I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong, Uefa banned them, but Fenerbache got a victory in CAS to let them play. Uefa then let them in while handing in a protest to the next level in CAS.

Something like that, UEFA banned them, they went and appealed to CAS, now CAS is taking time to decide so they get to play the playoffs.

Fenerbahce are awaiting a final ruling from the court of arbitration for sport (Cas) over whether they will be allowed to go into the competition proper this season, having been banned from competing in Europe by Uefa for match-fixing in domestic competition.

If Fener get kicked out tomorrow(for example), I assume that Arsenal will not get a bye, correct? That would be ridiculous.

However, even more ridiculous would be to make Arsenal play them, lose and then get put through.

If Fener get to the stage where they play Arsenal(so, August 20th or whatever) without being banned, then they should continue through regardless of decision.

Uefa opened the urgent case against Metalist 2 or 3 days ago, their situation is different and by next Tuesday UEFA will give verdict.

I dont know how they will proceeed though. I dont expect a walkover for Schalke.

It would make no sense letting Arsenal go through if they lose to Fener. That would be incredibly unfair to Salzburg. In that case Salzburg should play Arsenal for the CL group place.

if they get found guilty they will get thrown out even if they beat us. logic tells you they should make a decision before the tie and if they found guilty should be thrown out and arsenal should play someone else. But thats doing things in a simple and logical way .....goes against everything Uefa believes in

Metalist disqualified from UEFA competitions
Published: Wednesday 14 August 2013, 12.14CET
FC Metalist Kharkiv have been disqualified from UEFA competitions for the 2013/14 season following the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings against the Ukrainian club.

Match-fixing prevention
Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against FC Metalist Kharkiv under Articles 2.04g, 2.05 and 2.10 of the Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2013/14, regarding the admission criteria for participation in UEFA competitions, the UEFA Appeals Body today announced its decision related to the Ukrainian club.

• FC Metalist Kharkiv are disqualified from the 2013/14 UEFA competitions.

The club has the opportunity to appeal the decision of the UEFA Appeals Body to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In the meantime, the UEFA Emergency Panel – which is composed of five members of the UEFA Executive Committee – will hold a meeting later today to consider the consequences of the decision on the competition.

Anybody got an idea what happens now? If i remember correctly Metalist were to play against Schalke, does that mean Schalke will advance to the next round without playing a match?

Metalist Kharkiv banned from the 2013-14 CL for match fixing. Schalke (who've just dodged a bullet) now face PAOK in the playoff round

What about the appeal? Aren't they in exactly the same situation as Fenerbache now?

Metalist are out. Different siuation for Fener and Besiktas. They both got banned by UEFA, but appealed at the CAS (something Metalist can do if they want) and now are awaiting the decision.

CAS i believe wont announce the decision until end of August, so in brief it means that if by chance Arsenal do lose out to Fener, they still have a chance of making it through to the group stages should the Turkish get disqualified.

I think if a team gets banned, the next in line in their domestic league should take their place.

UEFA welcomes CAS decision on Metalist
Published: Friday 16 August 2013, 16.01CET
UEFA has welcomed the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to reject the application for provisional measures made by FC Metalist Kharkiv after the club were banned from Europe.

UEFA welcomes the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision rejecting the application for provisional measures made by FC Metalist Kharkiv against the UEFA Appeals Body decision of 13 August 2013.

In rejecting the request of Metalist, the CAS has upheld the decision of the UEFA Appeals Body. It follows that PAOK FC will participate in the UEFA Champions League play-off match against FC Schalke 04, the first leg of which will take place on 21 August 2013 in Germany.

The replacement of Metalist by PAOK was confirmed by the UEFA Emergency Panel earlier this week. The Ukrainian club had previously been found guilty of involvement in match-fixing, in a CAS ruling handed down on 2 August 2013.

Nice game from Maribor though. I think there still is a chance for you, even though it's very slim.

Yeah its really slim. They played alright, much better than against Apoel where they got through  ... kept possession but didnt have any real goal scoring chances, even the goal they scored was a real wonder goal. Plzen defended really well and was just awesome from set pieces and counter attacks.

I hope for the best... but Maribor did more then enough getting to Europa League again.

Watched a bit of the game, thought I was watching Donetsk for a while :D

The team is called Shakthar and they even wear Orange shirts, very confusing...

Juve benefit from Lyon's downfall. They will land in Pot 2 of the draw should Sociedad finish the job at home.

Pot 2
Atletico Madrid 99.605
Shakhtar Donetsk 94.951
AC Milan 93.829
Schalke 04 84.922
Olympique Marseille 78.80
CSKA Moscow 77.766
Paris St.Germain 71.80
Juventus 70.829

If 2 of the following (Zenit, Basel, Schalke or Arsenal) get eliminated (highly doubtful) then Napoli would jump from Pot 4 to Pot 3.
