It's a question for all EUROPEANS (not just UE citienzs): do you like the idea of this new Europe, more united and with an unique currency? Do you feel optimist that in the future we can become even stronger than USA?

simple: NO
i'm happy britain never accepted euro, to be honest. why would we change our currency (pounds) to euro if pound is 62% stronger than euro!? :conf:
as for "united states of europe", or however they named that idea, it will simply never happen. you will never see countries of eastern europe (present EU members and those who applied, of course) being virtually the same country as UK, france or germany for example. never. it's as simple as that. economy is 15 times weaker, living conditions as well. so if you merge poor and rich, you will get a balanced country (or union) somewhere in the middle of total wealth. that would be great for poor countries but what imbecil from western europe would accept that his country suddenly goes way lower on the wealth scale? answer: none
and that's reality.

anway, i don't know if we should discuss politics at all.
just keep it calm ;)

I would like to think one day that Europe would become like the United States, in terms of economy, yes, but more importantly, like intercultural interaction. I know this exists to a good degree now, but in the United States it is more so (at least from what I saw when I was there). Now, where I live, we do not have such a choice......french, Corso, spaniards, Italians, Moroccans, ect......we are all joined here and we all get along. Uniting cultures and languages will probably never happen, but uniting the currency is a big step in the direction that may not be right, but it is what I want. Also, I think Great Britain is adopting the Euro here soon....aren't they? Scharatz is right though to with his observation of western and eastern europe. That is a main obstacle.

I'm not too optimistic and I have yet to make up my mind whether I agree with it or not, but YES, it is possible. But it will take LOADS of time, and that's decades. Romania should enter the EU in 2007 and adopt Euro in 2012 according to the plans. Some studies are saying that in 2020 Romania will be at half the level of Germany... so go figure it out youself how much will it take. I guess at least until 2050 for a country as Romania to have an economy as good as Germany, and in 48 years ANYTHING could happen that can change things dramatically. I might be talking crap, I don't know, but it will certainly take a while...

Scharatz, UK should accept EURO in 3-4 years max. So are plans. :devil2:

Well, i wouldn't like a mix of cultures but an economical unity would be cool.

I think that about economy we'll become stronger than USA but we've to find general agreement mainly about DIPLOMACY.
We've an history, surely hugely greater than USA and history is EXPERIENCE. Look at how USA is in diplomacy, they think to be the best and they never want to listen others' will.
Europe is passed in CENTURIES of WAR, if we have a common idea and plan we could slowly become the pole of worldwide policy and become real ALLIED (i would prefer "friends") of eastern and africans countries.
We can understand better than others the problems.

I'm not a dreamer, i simply like to see FACTS and they say that together we are the most evoluted people in the world as mind. This is not an insult to other countries, but as a man of 70 is more experienced than a guy of 20 an older country is more experienced than others younger.

Look at last century, 60 years ago we made war btw us... now we have the SAME CURRENCY. I know that eastern countries have serious problem but i think that everything can become more fast soon, it just depends by EU will. Eastern Europe is an HUGE possible market, once we've planned to INVEST on it the comin-back money quantity will be amazing and those countries will develop themselves too, increasing our competivity.

I repeat, i know is not easy but with a BRAVE new social-class all this is possible... think to 1500 and 1600... our ancestors left to conquer new worlds facing huge risks... we are the new generations, we can follow them on the road of progress and new glory, we've just to want it, accepting all sacrifices and problems...WE CAN DO IT IF WE WANT.

From a purely economic point, the Euro is the best way to compete against the US. This eliminates a myriad of currency fluctuations, a million different interest rates and gives Europe a currency that can go head to head with the Dollar. Of course it's only the beginning and when the kinks are worked out and the EU comes to accept a uniform tax rate and fiscal policy, the currency will only help the EU go up against the US and Asia.

Unless the UK adopts the Euro, they will eventually have serious problems in having to compete against two giants the dollar and the Euro. The same thing with Switzerland and their problems are becoming more evident each day. Someday whether they like it or not, even Switzerland will have to join the EU simply because they can't afford not to.

According to most economists, eventually there will be maybe around 5-7 currencies throughout the world. One for the Americas (dollar) one or two for Europe (Euro) two for Asia and another for Africa. This convergence will happen since it eliminates a lot of problems in global trade such as exchange rates, interest rates and speculation in currencies. The days when George Soros held the bank of england or most countries in Asia to ransom with his huge currency speculations will be eliminated or at least be greatly reduced by having less currencies to speculate on.

Whether one likes it or not, economic power is what primarily enables the US to be the sole superpower. If Europe wants to be on par with the US in terms of having a very powerful voice, then the Euro is a step in the right direction since this will consolidate the whole continent eventually into one entity or economic superpower. Those who refuse to join will be marginalized and will see themselves becoming very insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Of course this will not happen over night but say in ten to twenty years, thats what will happen.

Well I just got home and have been wanting to jump into this conversation so here goes. Everyone in this topic know I have a tendencey to be longwinded so I'll try to be brief. Converting to the EU had to be done. It helps all of Europe and Swan is correct that the Uk will convert in a couple of years. No date set but they did it right. Since the pound was the strongest and England has so many US dealings if they converted at the same time as everyone else the US would have had to much of a currency differance and England would have gotten screwed. Smart investors here were chomping at the bit and a ton of people were buying options on foreign currency in hopes that would have happened. And if it would have, they would've done very well if they all converted at once. Since England didn't the Euro has a couple of years to grow and establish its self and with the way things are going here it will soon overtake the dollar and the UK shouldn't have a problem converting. Then that leaves Asia the convert to one currency to keep pace. Africa I don't know about. I hate to say it but it could be fu**ed. With the internal problems of the governments and AIDS killing percentages of the population I can only pray that something great happens and we can figure out how to help the most precious and beautiful place on Earth. Then there's South America... Who knows? They have more economic poblems then I have free drinks at my compainies Christmas party. If they could get their agricultural situation together then they might be alright. That just leave Oceania to combine and then it would just be a couple of currencies. Then what happens??? Well as far as i can guess we will go on like that for awhile and either 1. blow ourselves up argueing over some stupid thing like we usually do, 2. slowly continue to join until we are one, or aliens will atack us and we will quickly be forced to become one, triumph and will live out a peaceful exsistance until the Sun expands and swallows the Earth. Was that depressing enuff for you all? :) Does that even make sence  Like I said I had a bunch of free drinks at the Christmas party  Anyway we are slowly working towards peace so let's all have a toast to the one thing everything can agree upon, "beer is good and so are all of you."

ps. i think i might be developing a drinking problem.
