Yeah, I think that's the important context here. This stat basically measures how good a player is once he has the ball at his feet – resisting pressure, carrying the ball and beating opponents – while also taking the difficulty of those actions into account. And in that very specific area, Saelemaekers apparently is genuinely elite. Statistically even the best in all top 5 leagues lol.

The problem, as you said, is what happens afterwards. He can beat his man, escape pressure and carry the ball into dangerous areas, but his final pass and finishing aren't anywhere near the same level.

Then again, if Saelemaekers combined that 93.6 on-ball ability with elite key passes, assists and goals, he probably wouldn't be playing for Milan. He'd be at City, PSG or another club paying €100m for him.

So I think the stat actually describes Saelemaekers quite well: exceptional at getting somewhere with the ball, considerably less exceptional at deciding what happens once he gets there.

I thought last season, when he wasn't acting the fool, he was pretty good except for the horrible finishing.
Once he lost his head in matches he just deteriorated and was of no use to the squad. If a coach could just discipline him he would be fine as a system player as Wild described.

I also think, healthy competition would also naturally keep him in line so a viable alternative has to emerge.

FFP, horrible management in Milan and Italy - and then one thing few think about, smaller talent pool of quality players. The only ones who are quality get picked up by the ones you mentioned plus PSG.

I love money as much as the next guy and more power to anyone who makes a lot of money, but when you have 20 year old multi millionaires who are set for life after their first or second contract, the quality will fall.

The fall of Italian football compounded the issues but outside of the boot Milan IS Italian football.

i was talking more about football in general and i'm looking for reasons to why this sport has turned into shit, was it FFP or was it already going there and FFP slowed it down or speed it up?
