If people were objective, they'd agree that
-a- Abate is not very good with headers
-b- Abate is not good when attacking and especially making accurate crosses
-c- Abate is solid at defending, leaving aside a couple of flukes with Milito he's done a good job most of the time.
-d- In the past two years, Abate has had a lot of problems with injury and has played about 2000 min per year, so roughly half the total minutes. In other words, if that's the same story next season, we'll need another right fullback.

Personally, when it comes to defending, I'd take Abate over Lichsteiner any day of the week. Glad he renewed assuming that his salary was less than 3 mill a year...

Glad Abate renewed, with a couple of decent players signing at CB he'll do very well again. When we had Silva and Nesta in our defence he was really good and even marked out Ronaldo and Eto'o. He is a capable defender and will show more consistency when the team as a whole does. We're all sorted at RB now, just hoping De Sciglio will we become the player we all know he can.

Abate is always injured
Yet somehow no one ever refers to him as injury prone

we need fullbacks... sure, a midfielder with vision and good passing is a priority (we have 0 of those) ... and a center back ... but i'm surprised no one mention the need in that department. ALL our fullbacks are robots, programed to run to the by line, with their heads low and attempt to cross (often in hit the legs of the defending player) . i can't remember the last time a fullback surprised the opposition by coming a little in and shoot. it probably happens 3 times a season.
antonelli did ok, in his 6 months but not a game raiser
dynamic fullbacks who can keep opposing fullbacks on their toes would raise the team threat level to a whole new number.
logically, the more weapons we have the more dangerous we will be.

Looks like if Abate is injured, the race for the RB will be between De Sciglio and Calabria (better Calabria then Zaccardo). It will be funny (and sad) if Calabria benches De Sciglio.

He's one of the main reasons why we lose possession quite fast and end up under pressure by competent opponents. We desperately need fullbacks with better ball control and short precise passes to escape pressure and hit back. He never developed that part of his game, not to mention his crossing. Without that, whatever qualities he has now, are simply not good enough to lift us to greater heights.

He kinda pissed me off during the derby, he was the one I screamed at the most.I generally like him but wow he really is a braindead footballer. Every-single-time he gets the freaking ball he looks to hit a long ball like he is Zidane, or pass to the first player he sees forward who is alreade surrounded by 20 players instead of keeping it simple. He rushes to much, he needs to calm down.

Abate, De Sciglio and Zapata will make any tactics with possession game very hard. If we add also De Jong, the difficulty increases further.

That said, I hope he doesn't get injured because now that Antonelli is out, we are very tight on fullbacks and I don't have a lot of trust on Calabria especially against experienced players.

He really is frustratingly injury prone. I like him alot when he plays, but he is on high wages and spends more time injured than playing. I have lost count as to the number of times he has been substituted in game. We should be thinking of offloading him now.
