Watching the team today I was actually very happy with how good our first XI performed(except for the two goals), and we had almost a full team of potential starters on the bench.
All working towards Piolismo. We will be a revolving door of good players this season, I think we will just break down teams over the course of a game.
We were always in control and never panicky or rushed. But we were still VERY fast, both in moving the ball and in our counterpress. We saw a glimpse of our mobile CF with Rebic, but it should be even better with Origi.
Was very impressed with Theo’s defending today. Bennacer was excellent as usual. Kalulu’s moment was sublime but him and Tomori just allow us to play in such a uniquely aggressive way. Deulofeu and Success were dropping back almost to their own third and Kalulu and Tomori just stuck on them. We were rarely outnumbered in midfield, which was always the risk against a 352. We’re shaky at set pieces. It’s expected. Should be better once all our tall expected starters start playing regularly (Origi, CDK, Adli). Udinese are also one of the more threatening set piece teams, but they’re also by far the most direct team out there. We managed to easily shut that down, and in terms of worrying about teams catching us on the break there’s no more threatening team in Serie A than Udinese. We passed that test.
I said it before and I’ll repeat it. Last season we solved our defense and we figured out how we want to play, not just the overall big picture stuff but even the small details started to get really refined and innovative. We defend like one of the best teams in Europe, and the numbers reflect that. It’s also a style that allows us to attack in a unique way by giving us positional overloads everywhere. We never really were able to take advantage of that last season, moves always broke down with our less technical midfielders or with Giroud or Brahim. We got Origi, CDK and Adli now to solve this glaring problem. What we saw today was a big indication that we might have solved the problems in attack. We’re no longer expected to be so left depended, which teams can plan for. We’re scary all over the pitch.
