What people need to realise is that the times when Europe’s top clubs were hobby projects for local billionaires are over. The sums are too big for individuals to compete at the very top.
So what gives owners of big football clubs an incentive to become successful if not the bragging rights at one of Berlusconi’s bunga-bunga parties?
It’s either cultural, political and economical power or in RedBird’s and Milan’s case; the opportunity to sell the club for a higher price than what you bought it for.

People seem to have forgotten something: RedBird’s project doesn’t require silverware to succeed. It requires increased revenue and a healthy bottom line every year.

This is a very risk-averse and dull approach but even though it doesn’t take Milan to where we think the club belongs, it still takes us forward in some way because if the club regresses significantly on the sporting side RedBird won’t get their investment back once they sell.

Last year RedBird bought the club after competing with the Arabs of Investcorp. Back then there were different opinions on what fans could expect from Investcorp. Was it a slightly more grandiose Elliot/RedBird model or a sports washing model?
If the latter had been the case and they’d acquired the club we would’ve enjoyed a much more exciting transfer strategy than what we have under RedBird.
Looking at City and PSG it’s easy to think this is a fool proof road to success. What one has to keep in mind though is that sports washing projects are only lucrative to the owners as long as they feel they gain something in return. Should they lose interest there’s no way of knowing what they’ll do with the club.

Investment funds like RedBird have an obligation to their investors of making sure their investments return with a profit. The same is not the case for sports washing projects. No one is expecting any cash in return from a future sell. So if a sports washing project goes awry the owners may possibly leave the club to rot.

Malaga was bought by an Arabic sheikh 13 years ago because he wanted to invest in tourism in the region or something like that and he thought “I’ll show them I’m trustworthy by taking their football team to the pinnacle of European football and in return they’ll sell off much of their coast line to me”. It all started off well with a lot of expensive and flashy new signings and then came to an abrupt halt when Spanish bureaucracy or something else came in the way of the Sheikh’s large-scale tourism plans. Then all the talented players were sold, no further investments were made and the club was left to rot on it’s own, which it still is today, under the same owner who refuses to sell the club for less than we he deems an appropriate sum.
Could the same thing happen to Milan? It is conceivable.

RedBird may not be the owners we dream of but they come with a guarantee that they will run the club in a responsible fashion which may not be music to many’s ears but still is better than a lot of alternatives.

The most likely reason Maldini got sacked was because he wanted more money.
With a small budget, are you expecting us to sign a world class CM, CAM, RW, ST and back up LW and LB.

In some of those positions we are going to have to be creative and target cheaper guys..

I don’t think budget was the problem. 50m+ sales for a serie a club losing 50-60m a year, in the midst of a recession- that’s a lot of miney

Maldini went and pissed it away - that’s his fault.

I think objectively our team became a lot worse compared to 12 months despite spending 50m + sales and increasing squad cost. If anyone should take the blame for that, it’s the guy at the top

Moncada might have recommended CDK but it’s Maldini’s job ultimately to allocate his budget as effectively as possible to improve the team, including the choice of coach who will help maximize the assets he brings in
