The 2004 tournament was far better IMO and Greece was a better champion. Portugal would not have even made the knockout stages under the old rules and won one game in 90 minutes. They couldn't win in the easiest group, thoroughly outplayed by Croatia and got to face Wales in the semis.

Greece qualified for the knockout stages in a group with Spain, Portugal (the host) and Russia. Managed to beat France who were stacked and won the previous Euro and Czech who were one of the favorites and managed to beat the host Portugal again in the finals. That was Portugal's golden generation. None of their games went to penalties but they did beat the Czech with a silver goal. Not comparable to me.

No doubt that Greece team was an exceptional giant killer.

Personally I don't like Portugal but I can't hate on their win since their players actually played like they wanted to win and didn't fight among themselves like the French did.

I feel that way as well. I don't think they earned their route to the finals but they buckled down once Ronaldo went out and were positive, except for that POS Pepe.

Give me a giant killer any day though, that's a much better story. Portugal had the best player or second best player in the world, an easy bracket, easy group, new format, much much more assistance in their route to the finals than tiny Greece.

i didnt have any favourites going into this game. all i knew was that this was france's game to lose.

and they lost it.

lotsa people are talking about portugal's "anti-football" but i dont agree with that rly. not for this match at least.

felt a little sympathy for ronaldo. just a bit. but i'm glad portugal won. france choked hard, and even harder when you think that ronaldo didnt play.

if croatia weren't the spurs of NT football, they would have reached the final.

he's been a monster the whole tournament as a leader, he's been carrying this portugal side. he showed another part of his abilities other than the technical ones in this tournament imo.

---

also, fuck off everyone who's hating on portugal. they're worthy winners.

the best team always wins, that's it.

carrying? they just beat france at home without him.

he's the reason they finished 3rd in the group(20 shots in the first 2 games with 0 goals and missed the PK) was nowhere to be seen vs croatia, missed chance after chance vs poland but they managed to win the pks.

a lot of people give this portugal no credit when it comes to talent, their defense is very good, their midfield is solid to say the least, their only issue is that they don't have a proper 9 and the irony is that he won them the trophy.

I agree with that mentality for the most part, with the notable exception being 2002 South Korea where some of the games were in fact fixed. The best team won that tournament but we were deprived of some potentially great matches and Maldini got fucked over, as well as many other legends.

I love giant killers as well since seeing a weak team overcoming obstacles is always a great ride :proud:

And no doubt Greece is a more worthy champion than Portugal but props to Portugal for beating a better team in the final.

Seeing Ronaldo act as a coach was the highlight of the game for me :D:lol:

But I don't know if it's that France choked or that Portugal did a good job of shutting them down.

One thing I will say is that Portugal won this tournament Italy style. I don't think anyone would argue that.

It usually takes a bit of both (choking and a good game plan) to overcome a much stronger home team. Plenty of pressure on France at home, also the support that comes with it. Lack of a great CF up front hurt them but still better at practically every position than Portugal who were missing their best player. Portugal has been solid defensively other than the wide open Hungary match and as we know, a strong defense will always give you the opportunity to poach a goal and win a game against a superior opponent.

2005 we can blame complacent players who were also partying before the game was over while Maldini and Rino practically pulled out their hair trying to get them to focus. 7 minutes of hell and a Dudek fluke miracle save at point blank range from Sheva. We lost that game ourselves but that makes us the worse team that day because we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Carrying portugal.. are you for real?

I won't take anything away from this portugal win, even though they have clearly been lucky.. But that is football.
They won because of their impressive defence ever since the coach benched carvalho and vierinha. They played as a team and kudos for that. But don't tell me ronaldo was carrying this team!

I didn't take your praise for his leadership seriously at all, all he does is whine and complain on the pitch when they pass the ball to him too late or if they shoot instead of passing to him.

it's all roses when he scores, but he's nothing more than a whiner on the pitch, maybe he's a good leader in the locker room but I highly doubt it.

it's no wonder they won the final because every ball didn't have to go through him.

This alone

And the whining and complaining you're talking about is leading, the pressure he puts on himself he also put on his team mates.
