Supposedly he has played two games in a row for the Primavera, so I would imagine he is getting quite close be being available to play

Hows he been though for the primavera? I believe I read he was really bad his first game with them.

It's time to slowly start introducing him into the squad again

Think it’s better to let him play primavera and train at the moment. He will be reintroduced after Christmas break

We are such bottom feeders.... I mean look at this deal?

18 month free loan to atalanta with option to buy for 15m!!!!!???
What a low tier team we are...

First, why not keep him since he's finally close to returning and was once suuuuper promising before his injuries. He's at least worth a try.

Second, at the very minimum we need depth and now we have to go and buy 2 defenders and not just 1 this January?? This is financially ******ed.

Additionally if we are dumb enough to sell him right now at least try and sell him outright for a solid price so at least we could reinvest the funds. But no, instead we give Atalanta a risk free trial to see if a guy, who was one of the best defenders in serie A a little while ago, is still able to get back to his best. If he can, then they buy him for a waaaaaaay undervalued steal deal of 15m. And if not, they just send him right back... in what way do we win here?

Awful deal. We have ******s at the helm.

The fact that he cost €35m, arrived one and a half year ago and yet this thread has 7 pages should tell you the most about his Milan career.

Looked like a good signing on paper and ultimately a long term partner for Romagnoli. Unfortunately for us (and him) things just didn't pan out as we all wished.

However, as a thanks for our generosity to Atalanta, can we receive something in return? Gasperini, mayhaps?

Never liked this signing. It was only tolerable because we got rid of Bonucci's 7.5m net salary and the club probably had not much of a choice since he rejected Manure's proposal.

He's a Gasperini CB, not an actual CB. It's not just the man-marking system. His CBs are more like box-to-box mids. His DMs are attacking midfielders. His wing-backs play like wing-forwards. Athleticism, hard work and skills are needed to succeed in this system, but comparisons should not be made with players outside the Gasperini world.

Mirabelli and bb!lanisti looked at Conti's goals/assists tally and thought they had found the new Maicon. Galliani looked at Bertolacci's goals/assist tally and thought he had found a new Hamsik. Leonardo and bb!lanisti looked at Caldara's goals tally and thought they had found a new Ramos.

He was awful in Juve's pre-season, which is why they accepted the swap without even hesitating. He comes to Milan and gets benched by Musacchio, who wasn't even highly rated by Rino who had perma-benched him immediately after replacing Montella. Outraged Milan fans couldn't understand "stupid Grintuso decision", but Caldara also didn't seem to understand football outside the Gasperini world when he was tested next to Romagnoli with the NT. Tested once in Europa League as well against Olympiakos where he looked equally lost, and then he had a not-terrible performance in the Coppa against Lazio. RnB saw this as proof that they were right about "stupid Grintuso decision", but we actually lost that game - at home - and Rino had fielded a Gasperini-esque 3-4-2-1. The Lazio goal came from a counter against no one but Conti, Kessie and Laxalt.

There were huge doubts surrounding him to begin with. Now, an Achilles tendon rupture and surgery and cruciate ligament rupture and surgery later it should be pretty fucking clear that he will be of no use for us in the coming years.
An 18-month loan back to Gasperini world is his only realistic chance of regaining at least a portion of his value. The loan terms are degrading. 15m buyout option, Atalanta only paying parts of his salary. But what are the alternatives? Paying the full salary of a useless player until his contract expires and he leaves for free? No club will propose to buy him out right. The likes of Inter might want to take him on loan, but the loan terms would not be much better, and it's not suitable loan destinations in Caldara's circumstances.

Blegh. It all started with the Bonucci signing.

We've spent north of 250m in the past few years with little success. Wouldn't it be simpler to hire a top-tier, or an up and coming coach with potential and pay him 7 or 8m a year? I mean how dumb can you be? Spend millions on players but scrimp on the one guy who's more responsible for the team's success more than anyone. Unfucking believable.

Why not just keep him as a backup rather than a free loan lol?? Worst deal ever.. Establishes Milan as Atalanta's cuckold... my how far we've fallen

Maybe because he does not want to stay as backup after being injured for 2 years.?

Spot on overall, except I don’t share the apparent derision for ‘Gasperini world’. That world is netting Percassi the big bucks, beyond his wildest dreams.

Also I was extremely hopeful when Caldara joined. Clearly a wrong call.

LOL, if there's a contempt for the Gasperini world then it's out of envy.
I wish Milan was part of that sphere.

Not good enough to start in a league game for Milan, but good enough to start for Atalanta in the Champion's League... yep, this is what Milan thought... and yep, we made this deal... usually Maldoban has done well, but this deal we gave to Atalanta = awful

We're not playing the same formation, and I haven't exactly heard positive things.

If we sold Borini to Barcelona he'd probably be starting upfront and if we sold Musacchio to City in the summer he would have started in defence, but that doesn't mean they're incredible.

Caldara's move to Atalanta was worked in parallel with Kjaer's move to Milan.

Wouldn't you say that:

1) Kjaer, in 1 month has already done more at Milan than Caldara at Milan (1.5yrs)?

2) Kjaer at Milan has done more than Caldara has done at Atalanta?

At the end of the day, I would rather have a player who can step on a pitch and to a limited degree, be functional, than a player who is stealing a living (€2.2m/yr) + injured 90% of the time he's been here.

Agreed. Very satisfied with this deal... the bad part was when we bought him, not now

He only got to start because Djimsiti injured himself during the warm-up.

He was terrible and replaced by Zapata, a striker, with 15 minutes left during a period in the game where Atalanta gifted away enough sitters to lose their lead.
