That's the thing - two ways to look at it.

If Maldini is of the mind that this is the best he could've done to raise the level now given a poor budget then he could be defiant saying I told you it wouldn't work.

Then there is your thinking that he will only make bigger mistakes with more money.

I can see why Gerry would let him go but the real indicator will come from the window and if those player can make immediate impact.

Cardinale might be looking at Milan like an LBO. You increase cash flow a lot to pay down debt till the point you exit at 4 or 5 times the equity to went in with. But that can’t happen in a football club and if he is trying to experiment with us this would be the greatest of disasters.

No football club makes enough money to massively pay down hundreds of millions of dollars debt and then still invest in the transfer market substantially. None anywhere not even well run clubs like Bayern or Madrid

Why should they stay? It's quite obvious that the owner does not intend to invest with the goal of creating a winning cycle. More young talented players will come, who all need playing time with capped wages, cementing the club as a stepping stone club. Many of these players could have got better pay elsewhere "Theo e.g" but stuck around partly out of loyalty to Maldini, the guy many elite players till this day still feel starstrucked by. With him gone, I'm sure a big part of that loyalty is gone too.
