We need to begin making moves with the start of the season two weeks away because right now I see us no better than sixth. Tomori and Fofana didn't play yesterday which leads me to believe that they will be the first to go, probably followed by Ricci, Terracciano and Estupinian.

Pulisic will stay based on positive past performances that were interrupted mostly because of injuries so the hope is that he's completely rehabilited and can produce. I would try to sell Nkunku that again yesterday played poorly, a real bad decision to bring him in at that cost and high salary. With our limited budget we can't afford mistakes of that magnitude.

For the rest, the idea of Musah, Chuck, and RLC staying does not appeal to me and hope that the media is wrong and that Amorim understand that Chuck as RWB cannot work, while we've been trying to unload Musah for a while but Atalanta where he hardly played was never going to redeem the loan.

So, fodders that we believed had gone forever are now seen as useful pieces for the upcoming season. We all hope that Amorim knows what he's doing but these players fail the eye test when I watch them play and I can't find much to be happy about.

On the flip side I'd like to see at least 4 new players that are good enough to improve our odds of top 4. Players that have been there done that, no more gambles that haven't paid off, particularly the expensive ones like Jashari that I've seen nothing special about. Watching him play nobody would guess that he cost us almost 40 million.

We created no scoring chances, couldn't keep their pace, couldn't advance the ball forward, and spent most of the time on our side of the pitch. Chelsea scored 3 goals and hit the post 3 times. They created multiple chances with ease, our midfield was non-existent and their wingers couldn't be contained.

Amorim was pretty tame in his statements, didn't seem concerned at all and kept repeating that he has a good squad, the players are great, the mercato is fine as he had only requested two purchases. Should have pointed out that we were dominated, completely out-played, which is more worrisome than the final score.

I’m actually glad we are embarrassed in preseason friendlies, at least we still have time to act. No point winning all preseason games and pretending fine as we are.

Well, that was ugly.

I'm not going to lose sleep over a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in pre-season, especially with an incomplete squad and Amorim clearly still experimenting. The result itself means very little. But "it's only pre-season" shouldn't become an excuse to ignore everything we saw either. 18-5 shots, 8-0 on target and Milan failing to produce a single shot on target is poor no matter how you twist it. There was barely any pressing, no combinations, no chemistry and very little attacking threat. At times it looked like one of the uglier Allegri performances from last season. It was a painful watch.

The more positive way to read it is that Amorim still seems perfectly willing to sacrifice these games in order to assess what he actually has at his disposal. He's clearly not at the stage yet where he's picked his starting XI and is building chemistry and automatisms around it. He's throwing different players and combinations together, sometimes changing them two or three times during the same game – and it painfully shows. Just look at that second half. We had Torriani, Vladimirov, Gabbia and Diawara in defence for large parts of it. That's three Futuro players plus Gabbia, and realistically none of them will be starters. We had Jashari playing first with Musah and then with Ricci, while Musah was moved up to RAM. How exactly is any of that supposed to produce chemistry? Most of those combinations will hopefully never exist again outside a friendly.

Amorim basically confirmed as much afterwards when he said that there were things he tried against Chelsea that he wouldn't do like this in a competitive game against such an opponent. And frankly, that's exactly what pre-season is for. I'd rather he stress-tests these players now, exposes their limitations and finds out who can actually execute his ideas than play cautiously just to get a pretty result in August. And that's also why none of this particularly surprises me. I've said since the moment we decided to move on from Allegri and make this 180-degree turn towards a much more proactive style that this process would take time and probably be painful to watch at first. You don't erase months of Allegri habits, positioning and muscle memory within a few weeks. Some important players only returned recently and we're simultaneously asking them to learn an entirely different way of playing football.

These are growing pains. I expected them and I'm still expecting a difficult start to the season. Where I absolutely agree with the concerns tho is squad construction. Amorim can assess as much as he wants and eventually coach this team as well as he wants, but there are obvious holes that coaching alone won't fix. The defence is the biggest one for me. This system asks a lot from its CBs and I don't think we currently have enough defenders suited to it. Gila would make a huge difference, but one CB doesn't suddenly make me comfortable with our options across a three-man defence, especially once injuries and suspensions inevitably enter the picture. And Ramos obviously remains just as important at the other end.

So no panic from me and certainly no conclusions about Amorim after a pre-season defeat. But no "it's just a friendly, nothing to see here" either. The result doesn't matter. Some of the problems we saw absolutely do. But at some point the experimenting also has to stop too. The season is approaching quickly and Amorim needs time to settle on something resembling his actual team and start building chemistry instead of constantly shuffling the deck.

Hopefully he's learned what he needed to learn by now and gives his final transfer wishes to whoever is currently in charge of granting them. Because Gila and Ramos would solve two major problems. I'm increasingly convinced, tho, that they shouldn't be the end of our mercato.

Yeah, one LWB to replace Estupinan. Bartesaghi is, currently, just decent. Great rotational player, not a starter.

Our right side is kinda ok for now that we are broke. Salaemakers and Musah. Athekame must go on loan. He won't get any minutes. Chukwueze must be sold. 15 millions are enough, I guess.

Odogu, Comotto and Kostic must also go on loan. Keep Camarda but sign an additional striker. Cisse must also stay.

What worries me about Chuk at RWB is not the hustle, it’s the defensive awareness. Scanning, checking his shoulder, ”bodypositoning”, interrupting runs, etc. I have a hard time seeing a 25+ year old with no previous experience of that learning it fast enough to warrant starting games. He could be a sub when chasing a lead, but that’s it.

Put he pushes up himself, even outside the box. Torriani hardly used the box in contrast, while Mike goes sometimes even up on the middle line.

It is much easier for a CB to push up if you have a sweeper keeper covering you.

I mean, Rabiot has the timing for those late runs into the box, the key passes and even the shooting. He'd bring some much-needed physicality there too (Leao, yesterday looked lost physically, Nkunku barely got balls and Musah is Musah). I actually kinda like the idea of Rabiot at RAM.

The problem is that it would leave a bit of a hole in CM because right now I think Jashari is his only real back-up there. So you'd basically solve one problem by creating another.

With France at the Euros, Rabiot was mostly used in the double-pivot and did well there, but I also remember thinking at times that they weren't really making full use of what he can offer going forward, no? He has always looked most dangerous to me when he's allowed to make those late runs and attack the box rather than being tied down too deep.
