I can't live in a world where Inter gets SMS on a reasonable fee like 30-35M and we don't. Not if SMS fits our team like a glove on top of that.

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd still like to share my three cents.

I don't think it's a secret that I always defended Pioli against a lot of what I thought was misplaced criticism, and - at least until 2022 - I still stand by what I said then. In 2023, on the other hand, it has become impossible even for me to defend Pioli against most of the criticism. Yes, we're in the thick of Top 4, but only thanks to a very abnormal season where Inter lost 12 games while still comfortably making it into CL and we could qualify for said CL with only 67 points - when's it been the last time in history of Serie A? So for me, Top 4 for once doesn't make a season a successful one. Not without context.

For example, I don't believe that the glaring difference in performance between this and last season can be explained away by the "not so rounded squad". After all, we are talking about exactly the same squad - minus Kessie - that won Serie A twelve months ago and collected more points in one season than any AC Milan team in history before.

Sure I don't argue that with a better squad you get better results. I mean to stretch the argument, yeah, if we had Haaland, Mbappe and De Bruyne, yeah, we sure would have won more games. That's a fairly easy argument to agree on. But most of the points we lacked compared to last year we lost to teams in the bottom half of the table, some even to teams in the lowest places in the table. That is not and cannot be a squad quality problem. Not for a squad that became champions a year ago and still has its entire core intact!

You've already said that you don't absolve Pioli of all mistakes, I more than agree with you on that. But I don't agree that Pioli is less to blame for the underperformance than Maldini and Massara. Pioli has, in my opinion, failed extremely in integrating the new players into his rotations. In my opinion, they are not as bad as their lack of minutes would make you believe. Pioli had months to prepare them for the important final phase of the season, balancing the Serie A and Champignons League. He failed in that. Only Thiaw seems to work out for now, all the other players (still!) look like foreign bodies.

And even with the established players, I don't see the identity of last season anymore, the playfulness and the ideas are missing. A lot of things seem stuck. And don't even get me started on the annual injury crises (the most annoying issue with Pioli).

If Pioli were to stay, I hope he can learn from all his mistakes and draw the right lessons from them.

Major difference between this season and last is going far in Europe. And you simply can’t downplay the World Cup mid season. It’s never happened like that before, and it’s not even about the players that did or didn’t go to the World Cup. It’s about the fact that we played every three days for almost half the season.

I do not think it’s a coincidence that going into January we were only five points off Napoli, before farigue(and yes tactical issues) really kicked in. I mean look at it this way, whenever Pioli rotated the team we dropped points. And the flip side of that is that when he doesn’t rotate the team as much he’d like, the starters play more than they should and the performances dip. Our identity missing last season? Well yeah…our identity is a pressing side that’s good in transition. How can the players do that when they’re dead? How can they press aggressively, track runners(major defensive problem this season) and then bomb forward to join the attack with numbers? It’s impossible.

I just really really think our squad is getting not talked about enough as maybe the main reason this season has gone to shit. It’s not the ONLY reason, but it’s a huge one. And since you said our team wasn’t that deep last season…again we didn’t play on multiple fronts for the second half of last season. Which is coincidentally when we grabbed first and didn’t look back.

I firmly believe that say, if we got knocked out in the group or maybe lost to Spurs, we’d be about three or four games better off in the table. I would bet serious money on that actually. I do hope this season is a wake up call on multiple fronts. I hope management sees the potential of the team, scudetto last season and last 4 of CL this season, and what they can do with a deeper team. And I hope at the same time Pioli realizes what it really takes to manage a top team with these expectations, and how to keep the energy up/what to do when fatigue kicks in. I do really believe a few signings can ramp things right back up.

Lots of fair observations there are several reasons for this season going off the rails.
On one hand a good season regarding the CL run but too many dropped points in Serie A.

Squad depth, misuse of players and tactical choices all contributed to the season going a little south for Milan.

MMM need to move on the players who have simply not worked. Some players need a real chance and to be reevaluated. Milan do need much better squad depth where the secondary players actually maintain the form of the team when starters are rested.

And Pioli needs to use all the players available to him but by playing them to their strengths. I think Pioli is a good coach but can be better if he can have greater flexibility regarding the players roles and his tactical choices against different opponents. Sometimes he nails it and other times his choices are baffling or just stubborn.

This season I think/hope has been a key learning experience for several people at Milan across the board. The summer market will demonstrate if they have realised the errors of this season and what measures they will take to amend them.

First and foremost Milan have to secure (comfortably) Champions League football.
