Saturday May 24 2014 'England don't fear Italy'

England captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that his side do not fear Italy ahead of their World Cup opener.

The Three Lions play the Azzurri in their first match of the tournament in Manaus on June 14.

But the Liverpool midfielder has claimed that his men are doing everything that can to prepare in the right way for that clash.

Now it starts to get serious,” he told reporters at their Portuguese training camp today.

We’re here but we can’t wait to start this World Cup adventure. This, right now, is the most important part – the preparation.

It’s crucial that we get in shape for the first match against Italy, which is vitally important.

We have to concentrate on giving our all in the three friendlies before we get to Brazil, and fix the things that maybe aren’t perfect.

But there’s no better game to start with than Italy. They have to be considered one of the favourites because of their experience, but we don’t fear them.

Italy will be in London on Saturday May 31 to play the Republic of Ireland at Craven Cottage in their first warm-up game ahead of the World Cup.

omens point to Stevie G lifting the trophy

They did in 2010, and 6, and 2 :(

In the past we always had great defenders, so that always gave us a chance regardless of who we were against (inevitable we would drag out a game to penalties and lose) but those have gone so we're just going to go out with a whimper.

Everything depends of the game of Uruguay vs England. I see Italy and Uruguay passing through.

Italy thrives when the group is full of top teams, they're the only team who'll be fucked if they get an easy draw.

Switzerland is more fucked if they play lower teams because they usually play at lower team level.

Only one team will get out of this group and it'll be the 7 times champions of the Central American Football Union, Costa Rica. Yes 7 times champions. Yes. It is indeed an all champions group. I feel bad for the other 3 fighting for the 2nd spot, but c'est la vie.

Sabo noooooooooooooooo .

He's one of my favorites, I'll never understand people hating him in here, its simple, if you understand football, you love a player like him. We dont really lose him in the starting lineup but his style would've been useful as a sub player against all 3 teams and his very own way of leadership will hurt. In general though it just sucks to miss out on the WC at this final stage due to an unfortunate injury for any player.

@fnf r u italian? Anyways if a milan player not named abate doesnt play for italia, i hope they get crushed. Fuck every ladri, roma and inter scum on that team. I am not sure if inter has more than 1 player in the italian national team tbh.

Italian through my Dad's side... I wouldn't support this team otherwise. Still, Buffon, Pirlo and Verratti are my favourite non-Milan players in this side...

I mean vs germany. Is it safe to say that the 2006 italian team was the greatest italian side ever?

^"Goal! Goal di Grosso!!!!" - Brings a tear to my eye every single time I hear that.

Greatest ever, I dont know. I've watched Italy since 1994, and 2006 was definitely the most cohesive team. Every single player contributed (even the goals were split between almost everyone in the team)..

So greatest Italy side since 94, surely. Not the strongest Italy side on paper since 94. That was the Euro 2000/WC 2002 team, I'd say. With Totti, Nesta, Maldini, Pippo, Del Piero all at their peak.
