My biggest relief right now is that I won't have to sit through another season of Allegri jihad ball. I can't even begin to tell you how much weight that takes off my shoulders.
But that doesn't mean everything is suddenly fine now. Furlani being gone gives me genuine hope. Zlatan still being here gives me a headache. Some of the rumours doing the rounds sound encouraging, others far less so. There are way too many open questions to start making predictions about next season, but you've nailed the core issue: if this summer isn't entirely built around squad needs rather than market opportunities, we're in the exact same limbo as before, just with a fresh set of faces to blame come next June.
Here's my copium. If Zlatan survived Gerry's purge, it probably means he wasn't the one pushing the opportunities-over-needs philosophy. That was Furlani's fingerprint. Now, giving a manchild like Zlatan this much influence at a club still doesn't sit well with me. But in one thing he's always been consistent: he's competitive, he's demanding, and he doesn't stomach half-measures. At least that was true when he was a player. As a manager, senior consultant or whatever he actually is right now, I'm genuinely not sure how much of last season's disaster lands at his feet and how much doesn't.
What we do know is that the whole thing became a power struggle. Zlatan spent months pushing the narrative that "he's the boss". Furlani pushed back, made clear every decision ran through him as CEO, and then came that infamous trip to New York and whatever was said in that room between him and Cardinale made Zlatan disappear from the spotlights ever since. That backstabbing, everyone-for-themselves climate is what rotted this club from the inside for the better part of the last couple of years. If this reset actually kills that dynamic, I can allow myself a cautious sliver of hope that whoever is steering this thing now has a vision centered on real ambition and not just financial survival. Whether they have the competence to execute it is, of course, an entirely different and very uncomfortable question.
