How can you support a country that isn't yours?

I've noticed that a majority of the forum users (passionatly) supported a team/country they weren't from. Some have even made numerous comments such as "we won". How can it be "we" if you live half way accross the world? I was just wondering how you feel about that, and why, because I could never do that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not taking a jibe at anyone, I'm just trying to understand it.

You see I'm german but I support Italy with all my heart.
Why? I try to make it short.

My uncle is italian and during the world cup 1994 I went with him to his family in Italy. This were the best days of my life. I started to love Italy, not only the national team, also the whole country. So I always say I'm german but my heart is italian.
It is hard to explain because this is a feeling directly from my heart.

Now 12 years later, I love the national team more than ever and my only wish is that they win the world cup.

Don't know if someone can understand that.

my dad is portugese, and my mom is italian, and i think i have a passport to both countries, even though my permanent residence is in Canada

But seriously, i loved (and still do) Maldini, so Milan happened, and that led to Italy.
I'd love nothing more than seeing India at the WC, but it'll take atleast another generation for than to happen.

You can't compare the football clubs to football national teams.

It's the World Cup, not the Champions league.

I always support first and foremost Mexico... but I support Italy, Holland, Spain and France, in that order, when they play (except against Mexico)...

Me too.I always feel desperated when I watch chinese football team playing.( i am chinese)
So just to escape from the reality ,I support italia.

bin a BIG fan of maldini and nesta (MILAN), and ive always loved the strong italian Deffence.. bin to italy several times with my dad on business trips ....besides wheneva i know that the team's lost i feel even tho i know ive got nothing to with Milan or Italia ,,kinda got attached to the team

Well I support Zambia whenever they play. Since they're not playing this WC (or any other before), I'll go for the team that has the most number of players I like. I've enjoyed watching Italy and then Germany over the years. Not a big Brazilian fan even though they are quite entertaining.

Oh, and scharatz, you might wanna adopt my tactic ... seeing that England is as good as not qualifying anyway

I can see where you're coming from in that people refer to different countries as 'we'. But i don't see the problem in supporting another nation at all. I've always liked Italy and am very exited about them reaching the final and possibly going onto win it despite being Manx. My dad refers to England as 'we' which sort of annoys me because he isn't English but thats just the way he is. What annoys me is something similar to this subject, is that people say you can't support a club team if you are not from the city or town of the club. I got called a 'glory seeker' from a scouser for supporting Liverpool which i have done my whole life, and he has only known me for 1 year, whats that all about??? How can he have the right to tell me who i can and cannot support?

i think the question really meant to ask the question, if you have no family from italy or no italian blood or have not lived there a long time, and your team is in the tournament, how can you support italy?

well, i suppose it still doesnt make sense to have people say we won, since even though you may not have your team in the WC and the like, it is still something different than us that are italian. im happy to let you support italy though, it makes me happy.

Costa Rica first, then Italy(France won me over in the last games, but Italy was first). And if both teams reach the same final, I'll go with Costa Rica, I wouldn't even think about it, I knew we were going to be crap this WC after the friendly against Ukraine, but I kept on with them, and I cried when we were eliminated.
Why Italy? 1994, I was 6, mom, sister, brother, all were supporting Italy, my dad supported Brazil. I decided to support Italy just because. Baggio was about to take the penalty, and I suddenly changed my mind. Baggio missed it, and I felt incredibly bad...4 years later, when I was 10, while watching Italy-Chile I realized why, I was an Italy fan(but I try to avoid the we won as much as I can), no logic behind it.
