He needs someone like Alex or Paletta for our DC pair to guide him. Even Thiago Silva at the beginning needed Nesta, in fact one of the jokes that he makes is that at the beginning Nesta wouldn't stop talking giving him directions all the time.

One thing is to have good skill, another is to fully get all the distances and what movements to make as a defensive pair. There are very rare the pairs where both players know what to do and how to do it and that comes after a lot of time spent playing together. In most pairs, you need to have someone to direct and someone to follow the instructions. Being a great soldier is a different skillset than being a great general.
