Blatter is no honorable man. All football fans know that and I can't seem to understand how people work under him and for his ideas. But. There's a big BUT here. channel4 is putting words into Blatters mouth. Though we know he's probably thinking about Italy when he speaks that way. He didn't say it directly and there are people in the world who believe that WC final shouldn't be decided by a penalty shoot-out. But the reality is there's no better alternative too. And Blatter should realize that.

I am also of the opinion that deciding a match on penalties may not be the best way but it is necessary. Obviously players cannot play for overly long periods and also having a rematch does not give the beauty of football with teams having a good day/ bad day. But to call the Italian victory a tragedy is just sad and unfortunate and Mr. Blatter has never really proven to me that he is that great of a president of FIFA.

100% agree, the titles of channel4 are becoming more and more sensationalist day by day, which doesn't take away the fact that Blatter is an ass.

I rather penalties than stupid golden goal rule... picture the game Italy-Germany, with only Grosso's goal. We could have missed one of the greatest counter attacks ever(at least IMO). Besides penalties always have high drama, and you never know who will be the villain, I like them.

Oh man.... the IDIOTS are out in full force again...

Match replay is just an idea regarding future finals. BFD. It may be a rather stupid idea from an organisational point of view but he is entitled to his opinion. Golden + silver goals were rather stupid ideas too due to their shock effect but even they had their upside, as they kept the game going whereas with the shootout chances are the teams will gear down + rely on their goalie + penalty specialists. With the exception of the introduction of video replay I'm a traditionalist when it comes to the laws of the game, so penalties it should be, also in the future.

Exactly. Even though refs continue to wear their headsets, I've rarely seen a match without controversial decisions recently. Rather, stop play (although not frequently) which shouldn't effect the game's rhythm much since 'fair play' once a player's down occurs at least 3-4 times in a half. 3-4 correct decisions via video replay would be sufficient for starters. Maybe coaches could challenge decisions but I cant think of how that could be done.

In Romanian, 'blat' means match-fixing. Coincidence? I dont think so.

I don't think coaches should be allowed to challenge decisions, but video replays for sure.

But you can't wait until a player is down to check the replay - a player is injured 10 minutes after the incident, THEN they check the replay and award a goal, doesn't really make sense.

Maybe they could do it right after the incident, seeing as it will take only 15 seconds, but I am really not sure.

Blatter Says Sorry To Australia For Italy Defeat

It may be cold comfort for Australian fans but FIFA chief Sepp Blatter has apologised for the Socceroos’ controversial exit at the World Cup, saying that the team should have progressed to the last eight instead of Italy.

The Azzuri went on to win the competition but things could have been very different.

In the June 26 second round meeting between the two teams, Lucas Neill was controversially adjudged to have fouled Fabio Grosso in the penalty box in the last minute.

Francesco Totti fired home the resultant spot kick to send his team into the last eight and the Australians out of the competition.

In an interview with Australian broadcasters SBS, Blatter said sorry.

"I think there was too much cheating on the players' side," he said.

"I would like to apologise (to) our fans in Australia."

Blatter believed that Guus Hiddink’s team deserved a place in the next round.

"They were great," he said. "The Socceroos should have gone into the quarter-finals because they were up to beating Italy."

This guy is a joke. I wonder what he would do if an Italian club wins the champions league and the national team move on to qualify and win the next euro.

I won't comment anything on this guy as I do not believe this article.
I think the media must have hate this an so much, that they add words into his mouth.

I don't think France team won't agree a rematch too. Why punish Italy when they did nothing wrong, it is not them who set the rule and the system. And France team knows very well if they dont score in the extra time, they will need to go to penalty kick, so I don't see anything unfair.

Blatter forgot to mention Henry divin' to win a FK with led to France scorin' against Spain... or Malouda's dive against Italy to win the PK which Zidane converted...

he is playin' the apologetic angel with Australia now... after convincin' them he would allow Oceania a direct WC qualifyin' spot & couldn't keep his promise... Australia would be stupid not to spot this...

Sepp Blatter is a dirty (censored)!!!

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has further infuriated Italian fans by apologising to Australia for the Azzurri’s World Cup victory.

The second round match was goalless and heading for extra time following Marco Materazzi’s controversial straight red card when Fabio Grosso fell over a Lucas Neill challenge.

Francesco Totti stepped up to convert the stoppage-time penalty with the last kick of the game on June 26 and send Italy on towards their eventual Final triumph.

Australian supporters were angry at the decision by Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo and the FIFA President stepped out of his official role to make a bizarre announcement.

“I agree with them and I would like to apologise to our fans in Australia,” said Blatter. “The Socceroos should have gone into the quarter-finals in place of Italy, because they were up to beating Italy.”

The Azzurri went unbeaten throughout the entire tournament, notching up four wins and two draws in the 90 minutes – seeing off Germany 2-0 in extra time and beating France on penalties in the Final.

Blatter had already caused controversy with his comments after the July 9 Berlin match by stating it was “a tragedy” to see the World Cup assigned on a shoot-out.

This was the second time the trophy had been decided this way, as in 1994 Italy lost to Brazil in Pasadena.

The FIFA President also failed to hand over the World Cup to Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro. He was in the stands, but UEFA President Lennart Johansson took these duties instead. It has never been clarified why the change was made.

"I think the referees were not at their best," continued Blatter. "I think they were too well prepared or not looked after the right way. They were in a military camp situation. And I think there was too much cheating on the players' side.”

Yet Italy also felt aggrieved by the refereeing in the Australia match, as Medina Cantalejo showed Materazzi a straight red card for a late, but by no means violent, tackle on Palermo midfielder Mark Bresciano.

“I certainly don’t think it was worthy of a straight red, but I saw the referee’s eyes were determined, so decided not to argue and risk a longer ban,” said Matrix at the time.

“The important thing is that the world saw what happened.” So did FIFA, who only handed the Inter hard man, standing in for the injured Alessandro Nesta, the regulation one-match suspension.

WHat a wanker I hate this man. How is such a prejudicial person still allowed to be president of FIFA? This man is an embarassment to the game and should be Thrown in the gutter.

He's trying to suck up to us because he won't give us the opportunity to bid for the 2010 WC. He wants to be known for making the game big in South Africa, to leave his so called 'legacy'...

The blokes a deadset arrogant prick.

Blatter backtracks on Italy slur

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has backtracked on his latest comments by insisting that Italy deserved to win the World Cup this summer.

Blatter caused angry reactions in Italy after stating that he wanted to apologise to Australian fans, as he believed the Socceroos should have gone into the quarter-finals in place of Italy.

“The Italian national team showed us all that they are capable of playing excellent football and proved their superior technical qualities,” said the Swiss official on Monday.

“I only meant to give the Socceroos the credit they deserved, because they played a good match and the lack of experience was probably one of the reasons which didn’t allow them to go to the extra time.”

The director of SBS television, who aired the incriminated interview, confirmed that Blatter never stated that Italy had ‘stolen’ the World Cup.

He added that there was no discussion on the fact that the penalty awarded by Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo to the Azzurri for the challenge on Fabio Grosso was a mistake.

Federal Vice-Commissioner Gigi Riva had reacted furiously to Blatter, demanding respect for the World Cup winners, while former Azzurri Coach Marcello Lippi had preferred to not make any comments.

now what?
