Carlo Cudicini believes the arrival of Petr Cech at Chelsea ended his hopes of making Italy’s 2006 World Cup squad.
Boss Marcello Lippi has tried numerous goalkeepers during his two-year reign, including non-Serie A custodian Flavio Roma who plays for Monaco.
Now Cudicini has confirmed the belief that his lack of first team football at Stamford Bridge over the past few seasons has affected his international prospects.
“I think I would have had a World Cup possibility if I had played more games for Chelsea,” he exclusively told Football Italia. “There would have been a good chance.”
Lippi is expected to take Juventus’ Gigi Buffon and Lazio’s Angelo Peruzzi, but he has yet to make his mind up on who will be the No 3.
Cudicini, whose father was a legendary Serie A ‘keeper, says he would opt for Marco Amelia of Livorno given that Christian Abbiati now rarely plays.
“Buffon is one of the best, but he’s just coming back from injury and Abbiati will be on the bench for Juve,” he added.
“I also think Amelia is doing very well. For me, the three goalkeepers at the World Cup will be Buffon, Peruzzi and Amelia.”
With or without him, the former Lazio and Milan custodian is confident that the Azzurri - along with a few other nations - will have a successful tournament.
“Italy – like Brazil, England, Argentina and Germany – will do well,” he concluded.
