eagerly-awaited tour. It features Tests at Lord's, Trent Bridge, Edgbaston and The Oval, plus one Twenty20 international and five ODIs.

Leading up to that is an Indian tour of West Indies in June, featuring one Twenty20 international, five one-day internationals and three Tests. Fletcher may not be involved in that.

"He may not join the team in the West Indies as he has some prior commitments," N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, said.

Fire in Babylon: revenge of the West Indies
The new documentary Fire in Babylon recalls how the West Indies cricket team humbled the world

By Simon Briggs

Quote:
August 1976. England is in the grip of the longest and fiercest heatwave on record. The cricket field at the Kennington Oval is so parched that you might imagine yourself to be in Trinidad or Antigua, not London. The thousands of black faces around the boundary rope only add to the impression of a Caribbean outpost in SE11.

Michael Holding has the ball. Loose-limbed and doe-eyed, with a languid running style that has earned him the nickname 'Whispering Death’, he is the avenging angel of the West Indies’ fearsome cricket team. He stands in front of the sightscreen, almost pawing the ground at the end of his 44-pace run-up. The air buzzes with anticipation as he fixes his gaze on Tony Greig, the South African émigré who has played his way to the England captaincy. Everyone in the stands knows there is more at stake here than the next run or wicket. This is personal.

Holding begins his silky approach to the crease, his shirt billowing and his head swaying gently from side to side. 'When you watch him,’ the cricket photographer Clyde Cumberbatch said, 'what you are looking at is an African individual with African rhythm.’
That rhythm is matched by the pulse building in the crowd, as thousands of West Indian supporters beat their drums, blow their horns or simply bang a couple of tin cans together.

Holding leaps. The ball whips from his hand in a blur. Greig tries to jam his bat down in time but he is hopelessly late. The stumps detonate, and even though the match is not yet over, there are suddenly hundreds of people on the field. 'Did you see that one, Tony?’ they jeer. 'Who’s grovelling now?’

An excellent read or can say preview of sorts as to what to expect from this new documentary.

Fire in Babylon isn't just for cricket fans, it's an outstanding piece of work
New film 'Fire in Babylon' documents a time when the West Indies were rulers of the cricket world. Metro's Chris Stocks was given a sneak preview.

Quote:
This film is not just for cricket anoraks, it’s an outstanding piece of work in its own right and is about far more than the game. Even if you hate cricket, you’ll find it difficult not to like Fire In Babylon.

Fire in Babylon is in cinemas from May 20.
