Their frustration (MM) with Pioli was on display everytime the camera showed them during games…but I believe he’d (Maldini) have kept him no matter what. But he’d (Pioli) be walking on eggshells.

He’d still be walking eggshells this season regardless.
Nobody will be as patient as Maldini was with him. Anybody would have fired him no later than Feb. + this season he won’t have the “he just won scudetto” cushion.

Anyone who sees any situation in black and white is ... limited. Let's take CDK. It was a reasonable gamble that did not pay off (at least not this year). Most likely, he was scouted by Moncada, so (no matter what) he shares in the blame (as Maldini shares part of the credit for Moncada's wins). Maldini owns responsibility for the following reasons:
- why did we play the "bidding game" with Leads and allow the price to soar? With Gazidis, we probably would have moved on once the price exceeded a certain amount. Sure we lost prospects this way, but the down-side was reduced. At the end, we wasted a lot of time and paid more than we wanted. Which leads to ...
- why waste so much time and pay well over half of our budget on one player (yes, RedShit could have given MMM more money, but most of us learn to operate within our budget).
- was there adequate communication with Pioli? Does not sound like it.
- was there a battle behind the scenes with Furlani? Who knows. But in the American corporate world, you pick a battle with another exec you better show results (or expect to pay for it). When you play the game of thrones...

That was a radicalized Pioli who tried to do anything to stop leaking goals after the 2-5 loss to Sassuolo. Regardless, he adapted an improved version of the 3ATB system by knocking out Conte and Harry Kane, barely conceding an xG of 1 over two legs.

Because we stopped using it after the 3-1 loss to Udinese and our first game back with the 4231 was.... 0-4 away at Napoli. Then, for a month, we didn't concede many chances over 8-9 games and it looked like the 4231 formation was working again up until the Derby.

I guess I grew up around the Italian model where the coach has some say, but is still expected to make the players brought in work, so I am not as sympathetic to Pioli's plight, especially as I think there are several talents among those he chose not to play.

Reports coming out over conflict between Maldini and Pioli over the usage of new players confirms my suspicions, although I feel like much of the press that is emerging is mudslinging from both ownership and MM, which I find distasteful, and mixed within that truth is hyperbole and falsehoods, which isn't helpful, either--especially as the press in Italy (as ForzaMilan2 have pointed out) are overwhelmingly pro-Inter and pro-Juve.

At this point, if we maintain our squad and our stars, I'll give Moncada his chance--I have no choice and love Milan too much not to--but if we start selling our best players... I can't get behind that strategy.

So when your best player, Leao, is injured, and then you lose another of your best players (Bennacer) within minutes of the first leg starting.... you use a more attack orientated system than one that is more cautious and has shown itself to be effective at countering the 352, which has consistently been a problem all season?

Pioli utilized a great solution against Juve in the first game we played, and then in the second one... he didn't use it.

These are the sorts of decisions that make me question the value of putting so much faith in Pioli.
