Milan Tracking The 'Next Maldini'
3/27/2005 8:43:00 PM
AC Milan are reportedly eyeing who many consider to be the great Paolo Maldini’s heir, Marco Motta.
The Serie A champs are thinking of already siging the young Atalanta prospect this July, but might end up waiting another year before snapping up his services.

The more they wait, the more the Rossoneri will probably have to fight off the challenge of other suitors, but they are pretty confident the player is already in their hands given the great relationship they have with the Atalanta management.

Motta greatly impressed in Friday night’s match that pitched off the Italian Under 21 team against their Scottish counterparts.

You would think news sources would be smarter than writing a headline like this after 20 years. 'The Next Maldini.' I believe I saw this same exact headline 10 years ago with Francesco Coco. Players like Paolo Maldini don't come around every 10 years, actually, players like him don't come around every 20 years for that matter. I am sure Motta has excited some people this season, but to call him the second coming of Paolo Maldini is a bit indecorous and farcical.

There is only one Paolo at Milan! It's official as no other member will ever wear the number 3 jersey ever again. The man is impossible to imitate.

There's no one can be as good as Maldini and so no one will be the next Maldini.

well said there's only one Maldini, well two including his father... and theres also the prospect of his children but you get what i mean :D

As with Motta he might be a great prospect but to compare him to Maldini this early the kid hasnt proven anything to compare him at Maldini's status is just foolish i hope Motta becomes a great player but he is no Maldini

I like the way DonippoRuiShevdini put it "Players like Paolo Maldini don't come around every 10 years, actually, players like him don't come around every 20 years for that matter."

But I think it's a bit naive and prejudiced to say that there will never be another Maldini [meaning another player with his skills and accomplishments]. How the hell do we know???

Anyway, as far as Motta is concerned, I must admit I don't know much about the young man.

well, of course he prob wont be the next maldini.
but, hopefully he will become close to maldini, i mean maldini wont be playing for milan 4 ever u know, even though he still has some miles left in those legs.

but yea, i'm really glad that milan has been linked to so much transfers for the past lil while, especially it's comforting when u know that they're trying to sign some young defenders that would replace the aging crew. (i'm bored by all the Gilardinho news, i mean it's great he's coming.) And wat better time to join Milan's defense for a youngster than now. He surely can learn some tricks from the legendary Maldini, Nesta, Stam, Cafu, and Costacurta.

Ok, I agree with all of you , he won't be as great as Maldini, but I'm also curious about how good he is. If there's somebody from Bergamo in the forum, please tell us about him.

Never could anyone come close to Maldini skill-wise.. blabla.. Wow, people are all visionaries here..

Quite a few players are currently playing on Maldini's level, if not better. He can be replaced + he will be replaced + I hope it'll happen before his 40th birthday.

Whether Motta will be the guy remains to be seen.

I liked before Cannavaro the young .. the one that plays in Parma .. but not sure on him anymore .. 1st time I hear this guy Motta.. I am sure he is delighted just to see his name near Maldini .. even though that would never happen.

Actually Christian is very good, I saw him at "Paolo Maldini Il Film" and he plays just like Paolo.

Maybe :) .... but i really don't think so, he makes the exactly same moves than Paolo. Nobody like Paolo but I think that in a few years Christian Maldini may give us a nice surprise.

No doubt about that. It will be very difficult to see someone like him again. Hope Milan will retire his jersey, he deserves it.

Its a bit naive to say there will never be another Maldini, I agree there will be very very few players that will ever reach the same level as him and for all we know we might never see anyone this good again, but you can't ignore the fact that we might.

After all, I'm sure that the Milan fans were saying the exact same thing when Baresi was playing, but Maldini was "The New Baresi" in a way and for all we know Motta might be Maldini's successor, or we might have to wait 30 years to see someone else this good. But as much as I love Maldini I think it'd be good for football if we did see someone this good again, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I guess for someone to be the next Maldini, that guy must break through the 1st team when he's still under 20, played at the same club for 20 years and has at least 50 international caps under his belt. Anybody in mind? Not in Milan, we only buy good players. I personally don't think there will be another Maldini.

The 'next-(name a great player)' thing is quite over-hyped. We never know how great a player will turn out in 2-3 years. Even Kaka is said to be the next Platini or Zico (this one I hope comes true). The only thing i agree is Nesta becoming the next Baresi.

But one thing for sure, I've never heard anybody called 'the next Maradona'.

Good post. Regarding your assessment of Maldini, I would have to agree. Today's transfer market simply will make it hard for a player to do this. Actually, the only way a player could do this is if he came up the youth ranks of one of the G14 clubs, otherwise, he will be purchased by one of the G14 clubs.

Nesta definitely is the second coming of Baresi for Milan, but their styles differ. A classic centre back/classic libero, but one thing is for sure, both are stalwarts along the backline for Milan and Italia. And Nesta, much like Franco did, opens up the attack from midfield on up because of their astuteness and the midfielders know one of the best is behind them. I still can't say it enough, that getting Nesta solidified this current Milan into the world's best side, which looking at results since Nesta has arrived, is a highly valid argument.

ja, Maradona still remains in a class of his own. I consider myself very lucky for seeing this man play live ona few occasions, and following essentially his whole career once he arrived in Spain. I hear younger fans compare Zizou to Maradona and that is simply ludicrous. Zizou did stand out as the best player of his generation, but Maradona was the only player I have seen take control of a game by himself, which is susually reserved for a sport like basketball that has so few players on the playing field. For an individual to govern a football match through his own brilliance for many years is simply unbelievable. The man did just that. Someone famous once said "What Zizou can do with a football, Maradona could do with orange" is spot on.

The media really should stop calling players "The Next" whoever because the minute that happens that player is doomed. Every great player became a legend on his own skills and not on some idiot journalists "Next" title. I personally I'm very skeptical of every player who bears the "next" tag 'cos they all seem to lack the talent, charisma and presence of the players they're being compared to. IMO this kid is already doomed 'cos he has to carry a very heavy burden of being compared to Maldini. The same goes for a guy like Freddie Adu who has been compared to Pelé.

There will never be another Maldini but there will be better defenders. And if we're very lucky, someday we'll maybe even get to see a better player than Pelé (hopefully in a red & black jersey). I for one don't buy into any of this crap the media throws at you 'cos 90% of the time the media's got their heads so far up their asses they don't know what they're asying.

And speaking of the 'next' Maradonna, Wasn't Carlito Tevez supposed to be that? The only similarity I see here is that both of them are short, ugly and have disasterous private lives!!!

The only man deserving to replace Maldini is Chivu, but he can't never be as much of a legend as Paolo. But I hope we'll get him, because he's such a world class player, especially considering the way he thinks. The guy's meant to be a winner, he should join Milan.:)
