Lyon star set for AC Milan move?
08:46 February, 10, 2006
Brazilian defender Cris is the latest name to be linked with a move to the San Siro

Milan are set to lose Jaap Stam, Cafu and Alessandro Costacurta in the summer and will look to completely reshape their defence.

Cris, known as 'the Policeman' in France where he has played a key role in Lyon's dominance of recent years is rated at £15m but has only 18 months left on his contract and may be cheaper in the summer.

GUYS i like him. I think that its the best solution for Central defender.
i have 3 choices for CD (CRIS,ALEX,LUGANO)...

We have been linked with quite a few defenders already..I am not absolutely sure which rumours are true. We have reportedly been linked with Chivu, Gonzalo, Bonera, Oddo, Lugano, Alex.....for quite some time now and none has come !!! I would welcome Chris though..He is one hell of a defender.

Serginho calls in Cris
channel4.com

Milan defender Serginho has urged his club to solve their defensive problems by signing Lyon stopper Cris.

The Italian giants are set to rejuvenate their ageing defence in the summer and the South American has been strongly linked.

Now Serginho has publicly given his backing to the proposed move by insisting his countryman is well suited to the Italian game.

“Cris has matured greatly over the last few years in Europe,” stated the left-back. “He is ready to play in such a competitive League as Serie A.”

The Italian giants are monitoring the player closely, a fact underlined when general director Ariedo Braida recently watched the man in action against Bordeaux.

Milan, who will lose Jaap Stam to Ajax in the summer, are said to be preparing a £12m bid – even if the player himself is remaining cool.

“Things change in football all of the time and I don’t know what will happen tomorrow,” said Cris.

“I am aware of the Milan rumours, but nobody has contacted me for the moment.

“For now, I’m very happy at Lyon and have adapted well here. I presently see no reason to move, but that may change in the future.”

Cris Aware Of Milan Rumours
goal.com

Lyon defender Cris says he has heard the rumours linking him with a move to Serie A giants Milan.

With Jaap Stam leaving for Ajax in the summer, the Rossoneri are in need of fresh faces at the back, and general director Ariedo Braida recently watched Cris in action against Bordeaux.

“Things change in football all of the time and I don’t know what will happen tomorrow,” he said.

“I am aware of the Milan rumours, but nobody has contacted me for the moment.

“For now, I’m very happy at Lyon and have adapted well here. I currently see no reason to move, but that may change in the future.”

Meanwhile, Milan defender Serginho has urged the club to move for his fellow-countryman.

“Cris has matured a lot over the last few years in Europe,” he said. “He is ready to play in such a competitive League as Serie A.”

I think if we should sign this players then they have to fit our style of play,we cant just sign any kind of defender which will end up like rogue junior and their likes,we need to sign defenders like nesta, someone who can overlap from d right flank like cafu etc.

As long as he can defend very good as a CD and can do it consistently, I don't think he needs to adapt to any style of play (the same cannot be said for midfields and offensive players, of course). Stam was a good example of this, managed to grind good performance in PSV, MU and Lazio/Milan. 3 different leagues with 3 different stypes of play. So I guess adaptation to Italian style of attack might be more applicable. Because if he's really good, he'll do good anywhere.

Other CDs like Roque Jr, Martin Laursen or Coloccini were left out because IMO they were not good enough to compete with Maldini/Nesta/Stam (well who are?). Their low quality of performance when given a rare chance to play also didn't help their cause.

And it might also be good to remember that Vikash Dhorasoo was the member of this all-conquering Lyon team when we signed him but simply failed to win a spot in the team which I believe wasn't his mistake but more of Ancelotti's

I don't know much about him, but if he is key Lion's player, that means some quality... If he is 23 years old, that sound interesting.. ;)

But I would prefer defenders who already play in Seria A, like Chivu or Bonera..

Well you have a point and I agree with you to certain extend that defenders have it easier in terms of adapting compared to other players. However, you also have to remember there are some players like Walter Samuel, etc that have failed to adapt to a different league setting. I think defenders still have to adapt to a different league setting. For example, Liverpool and Chelsea have a good defense in the EPL but they did let in a lot of goals in the Champions League last year. One of the main criteria’s needed for an EPL central defender is he needs to be good in the air. The EPL style of play requires you to be physical and most teams put in a lot of crossed and width and if your good in the air, ull be a good defender there. When Liverpool did come up againts teams like Milan, Chelsea, etc who resorted to playing a lot of trough balls and taking on players with skill like Kaka, Robben, Rooney did, you could sense the weakness in the team. Defenders probably find it easiest among the players to adapt but they still have a lot of work to do and adjust their style according to the league they are in.

Cris makes Milan plea Tuesday 28 March, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lyon defender Cris has told Milan that he would welcome a San Siro move on the eve of the Champions League clash between the two sides.

The Brazilian, whose full name is Cristiano Marques Gomes, has been linked with the Rossoneri for some time and he’s now admitted that he would have no objection to such a switch.

“I still have three years left on my Lyon contract, but I can’t hide my love for Milan,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

“I like that Rossoneri shirt, it fascinates me as does the fact that the club have won six European Cups, they are full of tradition and stars.

“I hope that something can develop from the simple interest which they currently have in me,” he continued.

Milan are looking to rejuvenate their ageing defence and the South American has been monitored by transfer guru Ariedo Braida in person.

Although the Ligue 1 outfit’s £9m valuation is rather steep, with Milan not wanting to spend more than £6m, the fact that he will soon have EU status is an advantage.

“My mum is Portuguese and I am in the process of completing all of the documents in order for me to get a European passport,” he added.

Cris, who now looks likely to feature for Brazil at the 2006 World Cup, will have a chance to further impress Milan officials this week.

He’ll be partly responsible in stopping Andriy Shevchenko and Co in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg tie.

I say if he wants to come he'd better not do his best in those two matches, we could then reward him with a transfer... hahaha :) /jk

I really dont like this guy.my reasons are-
1-We need a young defender under 25 not a defender who will be 30 next season
2-He is good in the air but not on the ground which i think Kaladze is so much better than him in this catagory
3-We just have to buy Chivu or Felipe for the defence that's all

Good news. Is he a CD, RB or LB? Anyway, i guess he'll be a good buy, despite being brazilian ;)

29 is not really that old an age to sign for Milan - for a defender, that is. Defenders usually peak in their late 20s and early 30s. If he can give us maybe 5 good seasons, i'll consider it as money well spent :)

But seriously, I thought Lyon had put a "Chelsea only" prize tag on his head, iow a ridiculous high one, now I see they ask 9 million and Milan wants to pay 6 million, but obviously viewing the comments, the player wants the transfer. Do you think 9 million is too much? Considering that Ajax asks the same ammount for Sneijder, we will not be able to buy both without selling some players ourselves. I think 9 million is too much for his age imho, not everyone is a Billy Costacurta who can play effectively at 40 years lol.

Then better get Sneijder and get another, younger, cheaper and better defender...someone like Chivu.
