The mercato has been underwhelming so far, I don't see how anyone can defend it.

We've upgraded our attacking midfield options but our defensive mid is weaker.

Our centre backs are considerably weaker, we don't even have enough players for the role imo.

The right wing problem had not been addressed at all.

The CF position has been upgraded with a new option but its not a guarantee that it will improve, hopefully it does.

We won the scudetto last season because we had the right team spirit and because our main competitors choked during key moments of the season. On paper there were 2 or 3 teams better than us but we had the advantage of having a stable coaching environment whereas they all made big changes and needed time to adapt to the new ideas.

I think that this season it will be harder for us to reclaim the title unless we properly address the key issues in the team which are CB, DM and RW. However, this doesn't mean that we cannot win again even with the way we are assembled at the moment because trophies are not only won on paper.

I don’t know, I think Adli, CDK and Origi (plus a healthy Rebic) is a MASSIVE upgrade to our attack. We had an incredible defense last season but our attack was crippled and Leao dependent. What we did this summer wasn’t a small upgrade, it was a massive one. We didn’t spend a lot, I expected (and still expect) us to spend more. But even without Ziyech we are going to find it much easier to score this season.

Like I said, the attack was upgraded (although somewhat disproportionately with many AMs and no real RW) but you can't ignore that the defence has weakened.

I'm from the school of thought that believes that you need to be strong defensively to win anything and this is the cause of my concern.

Regarding the attack and concerns about AM, RW and CM (Kessie replacement)

AM - Diaz has to bring it this year and find consistency but CDK and Adli can play that role too.

RW - this is a make or break season for Seale and Messias. Adli can also cover RW if required.

CM - If Milan get a player they like before the window closes great but I could see Adli if he bulks a bit being very effective in that role. He is quick and intelligent too quite a combination.

In summary you have a few players who are multifunctional and can be rotated as required. I see CDK and Adli having in principle free roles.

Seale could be quite decent cover for right wingback he does the high pressing well but falls short in his attack attributes. There are fleeting moments of technique but not often enough.

Ziyech would have been a great addition on the right but it wasn’t meant to be.

A tall CB cover would have been welcome too but again if the right profile is spotted anything is possible.

Just a thought about Ibra, I've obviously always rated him as a footballer, most people do, but the last years I've started to like him a lot more as a person and leader as well. Seeing him in the locker room encouraging the guys before the match , and wanting to be there for his team when he knows he probably won't be the focal point going forward, shows real greatness imo. He's shown he really cares and wants this club to be at the top again, and honestly I think the effect he's had on this team couldn't have been done by anyone else, not even Ronaldo or Messi.

Of course they matter. We're not playing FIFA here. Can you play Brahim as a DM? Player characteristics are very important. Kalulu was a RB who had the skills to play as a CB. Same can be said for Adli, but as I said previously I believe his full potential can be unlocked better if he was to play as AM. That's my opinion anyway.
