when we beat Venezia 4-0, i was very disappointed with that performance because it looked like nothing changed in our game play, we were lucky to win that game and our performance was quite bad actually... however last night was a different story... even though we lost the game, i was very pleased and proud of our boys. they did very well and last night was our best performance of the season, even better than Inter's, I agree with Fonseca on that
Leverkusen came from an undefeated season and beat Bayern to the Bundesliga, and over the weekend even mighty Bayern couldn't oust them... Alonso has done a fantastic job there and you can see it from how they play. They are an incredible team and even moreso at home. The first 30 minutes was a nightmare for us, they just poured forward and were so dangerous, they were too much for us... but as the game went on, we were getting more confident in our abilities and we started to take the game to them.
I really can't fault our players for much yesterday, I think (almost) everyone did very well... including Chukwueze (who started well but then lost his way a little)... I'm loving the leap in confidence that happened as the game went on and we are clearly seeing growth in this team. I am proud and hope that we carry on this path of growth. We could have gotten a point from this game and it would have been well deserved.... the referee was a bit unhelpful with some of his calls but I don't think he changed the game.
It was a good game.. our best one yet this season.. let's build on it... I'll be honest, I wanted Fonseca out of here ASAP before the Inter game but the team is started to finally play proper football again, even if it is for certain moments... for me, he's earnt some more time to implement his football.
this game at Leverkusen was always going to be a game where we'd be lucky to come home with a point. nothing changes. We put in a very good performance and we move on. I wouldn't be concerned about last night's result..
