I won't be mad if we buy him for the reported 8m. I'd like to see him with the team from the very beginning because he has shown glimpses of being very good. He also gives physicality and has some good technique as well.

He did some dumb things in a few matches where he got reprimanded by Kessie.
If he comes in with a dry loan, it would be okay.

Including a dumb direct red card in one match,
And mostly useless if on court,
Meite was placed in front of Tonali for pecking orders in late matches,
Meite is cheaper and has less salary as well.

He had a lesser salary, maybe he will settle for the same or go full Hakan when negotiating a new contract.
About Tonali, I agree with you. The reason we are going after is I think because he is younger.

Except Meite is an average player that probably won't improve. Won't see any returns on him.

Meite is not a defensive midfielder.
I don't mind having him in the squad but I would sleep better at night knowing there is a backup to Kessie that fits the profile better
