i agree, he needs to learn how to properly defend first,i do beleive he will be very good once he learns how to defend properly as that is his main job.

Hence why his played in the line of defence

which isnt his natural position he is a right winger! point is, it would be better if he could learn how to deal with a ball like in the inter game, which is safety first, kick/head the ball out of play .

That's great, I like them both and they did really well this season. It's good to know that they will stay here, they're both still young and keeping them is a good move, I'm happy for them. I hope they will get enough playing time every season to show more great performances.

i hope to see abate succeed in the RB role..he has the pace and speed to be able to link up with pato on that right side, such as dinho' and antonini..he has plenty of time to learn, being as he is still young..plus, he did convert from a midfield role to a RB role, and something like that will take time to adjust..if i do say so myself, right before the ManU match, he seemed like he was starting to fit in more and more, i believe it was in the Udine. match..

zambrotta played as winger when he was bari player. after joining juve lippi converted him as rb so it's not impossible and definitely won't be the first time it happened.

Abate's got a lot of playing time now. This will be a good learning experience, if anything, but if we do aim to be among the best in the business, then he simply has to improve. I don't see him as being particularly effective further forward in midfield or as a right winger ... I think if he stands a chance at being a Milan regular, it will be at RB. He doesn't need to add a lot more to his game to be very effect from RB, but further forward, I don't think he's technically gifted enough ... and you simply can't teach that.

So ... about his RB play, BIG ISSUE that he has to work on is CROSSING. I know its a problem that almost every Milan fullback of late has had, but this mysterious problem has to stop. The only time we scored off a Abate cross was in a friendly against Juve. For an offensive fullback, with pace + the other offensive qualities that he has, thats a poor return.

Also, with our midfield playing so deep, it is upto the fullbacks to make some ground further forward. I know he may be a bit cautious about when to make runs and to venture forward, but he does so far too little, and he should have gained some confidence by now to at least venture forward once in a while. Its a main reason why Pato is singled out and struggles on the right ... because there's no overlapping run by Abate. Thats not to say Abate's only at fault, as if we were to lose possession with Abate pushed up, Pato simply will not cover and defend for him on a regular basis.

But that said ... with the system we play ... i.e. at least two CMs sitting so deep, we need to get more bodies forward to support the attack. This is where we need more dynamic wingbacks, who are solid defensively, and very capable moving forward. Its the biggest weakness of our squad at the moment, and so, if Abate and Co. don't seem up to the task, then Leo should go into the market for players who can without further delay.

think some of abate's timidness going forward is adjusting to defense. Learning his responsibilities. Remember antonini at beginning of last year? Then him this year flying more.

abate has a good right cross. He was 1 of most accurate crossers in serie A last year (statistically a fact). He connected as often than becks. A lot the issue now is just timidness cause he isn't comfortable at FB. I think he's growing quickly. Hope he can continue to grow....

I have a lot of hopes for Abate. If he keeps developing he can be a great RWB in time, he has improved a lot this season

I think his stoping power(shutting down defenders) is good but his defensive positioning still needs work.

I think he's done well defensively. Few errors here and there, but that was expected. Its offensively where he's been a bigger disappointment as he simply hasn't had any impact.

Playing with 2 DMs or holding mids, you need your fullbacks to push up, otherwise you will be easily contained.

agreed..over the past several matches, right before the ManU clash, he was showing signs of improvement in defense match after match...he does go up, but i would like him and pato to form a nice partnership together on that flank..

i think one of the reasons he started in this match against ManU was to try and keep up pace with the likes of Nani coming at him..he displayed some effort, but nothing much other then that..

I think he was awful last night. I haven't seen him hit a proper cross for ages. I was really pissed off at one point last night when he had the ball and he was doing the arm signal like"what am I gonna do with the ball now"?

I think starting at Milan has gotten to his head. It seems to me as though he has an attitude problem. Horrible game by him. We could have used his pace and energy ... but I don't know what the fuck he was doing all night long. He thinks he's a maestro playmaker or something :head:

On paper, Flamini + Abate is pretty quick stuff on the right. Flamini showed up, but Abate didn't.

perhaps month or so ago when i said zambro when fit is miles better than abate you disagreed with me like i'm idiot or something. abate is fast and that's it. no technique, can't cross, can't defend and leo think he's rb but actually he's unique rw without crossing ability :proud:

abate is one of my favourites at the mo, well... upcoming (hopefully) I know he can play bad (and I mean, real bad) the odd game, but when he's good, he's good! I agree about the crossing from an earlier post :S more along the ground kind of guy, but I do love him on the right wing, swapping back and fourth with beckham/pato at a push

Abate is more useful in faster team where people can help him on defence, but not in current squad.

This so-called player has only one quality: running fast straightforward. He cannot cross, he cannot shoot and he cannot dribble. What the hell is he doing here? I hope he'll leave the club and be replaced by somebody else.

He was poor at going forward today, but am I the one seeing that he was helping Zambrotta a lot, I mean Zambro got Kolarov and Zarate breathing down his neck, .. but yes his crossing was very2 poor and he needs to work on other things than just running down the line, should try to cut in, make smart runs in the box than make a simple pass rather than trying to cross

worthless - other than big heart and constant running (which is actually nice to see in this Milan side), he has no other ability to justify his place in starting 11, no matter in what position. Very bad decision making, non-existent football intelligence, below average technique, bad passing, abysmal crossing, not to mention shooting :head:
He started the season good, but his form over last few months has dropped in such a way that there is almost a consensus Janku should start before him now. And that says it all...

dont want to bash him constantly but i hope he improves atleast on one aspect, either you defend well or cross well, not asking abate to become a monster in a day but if only he could do one job perfectly.

he has the heart but either he lacks skill or he is not ready to listen/improve.

+1, he has to improve with his crosses, this season he already improved in defending and is good there imo, but his crosses are still not good.
Besides that, as you said, he has the heart, he fights and runs the whole match, but sadly that is not enough. But I have hope that he will further improve and get better in some points.

He's got energy and pace. He's also got decent defensive abilities. Yet, whats the point in having a fullback with all the pace in the world, yet can't hit a decent cross to save his life? Does anyone remember Odonkor?

I think Leva's suggestion was right. Use him in a role where he doesn't need to think too much + use his pace and energy. Lets mold him into the next Gattuso.
