4-3-3 gives you the extra man in midfield and also keeps the wing attack strong, maybe even a stronger wing attack than 4-2-3-1 as the 2 wingers can be attacking even more in 4-3-3. A 4-3-3 even supports more a winger / forward hybrid like CDK.

What's so difficult about that for Pioli to understand? It's like for him 4-3-3 is a forbidden formation!

With 4-2-3-1 Pioli often uses a CM to form a 3atb-rest-defense, so in that regard 1 more CB frees up that midfielder which I think is the reasoning behind it and the hope to build on existing patterns and maybe form a hybrid system in the future.

the issue i see with a 4-3-3- is leao. if you notice, all teams, everywhere defend with at least a 4-4. the 4-3-3 would require at times, leao to drop back into defence positioning, which he doesnt not do (maybe for the best). that is how you end up with a 4-2-3-1, which is more like a 4-2-2-2, with leao as the 2nd striker that mostly stays on the left.
